Triterpenes from Cabralea canjerana as in Vitro Inhibitors to Light Reactions of Photosynthesis

Aims: Cabraleadiol (1), Ocotilone (2) and Odoratone (3) are three triterpenes isolated from Cabralea canjerana (Vell.) Mart. (Meliaceae). They were chemically characterized, and their effect was tested on the light reaction of photosynthesis. Study Design: Natural products were used as models to find new models for inhibitors of photosynthesis. Place and Duration of Study: Departmento de Química, Universidade federal de São Carlos and Departmento de Bioquímica, facultad de Química, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de México, between May 2013 and January 2014. Methodology: The natural products had their effect on the light reaction of photosynthesis studied by pollarography and Chlorophyll a (Chl a) fluorescence transients. Results: The compounds inhibited ATP synthesis and electron transport rate (basal, phosphorylating and uncoupled). Therefore, they act as Hill reactions inhibitors. Their inhibition site were located in the range of electron flow from OEC complex and between P680 to QA of PS II, and inhibited the photosystem II (PS II) by inducing the appearance of a K-band which is an indicative that the photochemical apparatus is failing at the donor side of PS II interacting at the OEC complex and by transforming active reaction centers to “heat sinks” or the formation of silent reaction centers unable to reduce QA. Conclusion: furthermore, these triterpenes inhibit PS II and induce the appearance of small g band which is related with the decreased plastoquinone (PQ) pool reduction.

Small-scale self-driving cars:A systematic literature review

The autonomous vehicle(AV)technology has the potential to significantly improve safety and efficiency of the transportation and logistics ***-scale AV testing is limited by time,space,and cost,while simulation-based testing often lacks the necessary accuracy of AV and environmental *** recent years,several initiatives have emerged to test autonomous software and hardware on scaled *** systematic literature review provides an overview of the literature surrounding small-scale self-driving cars,summarizing the current autonomous platforms deployed and focusing on the software and hardware developments in this *** studies published in English-language journals or conference papers that present small-scale testing of self-driving cars were *** of Science,Scopus,Springer Link,Wiley,ACM Digital Library,and TRID databases were used for the literature *** systematic literature search found 38 eligible *** gaps in the reviewed papers were identified to provide guidance for future *** key takeaway emerging from this manuscript are:(i)there is a need to improve the models and neural network architectures used in autonomous driving systems,as most papers present only preliminary results;(ii)increasing datasets and sharing databases can help in developing more reliable control policies and reducing bias and variance in the training process;(iii)small-scaled vehicles to ensure safety is a major benefit,and incorporating data about unsafe driving behaviors and infrastructure problems can improve the accuracy of predictive models.

Assembly structures of coastal woody species of eastern South America:Patterns and drivers

Tropical regions have provided new insights into how ecological communities are *** dry coastal communities,water stress has been hypothesized to determine plant assembly structure by favoring preadapted lineages from neighboring ecosystems,consistent with functional ***,it is unclear whether this hypothesis is sufficient to explain how coastal communities in tropical ecosystems are ***,we test whether water stress or other factors drive community assembly in woody plant communities across the coastal zone of Brazil,a tropical *** characterized functional and phylogenetic structures of these communities and determined the underlying environmental factors(e.g.,water stress,historical climate stability,edaphic constraints,and habitat heterogeneity)that drive their community *** of coastal woody species show geographically varied patterns,including stochastic arrangements,clustering,and overdispersion of species relative to their traits and phylogenetic *** complexity,water vapor pressure,and soil nutrient availability best explained the gradient in the functional *** deficit,water vapor pressure,and soil organic carbon were the best predictors of variation in phylogenetic *** results support the water-stress conservatism hypothesis on functional and phylogenetic structure,as well as the effect of habitat heterogeneity on functional structure and edaphic constraints on functional and phylogenetic *** effects are associated with increased phenotypic and phylogenetic divergence of woody plant assemblages,which is likely mediated by abiotic filtering and niche opportunities,suggesting a complex pattern of ecological assembly.

Motivations for and barriers to innovation in non-profit organizations: The case of nursing homes in Northern Portugal

To contribute to the empirical literature on innovation in non-profit organizations,this study examines innovation in Private Social Solidarity Institutions with social responses for the elderly in Northern *** enriches the literature by clarifying the concept of innovation applied to non-profit organizations,which represents a perspective different from the business ***,it is important to support the innovation decisionmaking process in similar non-profit *** this study,the population was surveyed through questionnaires based on the PUBLIN research project,which has already been applied in different countries,and the targets were employees of organizations with social responses for the *** sample is small,with 28 respondent institutions and 51 employees,but it is representative,as it includes institutions from all districts in Northern *** study employed a quantitative approach,particularly factor analysis,multiple linear regression,and correlation analyses,using scales already applied in other dimensions of the social sector,to understand the effect of each innovation dimension/determinant on creativity and innovation in nonprofit *** results show that in these organizations with social responses for the elderly,learning orientation,risk-taking,and job satisfaction have a positive impact on innovation.

