Interaction between Biochar and algae on Problem Soil

An in-vitro experiment was conducted to assess the interaction between biochar and algae on a problem soil. Experiments were performed with and without algae to observe the effectiveness of algae for overcoming the challenges posed by problem soils. At the end of incubation periods, the adsorption and desorption of phosphorus (P) on a problem soil vis-á-vis algal inoculation were determined. Our results showed that different types of biochars adsorbed different amounts of P suggesting that the source of biochar played a crucial role in determining its behavior towards P. Tannery waste biochar significantly adsorbed 147% and 35% more P compared to that of the chicken litter and orange peel biochars respectively. Significant reductions in adsorption were observed when the biochar was used in combination with the algae which could be due to the beneficial effects of algae leading to the amelioration of the problem soil. Adsorption was reduced to 34%, 24% and 20% for the orange peel biochar + algae, chicken litter biochar + algae and tannery waste biochar + algae, respectively compared to the corresponding biochars present as a single solid. Phosphorus (P) desorption was also reduced significantly in presence of algal inoculation. Overall our findings suggest that the application of algae along with biochar in the problem soil could reduce the adsorption of P which would influence the availability of P.

Urbanization often exerts multiple effects on aquatic and terrestrial organisms,including changes in biodiversity,species composition and ecosystem functions.However,the impacts of urbanization on river phytoplankton in subtropical urbanizing watersheds remain largely unknown.Here,we explored the effects of urbanization on phytoplankton community structure(i.e.,biomass,community composition and diversity)and function(i.e.,resource use efficiency)in a subtropical river at watershed scale in southeast China over 6 years.A total of 318 phytoplankton species belonging into 120 genera and 7 phyla were identified from 108 samples.Bacillariophyta biomass showed an increasing trend with increasing urbanization level.The phytoplankton community shifted from Chlorophyta dominance in rural upstream waters to Bacillariophyta dominance in urbanized downstream waters.Furthermore,phytoplankton diversity and resource use efficiency(RUE=phytoplankton biomass/total phosphorus)were significantly decreased with increasing urbanization level from upstream to downstream.Phytoplankton RUE exhibited a significant positive correlation with species richness,but a negative correlation with phytoplankton evenness.The variation in environmental factors(turbidity,total nitrogen,NH_(4)^(+)-N,total phosphorus,PO_(4)^(3-)-P and percentage urbanized area)was significantly correlated with phytoplankton diversity and RUE.Overall,our results revealed the influence of urbanization on phytoplankton community structure and ecosystem function was due to its altering the environmental conditions.Therefore,human-driven urbanization may play crucial roles in shaping the structure and function of phytoplankton communities in subtropical rivers,and the mechanism of this process can provide important information for freshwater sustainable uses,watershed management and conservation.

The neuromuscular junction(NMJ)is an essential synaptic structure composed of motor neurons,skeletal muscles,and glial cells that orchestrate the critical process of muscle contraction(Li et al.,2018).The typical NMJ structure is classically described as having a“pretzel-like”shape in mice(Figure 1),whereas human NMJs have a smaller,fragmented structure throughout adulthood.Degenerated NMJs exhibit smaller or fragmented endplates,partial denervation,reduced numbers of synaptic vesicles,abnormal presynaptic mitochondria,and dysfunctional perisynaptic Schwann cells(alhindi et al.,2022).

Nowadays,wireless local area network(WLAN)has become prevalent Internet access due to its low-cost gadgets,flexible coverage and hasslefree simple wireless installation.WLAN facilitates wireless Internet services to users with mobile devices like smart phones,tablets,and laptops through deployment of multiple access points(APs)in a network field.Every AP operates on a frequency band called channel.Popular wireless standard such as IEEE 802.11n has a limited number of channels where frequency spectrum of adjacent channels overlaps partially with each other.In a crowded environment,users may experience poor Internet services due to channel collision i.e.,interference from surrounding APs that affects the performance of the WLAN system.Therefore,it becomes a challenge to maintain expected performance in a crowded environment.A mathematical model of throughput considering interferences from surrounding APs can play an important role to set up a WLAN system properly.While set up,assignment of channels considering interference can maximize network performance.In this paper,we investigate the signal propagation of APs under interference of partially overlapping channels for both bonded and non-bonded channels.Then,a throughput estimation model is proposed using difference of operating channels and received signal strength indicator(RSSI).Then,a channel assignment algorithm is introduced using proposed throughput estimation model.Finally,the efficiency of the proposal is verified by numerical experiments using simulator.The results show that the proposal selects the best channel combination of bonded and non-bonded channels that maximize the performance.

