Objective: To examine the correlation between plasma hCG results obtained with the new i-STAT® hCG point of care test with those concomitantly obtained from the central hospital laboratory utilizing the same patient samples. Methods: Prospective cross-sectional laboratory test evaluation. We compared plasma hCG results obtained with the i-STAT® hCG test (Abbott Point of Care, Princeton, NJ, USA) with Architect Ci8200 (Abbott Laboratories, Abbott Park, IL, USA). We also calculated the total coefficient of variation (CV) for the i-STAT® method. Results: The two methods showed a good linear correlation (R2 = 0.994;slope 1.03) and CV for the i-STAT® method was 2.1% - 5.2%. Conclusion: We suggest that the i-STAT® hCG blood assay could be used as a complement to urine hCG assays in clinical situations when rapid test results are needed and urine is not available.

Micronutrients deficiency is a major limiting factor for increasing yield and productivity of major crops in India. Recent findings of multiple micronutrients interactions have evidenced the indispensable role played by micronutrients in plant nutrition. Though they are needed in smaller quantities, however, their availability in the Right amount, at the Right time, and for the Right crop has been a major limiting factor for improving the productivity and yield of Sugarcane in northern Karnataka state of India. This study was conducted to assess the level of Boron (B), Copper (Cu), Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn) and Zinc (Zn) deficiencies in Sugarcane growing Vertisols of six micro-watersheds in northern Karnataka. The six selected micro-watersheds were intensively traversed and six representative pedons of standard dimensions were dug and horizon-wise soil samples collected and analyzed for various micronutrients using standard analytical procedures. Based on the optimum critical levels of micronutrients, B, Fe and Zn were deficient, ranging from 0.15 - 0.64, 1.23 - 5.92 and 0.11 - 0.64 mg⋅kg−1 respectively while Cu and Mn were in excess, ranging from 1.54 - 7.62 and 1.22 - 7.03 mg⋅kg−1 respectively. The distribution of B, Fe and Zn were inversely proportional to soil depth whereas that of Cu and Mn were irregular, which is an indication of the influence of pedoturbation in these soils. With the current rate of agricultural intensification, unbalanced fertilizer application, depletion of nutrients and no replenishment by smallholders, the results reveal that the current deficiency levels may increase further if appropriate and timely actions are not taken. We therefore recommend the use of site-specific nutrient management, balanced fertilizer application and good agronomic practices. These can enhance nutrient use efficiency in the study area.

The Complication Rate after Hypospadias Repair and Correlated Preoperative Symptoms

Aim: To assess the rate of complications following hypospadias repair in a consecutive series of boys and the correlations of those complications with their preoperative symptoms, degree of hypospadias and method of operation. This study was conducted to address the question of whether all boys with all degrees of hypospadias should undergo reconstruction. Methods: This was a prospective cohort study. We included every boy who underwent an operation for the primary repair of hypospadias between January 2011 and April 2014. The median follow-up time was 24 months. The study ended in October 2014. The main outcome measurements were the frequency of postoperative complications and their correlations with the degree of hypospadias, the preoperative symptoms and the operative intervention performed. Results: Among the 76 boys who underwent operations, 23 had degree 1, 47 had degree 2, and 6 had degree 3 hypospadias. Preoperatively, 43 of the boys had symptoms that motivated the operation, including stenosis (38), a curvature (10) or both (5). Forty-three boys underwent operations with the MAVIS technique, 28 underwent TIP repair, 1 underwent a Duckett procedure, and 4 underwent Byar two-stage procedures. There were complications requiring reoperations including fistulas or ruptures in 26 (34%) boys. There were no significant differences in the rates of complications with surgery, fistulas (P = 0.4775), ruptures (P = 0.2417) or other complications (P = 0.5165) between the groups with or without preoperative symptoms, those with different degrees of hypospadias or those who underwent different operative methods for repair. Conclusions: The complication rate in this series was high. The study was prospective, and no boy was lost during follow-up. Because the complication rate did not correlate with the degree of hypospadias nor the preoperative symptoms, there may be a group of boys with hypospadias without symptoms for whose operations are questionable. Background: The White-browed Shortwing(Brachypteryx montana) is widespread from the central Himalayas to the southeast Chinese mainland and the island of Taiwan, the Philippines and Indonesia. Multiple subspecies are recognised, and several of these have recently been suggested to be treated as separate species based on differences in morphology and ***: We here analyse plumage, morphometrics, songs, two mitochondrial and two nuclear markers, and geographical distributions of the two mainland Asian taxa B. m. cruralis and B. m. sinensis and the Taiwan Residents B. m. ***: We conclude that these differ congruently in morphology, songs and DNA. Male B. m. goodfellowi is the most divergent in plumage(sexually monomorphic, unlike the two others; male similar to female), and B. m. cruralis and B. m. sinensis differ in male plumage maturation. The song of B. m. cruralis is strongly divergent from the others, whereas the songs of B. m. sinensis and B. m. goodfellowi are more similar to each other. Brachypteryx m. sinensis and B. m. goodfellowi are sisters, with an estimated divergence time 4.1 million years ago(mya; 95% highest posterior distribution [HPD] 2.8–5.5 mya), and B. m. cruralis separated from these two 5.8 mya(95% HPD 4.1–7.5 mya). We also report notable range extensions of B. m. sinensis as well as sympatry between this taxon and B. m. cruralis in Sichuan Province, China. Brachypteryx m. montana from Java is found to be more closely related to Lesser Shortwing(B. leucophris) and Rusty-bellied Shortwing(B. hyperythra) than to the mainland Asian and Taiwan Residents ***: Our data support a recent proposal to treat the three mainland Asian and Taiwan Residents taxa as three species, separate from B. montana sensu stricto: B. cruralis(central Himalayas to south central China and south Vietnam), B. sinensis(north central to southeastern part of China's Mainland) and B. goodfellowi(Taiwan Island).

