The study of multiphase flow consisting of liquid and air bubbles has been attracting the interest of many researchers. Numerical methods for such a system are, however, facing difficulty in numerical accuracy and a heavy computational load. In this paper, we made corrections to the modified force-coupling method in our previous papers and applied it to the numerical studies of a single air bubble rising near a vertical wall and two interacting air bubbles rising in line in quiescent liquid. Corrections were made to the effective ranges of the force-coupling method. The calculation results showed that the lift force acting on an air bubble obtained by the experimental data was more accurately reproduced than those by our previous method. We accurately calculated the time evolution of the velocities of interacting two air bubbles rising in line obtained in the previous experiments and resolved the physical mechanism of the relative movement of two bubbles. We also found the present method is much quicker and needs much smaller memory capacity than other methods, such as the volume of fluid method.

Differences in Physical and Psychological Condition, Sleeping Status and Menstruation-Related Symptoms before and after Smartphones Use in Young Female Students in Japan

Smartphones use for a long period of time can cause health problems including physical condition, psychological condition and sleeping status. In addition, smartphones use may affect menstruation related symptoms. This study was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire between June and November in 2016 to clarify the differences in physical and psychological condition, sleeping status and menstruation-related symptoms before and after starting to use smartphones in female university students in Japan. We recruited 273 female nursing students and the response rate was 95.2%. We found significant changes after starting to use smartphones regarding eyestrain (p < 0.001), posture (p = 0.002), stiffness of neck, back and shoulders (p < 0.001), level of outdoor activity (p < 0.001), difficulty concentrating (p < 0.001), lack of motivation (p < 0.001), and sensitivity to stress (p = 0.005). Moreover, we also found that fatigue before menstruation and headache/low back pain during menstruation were higher after starting to use smartphones. The proportions of students with irritability and depressive feeling as emotional premenstrual symptoms appeared higher after starting to use smartphones. These results imply that young women should refrain from using smartphones if they have visual display terminal-related symptoms, disturbance of sleep pattern and menstruation-related symptoms before and during menstruation.

Background: Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-β1) are modulated in variety cancers including Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, there is a paucity of data concerning their role in the pathologic process of recurrence of HCC following hepatectomy. We herein assessed the role of the hepatic expression of COX-2 and TGF-β as predictors for patients with early recurrence within 2 years of HCC diagnosis. Methods: Sixty patients with HCC who underwent curative hepatectomy between 2000 and 2003 were entered in the present study. The immunoreactivity and distribution patterns of COX-2 and TGF-β1 were examined in both the HCC and the adjacent nonHCC tissues of the liver. Risk factors of tumor recurrence within 2 years, including COX-2 and TGF-β1 expression, were investigated by univariate and multivariate analyses. Results: Among 60 patients, 31 patients had early recurrences within 2 years and 14 patients recurred after 2 years following surgery. Patients with low COX-2 expression in the HCC tissues and adjacent nonHCC tissues had favorable disease-free survival (p = 0.002 and p β1 expression in the nonHCC tissues had also longer disease-free survival (p = 0.045). Based on the expression patterns of COX-2 and TGF-β1, patients with low COX-2 and positive TGF-β1 expression in the nonHCC tissues had favorable overall and disease-free survival (p β1 signaling in nontumor tissues suggested high risk of recurrence and poor survival to the HCC patients following hepatectomy.

In developing the new friction welding technology, the thermal elastic-plastic stress analysis by the finite element method was carried out to seek the suitable welding conditions such as the friction pressure, the friction speed and the upset pressure. The results obtained are as follows： Heat transfer to the specimens and the intermediate material during friction process was made clear; The operational conditions such as the rotation number of the intermediate material and the friction pressure to reach the liquidus in the interface could be estimated; Further, as the overhang length near the interface is well related to the joint efficiency, we tried to obtain the operational conditions by numerical analysis to acquire a certain length of the overhang length near the interface.