Developing renewable energy technology is an effective way to address the global warming and air pollution problems derived from depleting fossil fuels.Due to the high theoretical capacity(3860 m Ah g-1) and low electrochemical potential of lithium metal anode,lithium metal batteries(LMBs) have attracted tremendous research attention with the scalable application and vigorous deployment of electric vehicles.Unfortunately,the further commercialization of Li metal anode is hindered by the random growth of Li dendrites during the lithium plating/stripping processes,leading to the continuous consumption of active Li and the puncture on the separator.Just recently,Ma’s group proposed a new approach to systematically investigate the relationship between functional groups and Li dendrite generation during the Li plating/stripping processes.The proposed new approach could be of an effective tool to gain new insights into functional groups in the electrolyte additives and Li dendrites formation,highly valuable for the rational structural design of highperformance Li metal electrode materials.

alzheimer’s disease is characterized by the extracellular accumulation of the amyloidβin the form of amyloid plaques and the intracellular deposition of the microtubule-associated protein tau in the form of neurofibrillary tangles.Most of the alzheimer’s drugs targeting amyloidβhave been failed in clinical trials.Particularly,tau pathology connects greatly in the pathogenesis of alzheimer’s disease.Tau protein enhances the stabilization of microtubules that leads to the appropriate function of the neuron.Changes in the quantity or the conformation of tau protein could affect its function as a microtubules stabilizer and some of the processes wherein it is involved.The molecular mechanisms leading to the accumulation of tau are principally signified by numerous posttranslational modifications that change its conformation and structural state.Therefore,aberrant phosphorylation,as well as truncation of tau protein,has come into focus as significant mechanisms that make tau protein in a pathological entity.Furthermore,the shape-shifting nature of tau advocates to comprehend the progression of alzheimer’s disease precisely.In this review,we emphasize the recent studies about the toxic and shape-shifting nature of tau in the pathogenesis of alzheimer’s disease.

Kinetic adsorption of application of carbon nanotubes for Pb(Ⅱ) removal from aqueous solution

The capability of carbon nanotubes （CNTs） to adsorb lead （Pb） in aqueous solution was investigated. Batch mode adsorption experiment was conducted to determine the effects of pH, agitation speed, CNTs dosage and contact time. The removal of Pb（II） reached maximum value 85% or 83% at pH 5 or 40 mg/L of CNTs, respectively. Higher correlation coefficients from Langmuir isotherm model indicates the strong adsorptions of Pb（II） on the surface of CNTs （adsorption capacity Xm = 102.04 mg/g）. The results indicates that the highest percentage removal of Pb （96.03%） can be achieved at pH 5, 40 mg/L of CNTs, contact time 80 min, and agitation speed 50 r/min.

A dual-stage servo system consists of a primary coarse actuator for facilitating large motion and a secondary micro-actuator for small but precise motion to improve tracking performance. Piezoelectric micro-actuator made from lead zirconate titanate(PZT)has been a popular choice for the secondary stage. However, the advantage gained by the resolution of the secondary PZT actuator is reduced by its inherent hysteresis nonlinearity. Model based hysteresis compensation techniques are preferred due to their simplicity and fast response. Identification and modeling are two substantial parts in such model-based techniques. This paper presents a rigorous analysis and modeling of the hysteresis of PZT micro-actuator. Modified Generalized Prandtl-Ishlinskii and Coleman-Hodgdon models are studied. Identification of the model through nonlinear least square and particle swarm optimization are examined and compared. Several analyses are done through tuning of the model parameters and identification techniques.Experimental analysis and simulation results underscore the effectiveness of this modeling approach. Finally as a design example,a dual-stage simulation analysis is done to show the effectiveness of systematic modeling on hysteresis compensation.

An investigation on chloride ingress and macro-cell corrosion of steel bars in concrete made with recycled brick aggregate(RBA)was carried out.As control cases,virgin brick aggregate(BA)and stone aggregate(SA)were also investigated.Both cylindrical and cracked prism specimens were studied for 16 different cases.The prism specimens were made with a segmented steel bar providing electrical connection from outside of the specimens to measure macro-cell corrosion current continuously under seawater splash exposure for a period of 30 d using a data logger.Cylindrical specimens were submerged in 3%NaCl solution at a temperature of 40℃ to investigate chloride ingress in concrete made with RBA,BA,and SA after 120 and 180 d.Half-cell potential,corrosion area,and depths of corrosion were also investigated.The chloride ingress as well as corrosion of steel bars in concrete made with the different types of aggregate is ordered as RBA>BA>SA.
