Assessment of postcombustion carbon capture technologies for power generation

A significant proportion of power generation stems from coal-combustion processes and accordingly represents one of the largest point sources of CO_(2)emissions *** power plants are major assets with large infrastructure and engineering units and an operating life span of up to 50 ***,any process design modification to reduce greenhouse gas emissions may require significant *** of the best options to utilize existing infrastructure is to retrofit the power station fleet by adding a separation process to the flue gas,a practice known as postcombustion capture(PCC).This review examines the recent PCC development and provides a summary and assessment of the state of play in this area and its potential applicability to the power generation *** major players including the various institutes,government,and industry consortia are identified along with flue gas PCC demonstration scale *** the PCC technologies reviewed,amine-based absorption is preeminent,being both the most mature and able to be adapted immediately,to the appropriate scale,for power station flue gas with minimal technical ***,current commercial applications serve niches in the merchant CO_(2)market,while a substantial number of smaller scale test facilities are reported in the literature with actual CO_(2)capture motivated demonstrations now *** membrane/absorption systems,also known as membrane contactors,offer the potential for the lowest energy requirements,possibly 10%of current direct scrubbers but are at an early stage of *** methods being actively pursued as R&D projects include solid absorbents,solid adsorbents,gas membrane separators,and cryogenic *** variety and different maturities of these competing technologies make technical comparison largely subjective,but useful insights could be gained through the development and application of econometric techniques such as‘real options’within this ***

Arboviral diseases are viral infections transmitted to humans through the bites of arthropods,such as mosquitoes,often causing a variety of pathologies associated with high levels of morbidity and *** the past decades,these infections have proven to be a significant challenge to health systems worldwide,particularly following the considerable geographic expansion of the dengue virus(DENV)and its most recent outbreak in Latin America as well as the difficult-tocontrol outbreaks of yellow fever virus(YFV),chikungunya virus(CHIKV),and Zika virus(ZIKV),leaving behind a substantial portion of the population with complications related to these ***,the world is experiencing a period of intense globalization,which,combined with global warming,directly contributes to wider dissemination of arbovirus vectors across the ***,all continents remain on high alert for potential new ***,this review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the pathogenesis of the four main arboviruses today(DENV,ZIKV,YFV,and CHIKV)discussing their viral characteristics,immune responses,and mechanisms of viral evasion,as well as important clinical aspects for patient *** includes associated symptoms,laboratory tests,treatments,existing or developing vaccines and the main associated complications,thus integrating a broad historical,scientific and clinical approach.

Influence of proton pump inhibitors in the development of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis

AIM To investigate whether the use of proton pump inhibitors(PPIs) increases the incidence of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis(SBP) in patients with cirrhosis and *** An historical cohort study was carried out in cirrhotic outpatients with ascites followed in a specialized clinic at a tertiary hospital in Southern Brazil. Patient charts were reviewed to collect information on the variables of interest as the use of PPIs. Primary outcome was defined as development of SBP during the study period. SBP was diagnosed based on ascitic fluid polymorphonuclear cell count ≥ 250 cells/mm3 without evidence of an intraabdominal, surgically treatable source of *** Of 738 cirrhotic patients, 582(58.2% male) were enrolled, with mean age of 53.6 ± 12 years. Hepatitis C virus infection(36.2%) and alcohol abuse(25.6%) were the main etiologies of cirrhosis. The presence of ascites was detected in 299(51.4%) patients during the development of the study. Nineteen patients with previous diagnosis of SBP undergoing secondary prophylaxis and 22 patients with insufficient PPI data were further excluded. Of 258 patients with ascites, 151 used PPIs, and 34 developed SBP(22.5%). Among 107 non-users of PPIs, 23 developed SBP(21.5%)(HR = 1.44, 95%CI: 0.85-2.47, P = 0.176). The median follow-up time of patients using PPI was 27 mo vs 32 mo for non-users. Univariate analysis of the risk factors associated with the development of SBP revealed a significant association of SPB with the severity of liver disease according to the Child-Turcotte-Pugh(CTP) score. Multivariate analysis confirmed that CTP score was the only independent variable influencing the occurrence of SBP. Survival at 60 mo(Kaplan-Meier analysis) was similar in users and non-users of PPI, independently of the presence of SBP(58.4% vs 62.7% respectively, P = 0.66). For patients with SBP, survival at 60 mo was 55.1%, vs 61.7% in patients without SBP(P = 0.34). CONCLUSION In conclusion, the rate of SBP was not

The production of plastics has exponentially increased over time such that the observation of microplastics in the oceans has become a major concern given how frequently these particles and marine biota may *** can be ingested by diverse species,including invertebrates,which can lead to physical damage due to their small size and potentially chemical damage related to the ingestion of monomers,polymeric additives,or adsorbed *** study reports on the first evidence of microplastics in Mnemiopsis *** were described by type,quantified,and had their chemical composition *** total,328 samples of microplastic(MP)candidates were observed:blue fibers were the most abundant,followed by black,red,and green fibers as well as blue *** types of microplastics were chemically identified as polyurethane,unplasticized polyvinylchloride,and polyethylene ***,this study demonstrated that Mnemiopsis leidyi have the capacity to incorporate *** more studies are needed,Mnemiopsis leidyi is relatively abundant on the Atlantic coast and should be recommended for use as a bioindicator for microplastics.

Analysis of 472,688 Severe Cases of COVID-19 in Brazil Showed Lower Mortality in Those Vaccinated against Influenza

Objective: To analyze the severe cases of COVID-19 in Brazil in 2020 and compare those vaccinated and unvaccinated against influenza in invasive ventilation, admission in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and deaths. Method: Cross-sectional study with public data from the OpendataSUS platform, regarding confirmed severe cases for COVID-19 in Brazil in the year 2020. data were analyzed by SPSS, from the chi-square test of independence and binary logistic regression. Results: The population was 472,688 cases and 177,640 deaths, with a lethality of 37.58% in severe cases. The test of independence was highly significant in vaccinated survivors (<0.0001), and regression showed an almost twofold odds ratio for invasive ventilation, ICU admission, and death in unvaccinated cases. Conclusion: We recommend mass influenza vaccination as an adjuvant in combating the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil.

Interweavings of Alan Turing＇s Mathematics and Sociology of Knowledge

This paper starts from the analysis of how Alan Turing proceeded to build the notion of computability in his famous 1936 text ＂On computable numbers, with an application to the Entscheidungsproblem＂. Looking in detail at his stepwise construction, which starts from the materialities to achieve a satisfactory level of abstraction, it is considered how his way of doing mathematics was one that constructs mathematical knowledge by evading a definite separation between matter and form; in this way, making the world and language come together. Following the same line of reasoning, it is argued in this paper that the abstract and the concrete, the deduction and the induction, the technical and the social as well as the objective and the subjective are unthinkable as pure entities. By considering the controversies and discussions from the mid-nineteenth century until now, it is shown that local （social） elements necessarily participate in what is usually considered ＂technical content＂ or ＂objectivity＂. While Alan Turing was a precursor of what today might be said to be an ＂anthropological approach to mathematical culture＂, unveiling and reviving approaches that enable the axis of authority for mathematics, logic and computing to be shifted, he also opened different paths for the construction of a variety of mathematical knowledge as well.
