A total of 97 surface sediment samples were collected from the continental shelf and slope of the western Bay of Bengal to assess the potential application of Asterorotalia trispinosa as a paleomonsoon proxy. The relative abundance of living as well as total （living and dead） A. trispinosa ranges from being absent to a maximum of-31%. The highest abundance ofA. trispinosa is close to the outfall region of the Ganga-Brahmaputra Rivers and decreases away from the river mouths. Contrary to that, A. trispinosa is rare in front of both the Cauvery and Pennar river outfall regions, in the central part of the western Bay of Bengal. The living A. trispinosa abundance is the lowest in between two major river systems, viz. Ganga-Brahmaputra-Mahanadi and Krishna-Godavari. The relative abundance of both the total and living A. trispinosa is strongly positively correlated with ambient seawater temperature, and negatively correlated with %Corg and salinity. Based on the spatial distribution, we conclude that A. trispinosa is stenohaline in nature, rather than euryhaline, and further that the increased relative abundance of A. trispinosa indicates warmer and only marginally hyposaline environment. Even though the ecological preference of A. trispinosa suggests it as a potential paleomonsoon proxy, the restricted distribution implies limited application.

Dyslipidemia is a condition in which the lipid levels are altered in the body.The fixed oils(FOs)from spices,Alpinia galanga,Cinnamomum zeylanicum,Trigonella foenum-graecum,Foeniculum vulgare,and Myristica fragrans were evaluated as potential sources of anti-dyslipidemic activity.The nutraceutical compound fractions such as polyphenols,tocopherols,γ-oryzanol,and phytosterols were extracted from spice FOs,tested individually and in combination for cytotoxicity and their effect on lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 and Hep-G2 cell lines.Further,the best performing FOs in the in vitro studies were fed to high fat diet-induced dyslipidemic C57BL/6 mice and studied its activity in the liver and adipose tissue.The in vitro assays showed no cytotoxicity in the studied FOs up to 200μg/mL concentration.Out of all the studied nutraceutical compound fractions,theγ-oryzanol and phytosterols fractions showed a reduction in the accumulation of lipid droplets in 3T3-L1 cell lines.Moreover,the reconstituted nutraceutical fractions from C.zeylanicum,T.foenum-graecum,and F.vulgare FOs exhibited a dose dependent inhibition of lipid accumulation compared to the fractions of A.galanga and M.fragrans FOs.The in vivo studies confirmed the anti-dyslipidemic activity of C.zeylanicum FO that showed an improved lipid profile,antioxidant enzymes,and reduced lipid droplets in the liver and adipose tissue.The histopathological images of the liver and adipose tissue showed a comparable visualisation in Atorvastatin,and C.zeylanicum fed group mice.Hence,the spice FOs are potentially efficacious anti-dyslipidemic functional food ingredients and could be safer than statins.

In December 2019,a new strain of coronavirus was discovered in China,and the World Health Organization declared it a pandemic in March 2020.The majority of people with coronavirus disease 19(COVID-19)exhibit no or only mild symptoms such as fever,cough,anosmia,and headache.Meanwhile,approximately 15%develop a severe lung infection over the course of 10 d,resulting in respiratory failure,which can lead to multi-organ failure,coagulopathy,and death.Since the beginning of the pandemic,it appears that there has been consideration that preexisting chronic liver disease may predispose to deprived consequences in conjunction with COVID-19.Furthermore,extensive liver damage has been linked to immune dysfunction and coagulopathy,which leads to a more severe COVID-19 outcome.Besides that,people with COVID-19 frequently have abnormal liver function,with more significant elevations in alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase in patients with severe COVID-19 compared to those with mild/moderate disease.This review focuses on the pathogenesis of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2(SARS-CoV-2)infection in the liver,as well as the use of liver chemistry as a prognostic tool during COVID-19.We also evaluate the findings for viral infection of hepatocytes,and look into the potential mechanisms behind SARS-CoV-2-related liver damage.

