Syzygium campanulatum Korth is a plant, which is a rich source of secondary metabolites （especially flavanones, chalcone, and triterpenoids）. In our present study, three conventional solvent extraction （CSE） techniques and supercritical fluid extraction （SFE） techniques were performed to achieve a maximum recovery of two flavanones, chalcone, and two triterpenoids from S. campanulatum leaves. Furthermore, a Box-Behnken design was constructed for the SFE technique using pressure, temperature, and particle size as independent variables, and yields of crude extract, individual and total secondary metabolites as the dependent variables. In the CSE procedure, twenty extracts were produced using ten different solvents and three techniques （maceration, soxhletion, and reflux）. An enriched extract of five secondary metabolites was collected using n-hexane：methanol （1：1） soxhletion. Using food-grade ethanol as a modifier, the SFE methods produced a higher recovery （25.5%-84.9%） of selected secondary metabo- lites as compared to the CSE techniques （0.92%-66.00%）.

The aim of the present study was to check the antimicrobial potential of eleven different aqueous leaf extracts on Xanthomonas campestris, Agrobacterium rhizogenes and Aspergillus fumigatus based on formation of the zone of inhibition (ZOI). Prosopis juliflora showed maximum and significant inhibitory effect on the growth of all the three pathogens. In case of Xanthomonas campestris the effect of this plant extract was almost equal to the strength of Streptomycin 10 mcg, (the metric system uses the term mcg to represent micrograms). Aqueous extracts of some plants formed low zone of inhibition. While some plant extracts were comparatively more effective against all the three pathogens (Xanthomonas campestris, Agrobacterium rhizogenes and Aspergillus fumigatus).

Persistent organic pollutants （POPs） persisting in the environment, which accumulate in human and animal tissue and bio-magnify in food-chains, would have significant impacts on human health and the environment. Thus, the present study was designed to investigate the accumulation of organic pollutants in prawn from streams of Sialkot, Pakistan. Fresh water prawn Macrobrachium lamarrei was captured from streams of study area. Samples were prepared for extraction of selected organic pollutants and then analyzed through gas chromatograph-electron capture detector （GC-ECD）. Results of current study showed that five pesticide residues, i.e., B-HCH, Lindane, DDD, 2, 4-DDT and 4, 4-DDT were detected in composite prawn sample. The rest of POPs residues were not found in prawn. The ratio of a-HCH/γ-HCH indicated an input of technical HCH and long range transport, while the ratio of DDT/（DDD ＋ DDE） showed recent use of DDT to the study area. The high values of TEC-HQ and PEC-HQ of POPs in the studied prawn samples depicted risk posed to health.

Efficient Removal of Reactive Orange 107 Dye from Aqueous Media by Shrimp Shell Derived Chitosan Functionalized Magnetic Nanoparticles

In present work chitosan functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (CMNPs) were successfully prepared and investigated for the removal of Reactive Orange 107 dye (RO 107) from water. The chitosan was extracted from shrimp shells (Penaeus merguiensis) and was characterized by solubility test and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Degree of deacetylation of chitosan was examined by 1H-NMR and potentiometric titration method. Thereafter, the chitosan was used for synthesis of CMNPs. The synthesized CMNPs were characterized by FTIR, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Effects of various variables such as contact time, pH, stirring speed, adsorbent dosage, temperature, and concentration of electrolyte on extraction efficiency were evaluated. Freundlich isotherm model fits better that shows the removal of RO 107 with CMNPs by multilayer adsorption behaviour. Furthermore, kinetic study showed that adsorption process followed pseudo-second order kinetic model regulated by chemisorption. Thermodynamic analysis explained that adsorption of RO 107 onto CMNPs was endothermic as well as spontaneous. The developed CNMPs were applied to environmental remediation of spiked RO 107 treated waste water samples with 96.20% removal potential, hence, offered an effective sorbent for removal of RO 107 contaminated water samples.

