Background: The present study has evaluated the effects of different inclusion levels of a partially defatted black soldier fly(Hermetia illucens L.; HI) larva meal on the growth performance, blood parameters and gut morphology of broiler chickens. A total of 256 male broiler chickens(Ross 308) were reared from d 1 to d 35 and assigned to4 dietary treatments(8 replicates/treatment and 8 birds/replicate). HI larva meal was included at increasing levels(0, 5%, 10% and 15%; HI0, HI5, HI10 and HI15, respectively) in isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets formulated for 3 feeding phases: starter(1–10 d), growing(10–24 d) and finisher(24–35 d). Two birds per pen were slaughtered at d 35 and morphometric investigations and histopathological alterations were ***: The live weight(LW) showed linear and quadratic responses to increasing HI larva meal(maximum for HI10 group). Average daily gain(ADG) showed a linear and quadratic responses to HI meal(maximum for HI10 group) during starter and growing periods. A linear decrease was observed for ADG during the finisher period. The daily feed intake(DFI) showed a linear and quadratic effect during the starter period(maximum for HI10 group).Linear and quadratic responses were observed for the feed conversion ratio(FCR) in the growing period and for the whole period of the experiment. The FCR showed a linear response in the finisher period(maximum for HI15).No significant effects were observed for the blood and serum parameters, except for the phosphorus concentration,which showed linear and quadratic responses as well as glutathione peroxidase(GPx) activity, the latter of which showed a linear response. AIM： To investigate the effects of mangiferin on gas- trointestinal transit （GIT） in normal and constipated mice, together with the possible ***： Intragastrically-administered charcoal mealwas used to measure GIT in overnight starved Swiss mice. In the first experiments, mangiferin （3 mg/kg, 10 mg/kg, 30 mg/kg, and 100 mg/kg, po） or tegaserod （1 mg/kg, ip） were administered 30 min before the char- coal meal to study their effects on normal transit. In the second series, mangiferin （30 mg/kg） was tested on delayed GIT induced by several different pharma- cological agonists （morphine, clonidine, capsaicin） or antagonists （ondansetron, verapamil, and atropine） whereas in the third series, mangiferin （30 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg） or tegaserod （1 mg/kg） were tested on 6 h fecal pellets outputted by freely fed mice. The ratio of wet to dry weight was calculated and used as a marker of fecal water content. RESULTS： Mangiferin administered orally significantly （P 〈 0.05） accelerated GIT at 30 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg （89% and 93%, respectively）, similarly to 5-hydroxytrypta- mine4 （5-H%） agonist tegaserod （81%） when compared to vehicle-treated control （63%）. Co-administered man- giferin （30 mg/kg） totally reversed the inhibitory effect of opioid agonist morphine, 5-HT3-receptor antagonist ondansetron and transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 receptor agonist capsaicin on GIT, but only to a partial extent with the GIT-delay induced by ~2-adrenoceptor agonist clonidine, and calcium antagonist verapamil. However, co-administered atropine completely blocked the stimulant effect of mangiferin on GIT, suggesting the involvement of muscarinic acetylcholine receptor activation. Although mangiferin significantly enhanced the 6 h fecal output at higher doses （245.5±10.43 mg vs 161.9±10.82 mg and 227.1±20.11 mg vs 161.9±10.82 mg of vehicle-treated control, at 30 and 100 mg/ kg, P 〈 0.05, respectively）, the effect of tegaserod was more potent （297.4±7.42 mg vs 161.9±1

The scientific concept of probiotics has been widely accepted throughout the last decades; consequently, its industrial production and commercialization have been increased. This is only the beginning since a recent global probiotic market analysis estimated an annual growth, boosted mainly by a rising request from the Asian and European consumer in the next 5 years. So the pharmaceutical industry needs to develop new dosage forms containing probiotic microorganisms in order to offer consumers a variety of products. Different kinds of matrix tablets with Lactobacillus coryniformis CECT 5711 were designed to protect this strain from the technological process and harsh gastrointestinal conditions up until their arrival in the gut, as well as environmental conditions during their storage. With this aim, various retarding polymers were combined so as to get controlled release tablets. All formulations were evaluated in terms of technological processability, bacterial viability and stability. Finally, an optimal formulation with Methocel K-15 M EP, Eudragit L-100 and alginate sodium, which contain Lactobacillus coryniformis CECT 5711, was selected due to the fact that it assured an excellent survival of the microorganisms after their exposition to all conditions mentioned above, besides it will be able to improve human＇s health.

This paper presents the results of the investigations, driven by different techniques, including environmental tracers and geophysical methods, in the aim of better understand the causes of the current salt-water intrusion in the Pontina Plain, in the south of the Lazio Region (Italy). In the last 50 years many investigation campaigns have been carried out to evaluate the evolution of salt-water intrusion. This is an area with a strong man-made residential and tourist impact and, in the some cases, it is characterized by intensive agricultural practices. Therefore, it can be affected not only by salt-water intrusion, but by the salinization of its groundwater also due to other factors. All these factors have led the Pontina Plain to a groundwater situation which makes the groundwater resource management and the planning of their future exploitation very difficult.

