Antimicrobial activity of water and acetone extracts of some Eucomis taxa

Objective: To evaluate the antibacterial and antifungal properties of acetone and water extracts of selected Eucomis ***: The bulbs of Eucomis bicolor, Eucomis comosa(E. comosa) and E. comosa cv. were dried and examples from each experimental treatment were ground separately into powder. Each sample was divided into two groups with equal amounts of powder,and respectively extracted with water and a 70% solution of aqueous acetone. The crude water extracts were then filtered through a 0.2 mm filter. The 70% aqueous acetone extracts were next concentrated at 40C. After the evaporation of the acetone, the samples were additionally filtered through a 0.2 mm filter. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of the extracts against chosen microorganisms were then ***: The results of the study demonstrated that the water and acetone extracts of Eucomis bulbs have an influence on the viability of Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus atrophaeus strains. In the case of mediums containing E. comosa and E. comosa ***, a decrease in the number of gram-positive bacteria was dependent on the extract concentration. The best results were obtained in the case of the 25% extracts. The water and acetone extracts of Eucomis bulbs did not cause a decrease in the number of Escherichia coli cells. Additionally, antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger, Botrytis cinerea, Stachybotrys chartarum, mucor circinelloides and Rhizopus oryzae cells were also not ***: The tested gram-negative and fungi microorganisms show resistance towards acetone and water extracts of Eucomis bulbs. The highest activity is found in the case of Aspergillus clavatus, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus atrophaeus strains,which shows water and acetone extracts of 25%.

AIm:To assess the incidence of mitral valve prolapse in patients with newly diagnosed primary open angle ***:The study included 12 patients without any other comorbidities or taking any general or local *** patient underwent a full ophthalmological examination with visual field assessment and optical computed tomography of the macula and optic nerve *** Doppler ultrasound was performed to exclude impaired blood flow in this region and transthoracic echocardiography with assessment of the function and morphology of the heart ***:In the study group,mitral valve prolapse was found in seven patients(58.3%),while mitral valve regurgitation in 11 patients(91.7%).One case of normal pressure glaucoma and four cases of juvenile glaucoma were *** were also other risk factors for glaucoma:myopia(58.3%),migraine headaches(41.7%),a positive family history of glaucoma(16.7%).CONCLUSION:mitral valve prolapse could be indicated as a new risk factor for *** seems reasonable to conduct screening tests for glaucoma in patients with mitral valve prolapse in the course of echocardiography.

In this paper, the results of the investigation of the morphology and phase composition of the oxide layers formed on the surface of the 1H18N9T acid proof steel foil by confocal Raman micro-spectroscopy with optical microscopy, SEm, XRD and TEm-EDS-SADP are presented. The foil oxidation was performed by thermo-programmed heating up to 823, 1023 or 1113 K and next annealing at the final temperatures in the air flow for 48 h, 4 h and 4 h, respectively. The great advantages of the use of the Raman spectroscopy for the phase determining in the oxide layers on the acid proof steel foil are shown. moreover the possibility of applying the optical microscopy for investigation of the surface morphology of both the initial steel foil and the oxide layers is pointed out.

Kidney tissue is particularly susceptible to reactive oxygen species attack which leads to development of cancer. During oxidative stress, membrane lipids and proteins are major targets of re-active oxygen species (ROS). This work is focused on changes of phospholipids, proteins content and electric charge that occur in cell membranes of kidney cancer of pT3 stage, grade G3 and with metastasis. Qualitative and quantitative phospholipid composition and the presence of integral membrane proteins were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. Electrophoresis was used to determine the surface charge density of the human kidney cell membrane. It was shown that the process of cancer transformation was accompanied by an increase phospholipid levels and altered the level of integral proteins as determined by decrease phenylalanine, tyrosine, cysteine and arginine. moreover, the process of cancer transformation significantly enhanced changes in the surface charge density of the human kidney cell membrane. Cell membrane structure and function are modified by neoplasm lesion.

