Modelling fuel loads of understorey vegetation and forest floor components in pine stands in NW Spain

In this study,310 destructively sampled plots were used to develop two equation systems for the three main pine species in NW Spain(***;*** and ***):one for estimating loads of understorey fuel components by size and condition(live and dead)and another one for forest floor *** systems of equations were simultaneously fitted for estimating fuel loads using overstorey,understorey and forest floor variables as *** systems of equations included both the effect of pine species and the effect of understorey compositions dominated by ferns-brambles or by woody species,due to their obvious structural and physiological *** general,the goodness-of-fit statistics indicated that the estimates were reasonably robust and accurate for all of the fuel *** best results were obtained for total understorey vegetation,total forest floor and raw humus fuel loads,with more than 76%of the observed variability explained,whereas the poorest results were obtained for coarse fuel loads of understory vegetation with a 53%of observed variability *** reduce the overall costs associated with the field inventories necessary for operational use of the models,the additive systems were fitted again using only overstorey variables as potential *** relationships for fine(<6 mm)and total understorey vegetation and total forest floor fuel loads were obtained,indicating the complexity of the forest overstorey-understorey and overstorey-forest floor ***,these models explained around 52%of the observed ***,equations estimating the total understorey vegetation and the total forest floor fuel loads based only on canopy cover were *** models explained only 26%-32%of the observed variability;however,their main advantage is that although understorey vegetation in forested landscapes is largely invisible to remote sensing,canopy cover can be estimated with moderate accuracy,allowin

Trifocal toric intraocular lenses in eyes with low amount of corneal astigmatism

Sibling cannibalism is relatively common in nature,but its evolution in birds and certain other vertebrates with extended parental care had been ***,however,we demonstrate its regular occurrence in two European populations of the Eurasian hoopoe(Upupa epops)and explore possible adaptive and non-adaptive *** showed that sibling cannibalism was more frequently detected in Spain(51.7%)than in Austria(5.9%).In these two populations,the hoopoes laid similar clutch sizes,resulting in similar fledging production,but hatching failures were more frequent in the northern ***,having more nestlings condemned to die in the southern population may explain the higher incidence of sibling *** accordance with this interpretation,hatching span and failure,but not breeding date,explained the probability of sibling cannibalism in the Spanish hoopoes,while all three variables predicted brood reduction ***,experimental food supply reduced the probability of sibling cannibalism,but not the intensity of brood ***,females allocated fewer resources to the smallest nestlings when they were going to starve,but not necessarily when they were going to be used as food for their *** results suggest that hoopoes produce extra eggs that,in the case of reduced hatching failure and food scarcity,produce nestlings that are used to feed older *** findings provide the first evidence that sibling cannibalism occurs regularly in a bird species,thus expanding our evolutionary understanding of clutch size,hatching asynchrony,parent-offspring conflict,infanticide,and sibling cannibalism in the animal kingdom.

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation(alloHSCT)is a life-saving procedure used for the treatment of selected hematological malignancies,inborn errors of metabolism,and bone marrow *** role of neutrophils in alloHSCT has been traditionally evaluated only in the context of their ability to act as a first line of defense against ***,recent evidence has highlighted neutrophils as key effectors of innate and adaptive immune responses through a wide array of newly discovered ***,neutrophils are emerging as highly versatile cells that are able to acquire different,often opposite,functional capacities depending on the microenvironment and their differentiation ***,we review the current knowledge on the multiple functions that neutrophils exhibit through the different stages of alloHSCT,from the hematopoietic stem cell(HSC)mobilization in the donor to the immunological reconstitution that occurs in the recipient following HSC *** also discuss the influence exerted on neutrophils by the immunosuppressive drugs delivered in the course of alloHSCT as part of graft-versushost disease(GVHD)***,the potential involvement of neutrophils in alloHSCT-related complications,such as transplant-associated thrombotic microangiopathy(TA-TMA),acute and chronic GVHD,and cytomegalovirus(CMV)reactivation,is also *** on the data reviewed herein,the role played by neutrophils in alloHSCT is far greater than a simple antimicrobial ***,much remains to be investigated in terms of the potential functions that neutrophils might exert during a highly complex procedure such as alloHSCT.

Social distancing and testing as optimal strategies against the spread of COVID-19 in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas

At the beginning of August 2020,the Rio Grande Valley(RGV)of Texas experienced a rapid increase of coronavirus disease 2019(abbreviated as COVID-19)cases and *** study aims to determine the optimal levels of effective social distancing and testing to slow the virus spread at the outset of the *** use an age-stratified eight compartment epidemiological model to depict COVID-19 transmission in the community and within *** a simulated 120-day outbreak period data we obtain a post 180-days period optimal control strategy *** results show that easing social distancing between adults by the end of the 180-day period requires very strict testing a month later and then daily testing rates of 5%followed by isolation of positive *** social distancing rates in adults from 50%to 25%requires both children and seniors to maintain social distancing rates of 50%for nearly the entire period while maintaining maximum testing rates of children and seniors for 150 of the 180 days considered in this *** have higher contact rates which leads to transmission based on our model,emphasizing the need for caution when considering school reopenings.