Open Mass Cultures of Marine Microalgae for Biodiesel Production: Laboratory Approach to Study Species Competition in Mixed Cultures

Since the interspecific competition represents a critical issue for biodiesel production in open mass cultures of microalgae, laboratory studies aimed to select competitive species receive significant interest. In this work, a laboratory approach based on the method of multisizing cell counting was developed to monitor the competition course of single algal species grown in mixed cultures. Two marine microalgae, Dunaliella tertiolecta and Phaeodactylum tricornutum, were used to set-up an induced-contamination assay, with the aim to test their competitive capabilities. The evaluation of the oil production by dried biomass extraction was coupled to the growth assay to investigate the effect of competition on oil yield. The adopted experimental approach revealed effective as a method to selectively measure the algal growth of single species in mixed cultures, enabling to evaluate the competitive properties of Dunaliella outgrowing the contaminant species Phaeodactylum. At the end of the experiment the dominant species contributed more than 90% to the total biomass, while no loss of oil production was observed, the oil yield in the mixed being even higher than in the unialgal culture (3.15 vs. 2.28 mg). The outcomes of the induced competition suggest the use of Dunaliella as a competitive oil-producer species and especially support the potential of the experimental approach to be used for preliminary screening to drive species selection for open mass cultures.

IntroductionI The survey on the Occupancy in Collective Accommodation establishments is carded out by Istat in the frame of the Regulation （EU） n. 692/2011 concerning European statistics on tourism. It mainly collects monthly data on occupancy of tourist accommodation establishments in Italy. Although it is not expressly provided for in the Regulation n. 692/2011, the seasonal adjustment of variables on occupancy, traditionally strongly seasonal （at least in such countries as Italy）, derives mainly from the need to make short-term analysis, with more sophisticated methods then simple ratios. Moreover it permits to properly investigate the long-term trend of the phenomena.

After the proposal of a possible insertion of tourism statistics （supply side）（TS） into Framework Regulation Integrating Business Statistics （FR1BS） on which an interesting debate is in progress between Eurostat and NSls, Istat （Italian Institute of Statistics） has started a costs/benefits analysis of this integration. ASIA （Statistical Register of Active Enterprises）, built up by Istat, represents in Italy the official source about the structure and the economic performance of the enterprises. ASIA, whose statistical units are enterprises of industry and services, has been developed through the statistical integration of different administrative sources, other minor archives available （covering particular sectors） and structural business statistics currently produced by Istat. The supply side TS are produced by lstat through surveys via Intermediate Bodies （Local Authorities）： each Intermediate Body has its own local register of accommodation establishments based on Local Kind-of-activity unit （LKAU）. In this paper, the results of a comparative analysis between the statistical units as recorded in ASIA and as surveyed by TS are presented; from first outcomes, considerable issues about data quality appear both at level of coverage for the three Nace groups of the TS （also underlined in the Methodological Manual on Tourism Statistics where for Italy a difference of 70% is reported） and for loss information relating to the location of the activities （switching from LKAU to Enterprises） as well as for timeliness （ASIA has two years of delay）. Then, the administrative local tourism registers （LTR） are analysed to understand： how many they are, their dissemination in the Italian territories, their primary purpose and source, the variables contained, the frequency of updates. AIM:To ascertain the role of cardiovascular risk factors,cardiovascular diseases,standard treatments and other diseases in the development of ischemic colitis(IC).METHODS:A retrospective,case-control study was designed,using matched data and covering 161 incident cases of IC who required admission to our hospital from 1998 through *** was diagnosed on the basis of endoscopic findings and diagnostic or compatible *** were randomly chosen from a cohort of patients who were admitted in the same period and required a colonoscopy,excluding those with diagnosis of *** were matched with controls(ratio 1:2),by age and sex.A conditional logistic regression was ***:A total of 483 patients(161 cases,322 con-trols)were included;mean age 75.67±10.03 years,55.9%*** principal indications for colonos-copy in the control group were lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage(35.4%),anemia(33.9%),abdominal pain(19.9%)and diarrhea(9.6%).The endoscopic findings in this group were hemorrhoids(25.5%),diverticular disease(30.4%),polyps(19.9%)and colorectal cancer(10.2%).The following variables were associated with IC in the univariate analysis:arterial hypertension(P= 0.033);dyslipidemia(P<0.001);diabetes mellitus(P =0.025);peripheral arterial disease(P=0.004);heart failure(P=0.026);treatment with hypotensive drugs(P=0.023);angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors;(P=0.018);calcium channel antagonists(P=0.028);and acetylsalicylic acid(ASA)(P<0.001).Finally,the following variables were independently associated with the development of IC:diabetes mellitus[odds ratio(OR)1.76,95%confidence interval(CI):1.001-3.077,P=0.046];dyslipidemia(OR 2.12,95%CI:1.26-3.57,P=0.004);heart failure(OR 3.17,95%CI:1.31-7.68,P=0.01);peripheral arterial disease(OR 4.1,95%CI:1.32-12.72,P=0.015);treatment with digoxin(digitalis)(OR 0.27,95%CI:0.084-0.857,P=0.026);and ASA(OR 1.97,95%CI:1.16-3.36,P=0.012).CONCLUSION:The development of an episode of IC was independently associat