The levels of fluoride airborne particulates emitted from welding processes were investigated. They were sampled with the patented IOm Sampler, developed by J. H Vincent and D. mark at the Institute of Occupational medicine（IOm）, personal inhalable sampler for simultaneous collection of the inhalable and respirable size fractions. Ion chromatography with conductometric detection was used for quantitative analysis. The efficiency of fluoride extraction from the cellulose filter of the IOm sampler was examined using the standard sample of urban air particle matter SRm-1648 a. The best results for extraction were obtained when water and the anionic surfactant N-Cetyl-N-N-Ntrimethylammonium bromide（CTAB） were used in an ultrasonic bath. The limits of detection and quantification for the whole procedure were 8 μg/L and 24 μg/L, respectively The linear range of calibration was 0.01–10 mg/L, which corresponds to 0.0001–0.1 mg of fluorides per m3 in collection of a 20 L air sample. The concentration of fluorides in the respirable fraction of collected air samples was in the range of 0.20–1.82 mg/m3, while the inhalable fraction contained 0.23–1.96 mg/m3 of fluorides during an eight-hour working day in the welding room.

Elastomeric polyurethanes were prepared from a reference polyurethane system modified with biobased polyols synthesized using rapeseed or palm *** reference material was modified by replacement of the commercial polyol by 10%of biopolyols and also by addition of sisal fibers up to 5 wt%.The higher functionality of the biopolyols increased the crosslinking density of the networks and this was reflected by an increase in hardness and a decrease in water *** effect of the sisal fibers mainly improved the mechanical and thermomechanical properties of the system with rapeseed oil because of good dispersion and strong fiber-matrix *** system containing palm oil polyol corresponded to an initial formulation of high viscosity and,consequently,the resulting composites presented lower densities than the theoretically expected *** results are associated with fiber dispersion problems in the initial reactive mixture.

Systemic interleukin-9 in inflammatory bowel disease: Association with mucosal healing in ulcerative colitis

To evaluate circulating IL9 in inflammatory bowel disease and disease-associated anemia/cachexia and assess its potential as a mucosal healing *** IL9 as well as other cytokines (IL1β, IL6, IL13, IFNγ, TNFα, and VEGF-A) were determined in 293 individuals: 97 patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) and 74 with ulcerative colitis (UC) and in 122 apparently healthy controls. The clinical activity of CD and UC was expressed in terms of the Crohn’s Disease Activity Index (CDAI) and the mayo Scoring System (mDAI), respectively, and the severity of bowel inflammation in UC patients was assessed using mayo endoscopic score. Cytokine concentrations were measured by a flow cytometry-based method using Luminex xmAP® technology. High-sensitive C-reactive protein concentrations (hsCRP) were determined in CD and UC patients using the enhanced immunoturbidimetric *** IL9 was significantly lower in healthy individuals [9 pg/mL (95%CI: 8.2-10)] than in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD): both inactive [14.3 pg/mL (11.9-19.9)] and active [27.6 pg/mL (24.5-32), P mL (23.4-32.2)] and in active UC [32.7 pg/mL (27-38.9)] compared to inactive diseases [15.9 pg/mL (10.8-23.4) in CD and 19.4 pg/mL (13.9-27.1) in UC, P = 0.001]. IL9 correlated weakly with CDAI (ρ = 0.32, P = 0.003) and mDAI (ρ = 0.35, P = 0.002) and strongly with endoscopic inflammation in UC (ρ = 0.74, P marker of mucosal healing (mH), IL9 had an accuracy superior to hsCRP and IL6 [97% (P mL (24.4-37.5) vs 21.88 pg/mL (18-26.5), P = 0.026] and negatively correlated with hemoglobin concentrations (ρ = -0.27, P multiple regression showed IL1β and IL13 to be the independent predictors of circulating IL9 in healthy individuals, IFNγ

The spores of Cladosporium Link. are often present in the air in high quantities and produce many allergenic proteins, which may lead to asthma. An aerobiological spore monitoring program can inform patients about the current spore concentration in air and help their physicians determine the spore dose that is harmful for a given individual. This makes it possible to develop optimized responses and propose personalized therapy for a particular sensitive patient. The aim of this study was to assess the extent of the human health hazard posed by the fungal genus Cladosporium. For the first time, we have determined the number of days on which air samples in Poland exceeded the concentrations linked to allergic responses of sensitive patients, according to thresholds established by three different groups（2800/3000/4000 spores per 1 m^3 of the air）. The survey was conducted over three consecutive growing seasons（April–September, 2010–2012） in three cities located in different climate zones of Poland（Poznan, Lublin and Rzeszow）. The average number of days exceeding 2800 spores per cubic meter（the lowest threshold） ranged from 61（2010） through 76（2011） to 93（2012）, though there was significant variation between cities. In each year the highest concentration of spores in the air was detected in either Poznan or Lublin, both located on large plains with intensive agriculture. We have proposed that an effective, science-based software platform to support policy-making on air quality should incorporate biological air pollutant data,such as allergenic fungal spores and pollen grains.
