The objective of this research is to evaluate an impact of asphalt mixture beams with varying sizes of aggregate in the Bending Beam Rheometer （BBR） for testing/predicting thermal cracking properties of asphalt pavements. The BBR test has following benefits： the equipment is cheaper, it uses smaller specimens, faster conditioning, easier availability for quality control, easier to manage, etc. However some concerns have been raised： some consider that the size of the aggregate may affect the test＇s results; the other concern is that such small beams cannot represent the whole properties of the asphalt pavement. To address these criticisms, imaging techniques, statistical analysis, and viscoelastic modeling are used. Asphalt thin beams prepared with three different nominal maximum aggregate size （NMAS）（12.5mm, 9.5 mm, and 4.75 mm） were tested at three different temperatures （-18℃, -24℃, and -30℃）. Based on results from statistical analyses and viscoelasticity, the ratio of asphalt binders and voids and stiffness differences among the three NMAS specimens are not significant, meaning that the impact of asphalt thin beams prepared with the three NMAS on the prediction of thermal cracking is minimal and can be neglected.

BACKGROUND Myocarditis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in children, leading to long-term sequelae including chronic congestive heart failure, dilated cardiomyopathy, heart transplantation, and death. The initial diagnosis of myocarditis is usually based on clinical presentation, but this widely ranges from the severe sudden onset of a cardiogenic shock to asymptomatic patients. Early recognition is essential in order to monitor and start supportive treatment prior to the development of severe adverse events. Of note, many cases of fulminant myocarditis are usually misdiagnosed as otherwise minor conditions during the weeks before the unexpected *** To provide diagnostic clues to make an early recognition of pediatric *** investigate early predictors for poor *** We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional single-center study from January 2008 to November 2017 at the Pediatric Department of our institution, including children < 18-years-old diagnosed with myocarditis. Poor outcome was defined as the occurrence of any of the following facts: death, heart transplant, persistent left ventricular systolic dysfunction or dilation at hospital discharge(early poor outcome), or after 1 year of follow-up(late poor outcome). We analyzed different clinical features and diagnostic test findings in order to provide diagnostic clues for myocarditis in children. Multivariable stepwise logistic regression analysis was performed using all variables that had been selected by univariate analysis to determine independent factors that predicted a poor early or late outcome in our study *** A total of 42 patients [69% male; median age of 8(1.5-12) years] met study inclusion criteria. BACKGROUND Sutures have been used to repair wounds since ancient ***,the basic suture technique has not significantly *** Phase I of our project,we proposed a“double diabolo”suture design,using a theoretical physical study to show that this suture receives 50%less tension than conventional sutures,and so a correspondingly greater force must be applied to break *** To determine whether these theoretical levels of resistance were met by the new type of *** An observational study was performed to compare three types of sutures,using a device that exerted force on the suture until the breaking point was *** tension produced by this traction was *** following variables were considered:Tearing stress on entry/exit points,edge separation stress,and suture break *** study sample consisted of 30 sutures with simple interrupted stitches(Group 1),30 with continuous stitches(Group 2),and 30 with the“double diabolo”design(Group 3).RESULTS The mean degree of force required to reach the breaking point for each of these variables(tearing,separation,and final breaking)was highest in Group 3(14.56,18.28,and 21.39 kg),followed by Group 1(7.36,10.38,and 12.81 kg)and Group 2(5.77,7.7,and 8.71 kg).These differences were statistically significant(P<0.001)in all *** The experimental results show that with the“double diabolo”suture,compared with conventional sutures,greater force must be applied to reach the breaking point(almost twice as much as in the simple interrupted suture and more than double that required for the continuous suture).If these results are confirmed in Phase III(the clinical phase)of our study,we believe the double diabolo technique should be adopted as the standard approach,especially when the suture must withstand significant tension(e.g.,laparotomy closure,thoracotomy closure,diaphragm suture,or hernial orifice closure).

This study is a contribution to the behavior of the corrosion process of steel by carbon dioxide (CO2) and the formation the FeCO3 (siderite) by using both weight loss and electrochemical techniques when the material is exposed to a CO2 saturated 3% NaCl solution at 50 °C. The study included the analysis of an imidazoline based inhibitor which was relevant in the process of mitigating the carbonate layer formation. The test was elapsed during 336 h in an electrochemical cell where several EIS studies were performed along the test to characterize the iron carbonate layer formation as well as the role of the corrosion inhibitor. Post test SEM and X Ray Diffraction studies on coupon materials revealed the iron carbonate layer characteristics, as well as the role of the inhibitor in the control of the layer formation.