For the purpose of improving the defects of the conventional friction welding method, the new friction welding technology has been examined. That is, the aim of the study is producing the joint of dissimilar materials evaluated to be difficult for friction welding and non-round shape joints. In this process, after the intermediate material generates the independent friction heat on every side of the specimens, it is removed instantaneously and upset process begins to weld the specimens for a joint. In this study, similar joint of A2017 aluminum alloy and one of S45C steel were examined. On the other hand, thermal elastic-plastic stress analysis by the finite element method was carried out using ANSYS mechanical.

Predictor Analysis of Mid-Term Left Atrial Reverse Remodeling after Mitral Valve Surgery

Objective: The aim of this study was to predict mid-term left atrial reverse remodeling after mitral valve surgery. Patients and Methods: Echocardiographic data was obtained preoperatively and at follow-up from 105 patients who underwent mitral valve surgery. Left atrial volume (LAV) was decreased by >30% from baseline in 43 patients (group A), but not in 62 patients (group B). Results: Patients in group A were younger (p = 0.0029). Male was more (p = 0.05) and prosthesis size was bigger in group A (p = 0.005). Only age was a predictor of left atrial reverse remodeling in a logistic regression model (OR = 0.93, 95% CI 0.88 - 0.99;p = 0.03). Late mean trans-mitral pressure gradient was lower in group A than in group B (p = 0.01). There was a weak correlation between the change in left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVDd) and LAV (correlation coefficient 0.27, 95% CI 0.07 - 0.45;p = 0.008). Survival and freedom from major adverse cardiac events did not differ between the groups (p = 0.31 and p = 0.87 by log-rank test). Conclusions: Age was the only predictor of left atrial reverse remodeling. There was a weak correlation between changes in LVDd and LAV.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common malignant disease and the severe nature of cases in men and women who develop colorectal cancer makes this an important socio-economic health issue. Major challenges such as understanding and modeling colorectal cancer pathways rely on our understanding of simple models such as outlined in this paper. We discuss that the development of novel standardized approaches of multidimensional (correlative) biomolecular microscopy methods facilitates the collection of (sub) cellular tissue information in the early onset of colorectal liver metastasis and that this approach will be crucial in designing new effective strategies for CRC treatment. The application of X-ray micro-computed tomography and its potential in correlative imaging of the liver vasculature will be discussed.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a method for quantifying the extent of renal dysfunction due to drug-induced nephrotoxicity using dynamic contrast-enhanced computed tomography (DCE-CT) and to investigate the protective effects of various antioxidant agents against cis-dichlorodiammineplatinum (cisplatin)-induced nephrotoxicity in rats using this method. Materials and Methods: The DCE-CT studies were performed in 8-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats. The CT scanning started 4 s before a bolus intravenous injection of iodinated contrast agent (CA) (150 mgI/kg) from the tail vein using an automatic injector and lasted 90 s at 1-s intervals. The contrast clearance per unit renal volume (K1) was estimated from the DCE-CT data using the Patlak model. The renal volume (V) was calculated by manually delineating the kidney on the CT image. The contrast clearance of the entire kid-ney (K) was obtained by . First, to investigate the effect of CA itself, the DCE-CT studies were performed without injecting cisplatin 2, 4, and 7 days after the first DCE-CT study on day 0. Second, to investigate the effect of injected dose of cisplatin, the DCE-CT study was performed after the intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of cisplatin (1.8 mg/kg) and was repeated every other day for one week. Finally, to investigate the protective effects of antioxidant agents [L-arginine (300 mg/kg), N-acetylcysteine (500 or 1000 mg/kg), methimazole (40 mg/kg), captopril (60 mg/kg), and taurine (750 mg/kg)], the DCE-CT studies were performed on days 0, 2, 4, and 7 after the i.p. injection of cisplatin (3.6 mg/kg). For comparison, the DCE-CT data were also acquired without injecting the antioxidant agents (CDDP group). Results: When cisplatin was not injected, there were no significant changes in the K value as compared to that on day 0 within the studied period.
