Correlation between Intestinal Health and Coccidiosis Prevalence in Broilers during Different Seasons of the Year in Brazil from 2012 to 2018

Coccidiosis is a disease caused by intracellular protozoan parasites, specifically belonging to the genus Eimeria. These parasites target the gastrointestinal tract in different types of hosts, causing sores in the intestinal lining. The presence of these lesions reduces the animal’s ability to digest and absorb nutrients, significantly impacting their overall performance. The current study aimed to explore the potential correlation between seasonal variations and the incidence of Eimeria spp-induced lesions in broiler chickens’ gastrointestinal tracts in Brazil from 2012 to 2018. A total of 8,607 broiler chickens, aged 14 to 42 days, were sampled from 103 poultry integrated companies in Brazil to conduct intestinal health examinations. The sampling process involved selecting 3 to 6 chickens from each poultry house for examination. The assessment included various abnormalities such as shedding of intestinal cells and excessive fluid and mucus presence, thickening and tension of the intestines, food movement, roughened mucosal surface resembling a Turkish towel in the small intestine, tissue death, duodenal inflammation, intestinal inflammation, gizzard erosion, presence of worms and bedding material, and ingestion of mealworms. During the seasons, winter exhibited the highest average occurrence of Eimeria maxima microorganisms at 52.83%, with E. acervulina following closely at 26.42% in second place. In spring, E. maxima had an occurrence of 11.31%, while in fall, E. tenella had the lowest occurrence at 6.74%. When analyzing the seasonal occurrence of Eimeria, it was observed that E. maxima micro was more common during winter compared to summer (P = 0.0491). However, no discernible variation was observed in the occurrence of the remaining species across different seasons. Research findings suggest that subclinical coccidiosis is most prevalent during the winter season in Brazil. Likewise, clinical disease caused by E. acervulina is also prevalent during this time. The amphetamine derivative 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), also called ecstasy, is a neurotoxin widely consumed among young people that has increased in recent years because it is a recreational drug, of which immediate effects are known such as a greater sensation of well-being, extroversion, increased sensory perception. However, its long-term effects have been described very little in the medical literature, including damage to the heart, central nervous system, kidney, etc. One of its little-known effects is hepatotoxicity, of which few cases are known associated with fulminant hepatitis, which is a rapidly deteriorating condition that is generally associated with a syndrome of multiple organ dysfunction and death. Therefore, it is very important to know this type of damage in the short and long term. The following case is of a 39-year-old man who came to our service due to jaundice syndrome and the only history of MDMA consumption, who as the days went by met the criteria for fulminant liver failure, with damage to multiple organs (organ dysfunction syndrome).

Implementing population-based screening programs for colorectal cancer has led to an increase in the detection of large but benign histological lesions.Currently,endoscopic mucosal resection can be considered the standard technique for the removal of benign lesions of the colon due to its excellent safety profile and good clinical results.However,several studies from different geographic areas agree that many benign colon lesions are still referred for surgery.Moreover,the referral rate to surgery is not decreasing over the years,despite the theoretical improvement of endoscopic resection techniques.This article will review the leading causes for benign colorectal lesions to be referred for surgery and the influence of the endoscopist experience on the referral rate.It will also describe how to categorize a polyp as complex for resection and consider an endoscopist as an expert in endoscopic resection.And finally,we will propose a framework for the accurate and evidence-based treatment of complex benign colorectal lesions.

Our phenotype includes not only physical features,but also behavioral outputs such as motor schemes and learned skills,and is the result of a complex interaction between genetic background and environment.In fact,a good fraction of last decades’biomedical efforts were dedicated to understanding how different elements(e.g.,genetic polymorphisms,lifestyle components)participate in this interplay,ultimately contributing to affect a given phenotype up to the point of steering it towards pathology.Genetic and epigenetic elements are relatively easy to analyze individually using a reductionist approach,for instance via loss-or gain-of-function studies in cellular and animal models;the effects of nutrients,drugs,pollutants can be similarly tested as single specific stimuli.

Retinal dysfunction is the most common cause of vision loss in several retinal disorders.It has been estimated a great increase in these pathologies that are becoming more globally widespread and numerous over time,also supported by the life expectancy increment.Among different types of retinopathies,we can account some that share causes,symptoms,and treatment including diabetic retinopathy,age-related macular degeneration,glaucoma,and retinitis pigmentosa.Molecular changes,environmental factors,and genetic predisposition might be some of the main causes that drive retinal tissue to chronic inflammation and neurodegeneration in these retinopathies.The treatments available on the market contain compounds that efficiently ameliorate some of the important clinical features of these pathologies like stabilization of the intraocular pressure,reduction of eye inflammation,control of eye oxidative stress which are considered the major molecular mechanisms related to retinal dysfunction.Indeed,the most commonly used drugs are antiinflammatories,such as corticosteroids,antioxidant,hypotonic molecules and natural neuroprotective compounds.Unfortunately,these drugs,which are fundamental to treating disease symptoms,are not capable to cure the pathologies and so they are not life-changing for patients.This review provided an overview of current treatments on the market,but more interestingly,wants to be a quick window on the new treatments that are now in clinical trials.Additionally,it has been here highlighted that the recent technical enhancement of the investigation methods to identify the various retinopathies causes might be used as a sort of“precise medicine”approach to tailor the identification of molecular pathways involved and potentially study a dedicated treatment for each patient.This approach includes the use of cutting-edge technologies like gene therapy and metabolomics.

Ophthalmologic implications to consider when using hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 and induced arthritis

As the world continues to grapple with the novel coronavirus[coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)],many treatments have been proposed to help alleviate the symptoms and reduce the mortality rate.Hydroxychloroquine(HCQ)is an antimalarial drug that is typically used for several autoimmune,rheumatic,and dermatological conditions.It has also been considered to treat and prevent COVID-19 and subsequent arthritis associated with the infection.This drug is known to cause retinal toxicity,which can lead to vision impairment or loss.While the exact mechanism is not yet fully understood,it is thought to be due to the accumulation of the drug in the retinal pigment epithelium.The risk of toxicity increases with long-term use or with high doses of the drug and is more likely to occur in patients with pre-existing retinal diseases or those who are predisposed to retinal diseases.In this context,several steps can be taken to monitor and minimize the risk of ophthalmological adverse events when using HCQ to treat patients with COVID-19.

Two-Layer High-Throughput:Effective Mass Calculations Including Warping

In this paper,we perform two-layer high-throughput calculations.In the first layer,which involves changing the crystal structure and/or chemical composition,we analyze selected Ⅲ-Ⅴ semiconductors,filled and unfilled skutterudites,as well as rock salt and layered chalcogenides.The second layer searches the full Brillouin zone(BZ)for critical points within 1.5 eV(1 eV=1.602176×10^(-19)J)of the Fermi level and characterizes those points by computing the effective masses.We introduce several methods to compute the effective masses from first principles and compare them to each other.Our approach also includes the calculation of the density-of-states effective masses for warped critical points,where traditional approaches fail to give consistent results due to an underlying non-analytic behavior of the critical point.We demonstrate the need to consider the band structure in its full complexity and the value of complementary approaches to compute the effective masses.We also provide computational evidence that warping occurs only in the presence of degeneracies.