This review describes woodchucks chronically infected with the woodchuck hepatitis virus(WHV)as an animal model for hepatocarcinogenesis and treatment of primary liver cancer or hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)induced by the hepatitis B virus(HBV).Since laboratory animal models susceptible to HBV infection are limited,woodchucks experimentally infected with WHV,a hepatitis virus closely related to HBV,are increasingly used to enhance our understanding of virus-host interactions,immune response,and liver disease progression.A correlation of severe liver pathogenesis with high-level viral replication and deficient antiviral immunity has been established,which are present during chronic infection after WHV inoculation of neonatal woodchucks for modeling vertical HBV transmission in humans.HCC in chronic carrier woodchucks develops 17 to 36 mo after neonatal WHV infection and involves liver tumors that are comparable in size,morphology,and molecular gene signature to those of HBV-infected patients.Accordingly,woodchucks with WHV-induced liver tumors have been used for the improvement of imaging and ablation techniques of human HCC.In addition,drug efficacy studies in woodchucks with chronic WHV infection have revealed that prolonged treatment with nucleos(t)ide analogs,alone or in combination with other compounds,minimizes the risk of liver disease progression to HCC.More recently,woodchucks have been utilized in the delineation of mechanisms involved in innate and adaptive immune responses against WHV during acute,self-limited and chronic infections.Therapeutic interventions based on modulating the deficient host antiviral immunity have been explored in woodchucks for inducing functional cure in HBV-infected patients and for reducing or even delaying associated liver disease sequelae,including the onset of HCC.Therefore,woodchucks with chronic WHV infection constitute a well-characterized,fully immunocompetent animal model for HBV-induced liver cancer and for preclinical evaluation of the safety and efficacy of new mod

Accurate classification of cardiac arrhythmias is a crucial task because of the non-stationary nature of electrocardiogram(ECG)signals.In a life-threatening situation,an automated system is necessary for early detection of beat abnormalities in order to reduce the mortality rate.In this paper,we propose an automatic classification system of ECG beats based on the multi-domain features derived from the ECG signals.The experimental study was evaluated on ECG signals obtained from the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database.The feature set comprises eight empirical mode decomposition(EMD)based features,three features from variational mode decomposition(VMD)and four features from RR intervals.In total,15 features are ranked according to a ranker search approach and then used as input to the support vector machine(SVM)and C4.5 decision tree classifiers for classifying six types of arrhythmia beats.The proposed method achieved best result in C4.5 decision tree classifier with an accuracy of 98.89%compared to cubic-SVM classifier which achieved an accuracy of 95.35%only.Besides accuracy measures,all other parameters such as sensitivity(Se),specificity(Sp)and precision rates of 95.68%,99.28%and 95.8%was achieved better in C4.5 classifier.Also the computational time of 0.65 s with an error rate of 0.11 was achieved which is very less compared to SVM.The multi-domain based features with decision tree classifier obtained the best results in classifying cardiac arrhythmias hence the system could be used efficiently in clinical practices.

Evaluation of Depression and Quality of Life in Patients With Psoriasis

Objective:To measure the prevalence of depression in patients with psoriasis and to evaluate the relationship between the severity of psoriasis and depression and its effect on patients’quality of life.Methods:A total of 154 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of psoriasis were assessed to determine the severity of psoriasis based on the psoriasis area and severity index score,presence,and severity of depression using the patient health questionnaire 9,and quality of life using the dermatology life quality index 10.Pearson correlation coefficient was used to demonstrate the relationship between continuous variables with 95%confidence intervals(CIs);P<0.00001 was taken to indicate statistical significance.Results:The severity of psoriasis was mild in 36.36%of patients,moderate in 25.97%,severe in 32.47%,and very severe in 5.20%.Of the 154 patients,139(90.3%)had depression;the severity of depression was mild in most affected patients(46.7%)and severe in 2.6%of patients.Psoriasis had a moderate effect on the quality of life in 37.01%of patients and a very large effect in 33.77%of patients.The severity of psoriasis was positively correlated with depression(Pearson correlation coefficient,r=0.42,P<0.00001,95%CI:0.28–0.54)and quality of life(r=0.43,P<0.00001,95%CI:0.29–0.55).Conclusion:Depression is a common comorbidity in patients with psoriasis.The severity of psoriasis is positively correlated with the severity of depression and is associated with poor quality of life.