With the increase in antimicrobial resistance,it has become necessary to explore alternative approaches for combating and preventing ***-cinnamaldehyde(CNM)and Benzyl4-amino(B4AM)are bioactive compounds derived from chalcones but with restricted solubility in aqueous *** can enhance the solubility of compounds and can be a promising alternative in the development of novel antimicrobials,with reduced side effects and prolonged *** objective of this study was to evaluate the stability of oil-in-water nanoemulsions loaded with two distinct types of chalcones at two different dosages,to propose a stable formulation with antimicrobial *** showed that nanoemulsions presented high encapsulation efficiency,low polydispersity index(PDI)and particle size below 200 nm,indicating that emulsification was a suitable method for nanoemulsion *** with higher dosages exhibited significant antimicrobial effects when compared to free chalcones and positive ***,B4AM nanoemulsions at higher dosages showed expressive activity against Salmonella minnesota,with a 420%greater inhibitory response compared to the free form and showing equivalence to the positive *** nanoemulsions showed excellent inhibitory activity at the highest dosage,equivalent to the positive control against *** and Staphylococcus *** greater number of conjugated bonds in CNM increased the antimicrobial activity in comparison with B4AM,and the formation of nanometric domains enhanced the bioavailability,being a promising alternative for antimicrobial applications.

A Rapid Parameter of Enzyme-Treated Cellulosic Material Revealed by Reducing Sugar Release

This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of enzymes in purifying and reducing the degree of polymerization of cellulose for the production of dissolving *** goal was to determine the contributions of xylanase(X)and endoglucanase(Eg)in the treatment of pulp,specifically by quantifying the formation of soluble and insoluble reducing sugars using the dinitrosalycilic acid(DNS)***,the release of soluble reducing sugars(RSSol)was enhanced after xylanase treatment,while endoglucanase(Eg)treatment led to changes in insoluble reducing sugars(RSIns).The maximum synergism was observed for RSIns when a high ratio of endoglucanase to xylanase(320Eg:5X/g pulp)was *** relative contribution of endoglucanase to RSins was determined to be 15.6%of the total reducing *** viscosity of pulps treated with xylanase decreased only by 7%,whereas endoglucanase treatment significantly reduced viscosity by 45%.Modifications in the particle size were observed after pulp treatment with the combination of endoglucanase and *** summary,the DNS test is a rapid and effective method for evaluating the efficiency of enzyme treatments on *** measurement of RSIns correlates with changes in pulp viscosity to different extents,providing valuable insights into the effectiveness of enzyme treatments.

1 INTRODUCTION,This is the third Editorial/Commentary that one of us(***)has written relating to boron neutron capture therapy(BNCT)[1,2].for those readers who are unfamiliar with BNCT we would refer them to several recent comprehensive reviews[3–5].The second Editorial ended on a hopeful note that with the introduction of acceleratorbased neutron sources(ABNSs),BNCT would enter into the mainstream of radiation therapy[2].

TypeⅡdiabetes mellitus(T2DM)has experienced a dramatic increase globally across countries of various income levels over the past three *** persistent prevalence of T2DM is attributed to a complex interplay of genetic and environmental *** numerous pharmaceutical therapies have been developed,there remains an urgent need for innovative treatment approaches that offer effectiveness without significant adverse *** this context,the exploration of the gut microbiome presents a promising *** has increasingly shown that the gut microbiome of individuals with T2DM exhibits distinct differences compared to healthy individuals,suggesting its potential role in the disease’s pathogenesis and *** emerging field offers diverse applications,particularly in modifying the gut environment through the administration of prebiotics,probiotics,and fecal microbiome *** interventions aim to restore a healthy microbiome balance,which could potentially alleviate or even reverse the metabolic dysfunctions associated with *** current results from clinical trials have not yet shown dramatic effects on diabetes management,the groundwork has been laid for deeper *** and future clinical trials are critical to advancing our understanding of the microbiome’s impact on *** further elucidating the mechanisms through which microbiome alterations influence insulin resistance and glucose metabolism,researchers can develop more targeted *** potential to harness the gut microbiome in developing new therapeutic strategies offers a compelling prospect to transform the treatment landscape of T2DM,potentially reducing the disease’s burden significantly with approaches that are less reliant on traditional pharmaceuticals and more focused on holistic,systemic health improvements.

A C-shaped hinge for displacement magnification in MEMS rotational structures

The design,analysis,fabrication,and characterization of two distinct MEMS rotational structures are provided;these structures include a classical symmetrical lancet structure and a novel symmetrical C-shaped structure provided with a tilted arm,and both are actuated by thermal *** proposed C-shaped structure implemented a curved beam mechanism to enhance the movement delivered by the thermal *** geometrical parameters of our proposed device were optimized using the design of experiment(DOE)***,the analytical modeling based on Castigliano’s second theorem and the simulations based on the finite element method(fEM)were used to predict the behavior of the symmetrical C-shaped structure;the results were in good agreement with each *** MEMS-based rotational structures were fabricated on silicon-on-insulator(SOI)wafers using bulk micromachining technology and deep reactive ion etching(DRIE)*** fabricated devices underwent experimental characterization;our results showed that our proposed MEMS rotational structure exhibited a 28%improvement in the delivered displacement compared to the symmetrical lancet ***,the experimental results showed good agreement with those obtained from numerical *** proposed structures have potential applications in a variety of MEMS devices,including accelerometers,gyroscopes,and resonators,due to their ability to maximize displacement and thus enhance sensitivity.
