Soil and Vegetation Seasonal changes in the Grazing Andean Mountain Grasslands

Andean grasslands ecosystems are fragile environments with rigorous climatologic conditions and low and variable food for the grazing. The Apolobamba area is located in the Bolivian Andean Mountains. Its high grasslands provide a natural habitat for wild and domestic camelids such as vicuna(Vicugna vicugna) and alpaca(Lama pacos). The botanical diversity plays an essential role in maintaining vital ecosystem functions. The objectives of this research were to determine the seasonal changes in soil properties, to study the vegetation changes during the wet and dry seasons and the influence of soil properties and camelid densities on the vegetation in the Apolobamba grasslands. Four zones with different vicuna populations were selected to be studied. The following soil parameters were determined: total organic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorous, cation exchange capacity, exchangeable cations, pH and texture. The vegetation season changes were studied through botanical identification, above-ground biomass, plant cover and species richness. Results showed that some soil properties such as c/N ratio, cEc, silt and clay percentages kept stable against the seasonal changes. Generally, soil nutrients were relatively higher during the dry season in the surface and subsurface. The results did not point out the predominant vegetation growth during the wet season. The seasonal vegetation growth depended on each species. Thegood soil fertility corresponded to the highest plant cover. Soil fertility presented no influence on the above-ground biomass of the collected species. The negative influence of camelid grazing on soil properties could not be assessed. However, overgrazing could affect some plant species. Therefore, protection is needed in order to preserve the biodiversity in the Andean mountain grasslands.

conserved curvature of RNA Polymerase Ⅰ core Promoter Beyond rRNA Genes: The case of the Tritryps

In trypanosomatids, the RNA polymerase I （RNAPI）-dependent promoters controlling the ribosomal RNA （rRNA） genes have been well identified. Although the RNAPI transcription machinery recognizes the DNA conformation instead of the DNA sequence of promoters, no con- formational study has been reported for these promoters. Here we present the in silico analysis of the intrinsic DNA curvature of the rRNA gene core promoters in Trypanosoma brucei, Trypanosoma cruzi, and Leiskmania major. We found that, in spite of the absence of sequence conservation, these promoters hold conformational properties similar to other eukaryotic rRNA promoters. Our results also indicated that the intrinsic DNA curvature pattern is conserved within the Leishmania genus and also among strains of T. cruzi and T. brucei. Furthermore, we analyzed the impact of point mutations on the intrinsic curvature and their impact on the promoter activity. Furthermore, we found that the core promoters of protein-coding genes transcribed by RNAPI in T. brucei show the same conserved conformational characteristics. Overall, our results indicate that DNA intrinsic curvature of the rRNA gene core promoters is conserved in these ancient eukaryotes and such con- served curvature might be a requirement of RNAPI machinery for transcription of not only rRNA genes but also protein-coding genes.

Effect of pH value and calcination temperature on synthesis and characteristics of cu-Ni nano-alloys

cu?Ni nano-alloys were prepared using precursors synthesized by the citrate-gel method. The effects of initial solution pH value and calcination temperature on the composition, crystalline structure, purity, morphology, homogeneity and grain size of cu?Ni nanoparticles were investigated. Both the parameters significantly affect the crystalline structure, composition and grain size. cu?Ni alloys prepared at pH value of 1 do not contain impurities, and their compositions are cu0.42Ni0.58, cu0.45Ni0.55 and cu0.52Ni0.48 reduced at 300, 400 and 500 °c, respectively. The grain size grows with the increase of calcination temperature for the precursor prepared at pH values of 1.6 and 3. The Ni content of the alloys gradually increases with the increase of calcination temperature at pH value of 3.