Summary：A multi-centred study was designed to collect dengue epidemiologic data from government and registered private hospitals/clinics and maintained archive of frozen specimens in bio-bank to be used for future dengue epidemic control program, and assess the epidemiology of dengue fever（DF） by evaluating biochemical and oxidative status of patients. ELISA Ig M antibodies test was done to confirm DF. From August 2010 to December 2011, 101 confirmed blood samples of DF patients referred to pathology lab of Jinnah Hospital Lahore were subjected to the epidemiologic assessment by evaluating the biochemical and physiological indices and alterations of circulating antioxidants. Clinical features of DF patients and effect of fever on blood components and serum proteins of liver were recorded. The hospital stay in DF, dengue hemorrhagic fever（DHF） and dengue shock syndrome（DSS） showed significant difference. Significant increases in serum alanine amino transferase（ALT）（P=0.000）, aspartate amino transferase（AST）（P=0.000）, alkaline phosphatase（ALP）（P=0.000）, malondialdehyde（MDA） along with significant decreases in total protein（TP）（P=0.000）, reduced glutathione（GSH）（P=0.000）, superoxide dismutase（SOD）, catalase（CAT）（P=0.000）, and sialic acid contents（P=0.016） were observed. A positive correlation existed between bound sialic acid levels, liver enzymes and circulating antioxidants（r=0.656, P=0.016）. In the present study, alterations of circulating antioxidants in DF suggest that DF might be a metabolic response to an acute, self-limiting tropical viral infection, and a consequence of the viral inflammatory process.

Antioxidant and antiangiogenic activities of the essential oils of Myristica fragrans and Morinda citrifolia

Objective:Toinvestigate the anti-angiogenic activity and antioxidant properties of Myristica fragrans（***）（nutmeg） and Morinda citrifolia（***）（mengkudu） oils. Methods:The nutmeg and megkudu essential oils were obtained by steam distillation. The antioxidant activities of both essenlial oils were delermined by beta-carotene/ linoleic acid bleaching assay and reducing power while the anti-angiogenic activity was investigated using rat aortic ring assay using various ***:The results showed that nutmeg oil has higher antioxidant activity than mengkudu *** nutmeg oil effectively inhibited the oxidation of linoleic acid with（88.68±0.1）%while the inhibition percentage of oxidation of linoleic acid of the mengkudu oil is（69.44±0.4）%.The nutmeg oil and mengkudu oil showed reducing power with an EC50 value of 181.4μg/mL and 3 043.0μg/mL,*** anliangiogenic activity of nutmeg oil showed significant antiangiogenic activity with IC50 of 77.64μg/mL comparing to mengkudu oil which exhibits IC50 of 109.30μg/***:Bioactive compound（s） will be isolated from the nutmeg essential oil to be developed as antiangiogenic drugs.

Transcription factors play key roles in plant development and stress responses through their interaction with cis-elements and/or other transcription factors. Homeodomain associated leucine zipper proteins (HD-Zip) constitute a family of transcription factors that are characterized by the presence of a DNA-binding domain closely linked with leucine zipper motif functioning in dimer formation. This type of association is unique to plants and considered as an excellent candidate to activate developmental responses to altering environmental conditions. Cotton is the most important fiber plant with a lot of local and commercial uses in the world. HD-Zip proteins not only have key roles in different stages of vascular and inter-fascicular fiber differentiation of cotton but also are suggested to have an important role against abiotic stress that is one of the key factors limiting cotton productivity. Plants have developed various strategies to manage stress conditions through a combination of metabolic, physiological and morphological adaptations. These adaptive changes rely largely on alterations in gene expression. Therefore, transcriptional regulators play a crucial role in stress tolerance. Being a transcription factor HD-Zip might be a useful target for genetic engineering to generate multiple stress tolerance in susceptible plants. In the following chapter, we discussed how the HD-Zip proteins would play a useful role for cotton development both in fiber production and stress adaptation.

Characteristic of Ionospheric foF2 and Solar Indices during the 23rd Solar Cycle over High Latitude Station, Syowa, Antarctica

The behavior and dynamics of ionosphere are completely dependent on the solar activity. We have investigated the long term variability of ionospheric parameter foF2 with corresponding changes in the solar activity during the 23rd solar cycle. The variation of the critical frequency of ionospheric foF2 at Syowa Station Antarctica, (69°S, 39°E) is examined with four different solar activity indices characterizing the long term variability of solar activity wise Flare Index, relative sunspot number (Rz), solar flux F10.7 cm and CME occurrence index. We compared the dependency of foF2 and other solar activity indices on each other by using linear correlation investigation, and showed the qualitative similarity of the ionospheric foF2 with the solar indices. We notice that hysteresis of foF2 is lower for the growing branches of the solar cycle. The individual dissimilarity of critical frequency foF2 demonstrated the dependency on the solar cycle but this variation was different during the months, which depended on solar activity and polar ionospheric behavior. The peak to peak variation between monthly average of critical frequency foF2 and solar indices parameter is evidence for the absolute dependency for each other. The linear correlation between the solar indices and foF2 is very strong during the climbing and downward branches of the solar cycle. However the incline of their linear fits shows variations from index to index.