Open Peer Review in Scientific Publishing: A Web Mining Study of Peer J Authors and Reviewers

Purpose: To understand how authors and reviewers are accepting and embracing Open Peer Review(OPR), one of the newest innovations in the Open Science movement.Design/methodology/approach: This research collected and analyzed data from the Open Access journal Peer J over its first three years(2013–2016). Web data were scraped, cleaned, and structured using several Web tools and programs. The structured data were imported into a relational database. Data analyses were conducted using analytical tools as well as programs developed by the researchers.Findings: Peer J, which supports optional OPR, has a broad international representation of authors and referees. Approximately 73.89% of articles provide full review histories. Of the articles with published review histories, 17.61% had identities of all reviewers and 52.57% had at least one signed reviewer. In total, 43.23% of all reviews were signed. The observed proportions of signed reviews have been relatively stable over the period since the Journal’s inception.Research limitations: This research is constrained by the availability of the peer review history data. Some peer reviews were not available when the authors opted out of publishing their review histories. The anonymity of reviewers made it impossible to give an accurate count of reviewers who contributed to the review process. Practical implications: These findings shed light on the current characteristics of OPR. Given the policy that authors are encouraged to make their articles’ review history public and referees are encouraged to sign their review reports, the three years of Peer J review data demonstrate that there is still some reluctance by authors to make their reviews public and by reviewers to identify themselves. Originality/value: This is the first study to closely examine Peer J as an example of an OPR model journal. As Open Science moves further towards open research, OPR is a final and critical component. BACKGROUND The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),a pandemic contributing to more than 105 million cases and more than 2.3 million deaths worldwide,was described to be frequently accompanied by extrapulmonary manifestations,including liver dysfunction.Liver dysfunction and elevated liver enzymes were observed in about 53%of COVID-19 patients.AIM To gain insight into transcriptional abnormalities in liver tissue of severe COVID-19 patients that may result in liver dysfunction.METHODS The transcriptome of liver autopsy samples from severe COVID-19 patients against those of non-COVID donors was analyzed.Differentially expressed genes were identified from normalized RNA-seq data and analyzed for the enrichment of functional clusters and pathways.The differentially expressed genes were then compared against the genetic signatures of liver diseases including cirrhosis,fibrosis,non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD),and hepatitis A/B/C.Gene expression of some differentially expressed genes was assessed in the blood samples of severe COVID-19 patients with liver dysfunction using qRT-PCR.RESULTS Analysis of the differential transcriptome of the liver tissue of severe COVID-19 patients revealed a significant upregulation of transcripts implicated in tissue remodeling including G-coupled protein receptors family genes,DNAJB1,IGF2,EGFR,and HDGF.Concordantly,the differential transcriptome of severe COVID-19 liver tissues substantially overlapped with the disease signature of liver diseases characterized with pathological tissue remodeling(liver cirrhosis,Fibrosis,NAFLD,and hepatitis A/B/C).Moreover,we observed a significant suppression of transcripts implicated in metabolic pathways as well as mitochondrial function,including cytochrome P450 family members,ACAD11,CIDEB,GNMT,and GPAM.Consequently,drug and xenobiotics metabolism pathways are significantly suppressed suggesting a decrease in liver detoxification capacity.In correspondence with the RNA-seq data analysis,we observed a significant upregulation of DNAJB1 and HSP9

The synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of ruthenium complexes（R-l to R-8） of the type[Ru（A）2（B）],（where A = 1,10-phenanthroline/2,2′-bipyridine and B = 3.4.5-tri-OCH_3DPC,4-CH3-DPC,4-N-（CH3）2-DPC,4-NO2-DPC arc described. These ligands form bidentate octahedral ruthenium complexes.The title complexes were subjected to in vitro cytotoxic activity measurements against the human cancer T-lymphocyte cell lines MTT assay.In vitro evaluation of these ruthenium complexes revealed cytotoxic activity from 0.24 to 1.4μg/mL against CEM,0.44 to 1.9μg/mL against Molt4/C8.0.28 to 1.5μg/mL against L1210,0.24 to 0.98μg/mL against HL60,and 0.25 to 1.2μg/mL against BEL7402,depending the nature of the compound.
