Portal vein pulsatility index is a more important indicator than congestion index in the clinical evaluation of right heart function

AIM： To study the changes of portal blood flow in congestive heart failure. METHODS： We studied the congestion index （CI） and portal vein pulsatility index （PI） in patients with varied degrees of congestive heart failure using.ultrasonic Doppler. Ten patients with mean right atrial pressure （RA）〈10 mmHg were classified as group 1 and the remaining 10 patients with RA〉 10 mmHg as group 2. RESULTS： There were no difference on cardiac index （HI, P= 0.28）, aortic pressure （AO, P= 0.78）, left ventricular end-diastolic pressure （LVED, P=0.06）, maximum portal blood velocity （Vmax, P= 0.17）, mean portal blood velocity （Vmean, P=0.15） and portal blood flow volume （PBF, P= 0.95） between the two groups. Group 2 patients had higher pulmonary wedge pressure （PW, 29.9 ± 9.3 mmHg vs 14.6±7.3 mmHg, P=0.002）, pulmonary arterial pressure （PA, 46.3± 13.2 mmHg vs 25.0±8.2 mmHg, P=0.004）, RA （17.5±5.7 mmHg vs 4.7±2.4 mmHg, P〈 0.001）, right ventricular end-diastolic pressure （RVED, 18.3±5.6 mmHg vs 6.4±2.7 mmHg, P〈0.001）, CI （8.7±2.4 vs 5.8± 1.2, P=0.03）, and PI （87.8±32.3% vs 27.0±7.4%, P〈0.001） than Group 1. CI was correlated with PI （P〈0.001）, PW （P〈0.001）, PA （P〈0.001）, RA （P=0.043）, RVED （P=0.005）, HI （P〈0.001）, AO （P〈0.001）, CO （P〈0.001）, LVED （P〈0.001）, Vmax （P〈0.001）, Vmax （P〈0.001）, cross-sectional area of the main portal vein （P〈0.001） and PBF （P〈0.001）. CI could be as high as 8.3 in patients with RA〈 10 mmHg and as low as 5.9 in those with RA≥10 mmHg.CONCLUSION： Our data show that RI is a more significant indicator than CI in the clinical evaluation of high RA≥ 10 mmHg, whereas CI is better than PI in the assessment of left heart function.

Crystallization of μc-Si on plastic substrate by using.a pulsed double-frequency YAG laser

Thin film transistors （TFTs） of microcrystalline silicon （μc-Si） can provide higher mobility and stability than that of a-Si and better uniformity than that of poly-Si TFTs, and it would be more suitable to be applied to larger-area AMOLEDs. By using.2coYAG laser ann. ealing, crystalline μc-Si thin film on plastic substrate has been investigated and the proper laser energy needed for crystallization has been indicated. It has been found that the dehydrogenation process at 300-450℃ for a few of hours could be omitted by decreasing.the H content in the crystallization precursor, which is suitable for laser crystallization on plastic substrates. The crystalline volume fraction （Xc） and the grain size of the resulted μc-Si could be adjusted by controlling the laser energy. By this method, the μc-Si on plastic substrate with Xc and grain size is respectively 85% （at the maximum） and 50 nm.

AIM:To investigate the antioxidative status of patients with alcoholic liver disease(ALD) in southeastern ***:Our study comprised 27 patients with ALD recruited from Taitung Mackay Memorial Hospital,located in southeastern *** with ALD included 12 non-aborigines(12 men) and 15 aborigines(11 men and 4 women).According to the severity of ALD,patients with ALD included 10 with hepatitis(9 men and 1 woman) and 17 with cirrhosis(14 men and 3 women).Twenty-two age-and gender-matched healthy adultsserved as the control group in this *** blood(10 mL) of each subject was drawn into EDTA-containing tubes after 8 h overnight ***:Compared to the control group,patients with ALD showed significantly lower erythrocytic catalase(11.1 ± 0.7 U/mg Hb vs 8.0 ± 0.7 U/mg Hb,P < 0.05) and superoxide dismutase(9.5 ± 1.6 U/mg Hb vs 3.0 ± 0.2 U/mg Hb,P < 0.05) ***,the erythrocytic reduced glutathione/oxidized glutathione ratio was signif icantly lower in ALD patients than that in the control group(38.1 ± 5.4 vs 15.7 ± 1.9,P < 0.05).The results revealed that patients with ALD experienced more oxidative stress than those in the control *** non-aboriginal,but not the aboriginal,ALD group had higher erythrocytic glutathione peroxidase(GPX) activity than that in the control group(46.1 ± 7.8 U/g Hb vs 27.9 ± 2.2 U/g Hb,P < 0.05).Hepatitis,but not cirrhosis,ALD patients had higher erythrocytic GPX activity than that in the control group(44.3 ± 8.6 U/g Hb vs 27.9 ± 2.2 U/g Hb,P < 0.05).CONCLUSION:Our results indicate that both ethnicity and the severity of ALD may cause different erythrocytic antioxidative enzyme activities especially GPX activity.