Background The prognostic role of diabetes mellitus(DM)in elderly patients with myocardial infarction-related cardiogenic shock(MI-CS)remains *** information exists about the impact of intensive cardiac care unit(ICCU)and revascularization on outcomes of elderly patients with *** aimed to assess the prognostic impact of DM according to age in patients with MI-CS,and to analyze the impact ICCU management and revascularization on in-hospital mortality in MI-CS patients at older *** Discharge episodes with diagnosis of CS associated with MI were selected from the Spanish National Health System’s Basic Data *** were classified according to their availability of *** outcome measured was in-hospital *** A total of 23,590 episodes of MI-CS were identified,of whom 12,447(52.8%)were in patients aged≥75 *** impact of DM on in-hospital mortality was different among age *** in younger patients,DM was associated to a higher mortality risk(0.52 vs.0.47,OR=1.12,95%CI:1.06–1.18,χ^2<0.001),this association became non-significant in older patients(0.76 vs.0.81,χ^2=0.09).Adjusted mortality rate of MI-CS aged≥75 years was lower in patients admitted to hospitals with ICCU(adjusted mortality rate:74.2%vs.77.7%,P<0.001)and in patients undergoing revascularization(74.9%vs.77.3%,P<0.001).Conclusions Prognostic impact of DM in patients with MI-CS was different according to age,with a significantly lower impact at older *** availability of ICCU and revascularization were associated with better outcomes in these complex patients.

Early Detection of <i>Cercospora</i>Species in Soybean Plants: Immunologic and Molecular Methods

Late-cycle diseases (LCD) cause a significant deterioration in quality and reduce yields in soybean crops. In Argentina, in particular, leaf blight and purple seed stain, caused by the agent Cercospora kikuchii, and frog eye spot, caused by C. sojina, are the prevailing sources of diseases. The early, rapid and accurate detection of these phytopathogens becomes essential, and would contribute to preserving both the environment and the health of humans and animals by preventing the wasteful or improper use of chemicals such as pesticides. In order to detect Cercospora species in soybean plants at an early stage, immunochemical and molecular techniques were developed in this work. Strains from the NITE Biological Resource Center collection (Japan): Cercospora kikuchii NBRC 6711 and Cercospora sojina NBRC 6715 and regional isolates of C. kikuchii were used. To develop Dot-Blot and PCR techniques, experiments with plants undergoing different treatments were carried out: those experimentally inoculated with these fungi, those treated with sterile water and healthy plants as well. Both techniques allowed the detection, at early stages, of Cercospora species involved in two of the most frequent LCD in the country, when the cercosporin concentration produced by the fungus was higher than 3.93 ± 0.39 nmol·cyl-1 ±SD. The sensitivity between both techniques was very different. While Dot-Blot allowed the detection of the disease 4 days after inoculation, PCR detected it after 4 hours, even without visible symptoms of the disease.

Effect of Soya Lecithin on Solubilization and Biodegradation of Pentachlorophenol by <i>Anthracophyllum discolor</i>

The effect of soya lecithin (SL) on solubilization and biodegradation of pentachlorophenol (PCP) by Anthracophyllum discolor was evaluated. Besides, the PCP effect on critical micelle concentration (CMC) of SL and the effect of PCP and SL on the ligninolytic activity of A. discolor were evaluated. The PCP solubilization test was performed for 100, 200 and 400 mg·L-1 with SL solution varying concentrations of ranging from 0 to 0.9 g·L-1. The effect of PCP (5 to 20 mg·L-1) on CMC of SL by conductivity was evaluated. The effect of SL (0 to 0.9 g·L-1) on biodegradation of PCP (21.4 mg·L-1) in modified Kirk medium was studied. The results showed that SL addition enhanced PCP solubility in water. The solubilities of 100, 200 and 400 mg·L-1 of PCP were about 4.2, 5.0 and 2.5 times higher than their solubility in pure water when the system was added with 0.9 g·L-1 of SL. We found that the increase in PCP concentration caused a decrease in the CMC value. In the biodegradation assay, in liquid medium supplemented with 0.9 g·L-1 of SL, the 94.4% of PCP was biodegraded after 26 days of incubation. In contrast, in the control assay (without SL), the 76.5% of PCP was removed. The PCP degradation was confirmed by the presence of its metabolites. During biodegradation assay, A. discolor mainly produced manganese peroxidase reaching a maximum of 96.8 U·g-1 (dw) when the culture medium was added with 0.6 g·L-1 of SL. These results show that SL can be applied to increasing the bioavailability and biodegradation of PCP.