Range gated is a laser ranging technique that has been applied in various fields due to its good application prospects. In order to improve the effectiveness of this method, influence factors contributing to the system performance should be well understood. Thus this paper performs theoretical and experimental investigation to comprehend the effects caused by multiple factors on range gated reconstruction. Our study focuses on the distance, target reflection, and acquisition time step parameter where their impacts on the quality of range reconstruction are analyzed. The presented experimental results show the expected trends of range error to support the validity of our theoretical model and discussion which can be used in future improvement works.

Assessment of Spatial and Temporal Variations of Water Quality for Future Mariculture Operation in Ambong Bay, Sabah, Malaysia

Study was conducted with the aim to understand the temporal and spatial variations of water quality parameters (temperature, salinity, pH, DO, TSS, NO3-, NO2-, NH3-N and PO4-P, and phytoplankton cell density) in Ambong Bay, Sabah, Malaysia in order to provide reference for future mariculture development in the bay. Samplings were carried out once a month in two stations (coastal and open sea) within the bay for 12 months period from September 2015 to August 2016. Results showed that there were significant differences in pH and NO2- when compared spatially, whereas salinity, DO, TSS, phytoplankton cell density, NO3-, NH3-N, and PO4-P were temporally significant. The fermentation processes by anaerobic bacteria, organic acids from decaying vegetation and acidic clays in the mangrove soils might explain the significant spatial differences in pH and NO2-. The bay was dominated by dinoflagellate, Prorocentrum spp. (mean abundance of 16.23% and 24.44%, respectively) a potentially toxic algae species. Correlation matrix showed that NH3-N was positively correlated with PO4-P (r = 0.475, p < 0.05) but negatively correlated with salinity (r = –0.517, p < 0.01). Besides, salinity was positively correlated with DO (r = 0.505, p < 0.05) and TSS (r = 0.408, p < 0.05). In addition, DO and TSS were also positively correlated (r = 0.451, p < 0.05). Phytoplankton cell density was positively correlated with TSS (r = 0.644, p < 0.01). In general, the water quality in Ambong Bay is within the standard values permitted by the Malaysia Marine Water Quality standard for marine life, fisheries, coral reefs, recreational and mariculture (Class 2), except for NO3-. In conclusion, any mariculture operation to take place in Ambong Bay in the near future should take the temporal variation of the water quality into account. Moreover, effects of toxic phytoplankton to culture fishes should also be taken care and monitored frequently.

Effects of ethanol on antioxidant capacity in isolated rat hepatocytes

AIM： To investigate dose-response and time-course of the effects of ethanol on the cell viability and antioxidant capacity in isolated rat hepatocytes. METHODS： Hepatocytes were isolated from male adult Wistar rats and seeded into 100-mm dishes. Hepatocytes were treated with ethanol at concentrations between 0 （C）, 10 （E10）, 50 （E50）, and 100 （E100） mmol/L （dose response） for 12, 24, and 36 h （time course）. Then, lactate dehydrogenase （LDH） leakage, malondialdehyde （IDA） concentration, glutathione （GSH） level, and activities of glutathione peroxidase （GPX）, glutathione reductase （GRD）, superoxide dismutase （SOD）, and catalase （CAT） were measured. RESULTS： Our data revealed that LDH leakage was significantly increased by about 30% in group E100 over those in groups C and E10 at 24 and 36 h, The HDA concentration in groups C, E10 and E50 were significantly lower than that in group E100 at 36 h. Furthermore, the concentration of IDA in group E100 at 36 h was significantly higher by 4.5- and 1.7-fold, respectively, than that at 12 and 24 h. On the other hand, the GSH level in group E100 at 24 and 36 h was significantly decreased, by 32% and 28%, respectively, compared to that at 12 h. The activities of GRD and CAT in group E100 at 36 h were significantly less than those in groups C and E10. However, The GPX and SOD activities showed no significant change in each group. CONCLUSION： These results suggest that longtime incubation with higher concentration of ethanol （100 mmol/L） decreased the cell viability by means of reducing GRD and CAT activities and increasing.lipid peroxidation.