AIM: To identify therapeutic agents for the prophylaxis of gastrointestinal anastomotic leakage(AL) under complicated conditions. METHODS: The Pub Med and EMBASE databases were searched for English articles published between January 1975 and September 2014. Studies with the primary purpose of improving anastomotic healing in the colon or rectum under complicated preoperative and/or intraoperative conditions were included. We excluded studies investigating the adverse effects or risk assessment of an active intervention. Furthermore, investigations of biophysical materials, sealants, electrical stimulation and nutrients were excluded. The primary study outcome was biomechanical anastomotic strength or AL. The meta-analysis focused on therapeutic agents that were investigated in one animal model using the same outcome by at least three independent research groups. RESULTS: The 65 studies included were divided into 7 different complicated animal models: Bowel ischemia, ischemia/reperfusion, bowel obstruction, obstructive jaundice, peritonitis, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In total, 48 different therapeutic compounds were examined. The majority of investigated agents(65%) were reported as beneficial for anastomotic healing. Twelve of the agents(25%) were tested more than once in the same model, whereas 13(27%) of the agents were tested in two or more models of complicated healing. Two therapeutic agents met our inclusion criteria for the meta-analysis. Postoperative hyperbaric oxygen therapy significantly increased anastomoticbursting pressure in ischemic colon anastomoses by a mean of 28 mm Hg(95%CI: 17 to 39 mm Hg, P < 0.00001). Granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor failed to show a significant increase in anastomotic bursting pressure(95%CI:-20 to 21 mmH g, P = 0.97) vs controls in experimental chemotherapeutic models. CONCLUSION: This systematic review identified potential therapeutic agents, but more studies are needed before concluding that any of the

Establishing mixed stands by stimulating natural in combination with planting could potentially ensure adequate stocking and meet shifting demands for forest products. Two long-term experiments were separately established in former Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst) stands in southern Sweden to be able to evaluate mixed forest establishment and management. The treatment plots were treated with different intensity of soil scarification (disc trenching, soil inversion and control) to test effects of soil disturbance on regeneration success. Five years later, both experiments were used for a first evaluation, where seedlings of all naturally regenerated tree species were counted together with estimates of the cover and height of other vegetation. This was made in sample plots in symmetric grids. Testing the effects of scarification and distance to seed source on natural regeneration of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.) and downy birch (B. pubescens Ehrh.) showed that both scarification type and degree of soil disturbance significantly affected seedling counts but only if seed sources were close. In conclusion, conventional management practices for regenerating coniferous forest may be suitable for establishing mixed forest stands with combinations of planted and naturally regenerated seedlings.

地球上的稀土元素并不罕见,但由于主要用于半导体、电子元器件、合金、特殊材料等,长期以来被认为是一种战略性矿产资源,各国对于稀土资源的供需变化和价格波动极为敏感。本文从中国稀土资源发现谈起,首先系统梳理了稀土元素的发现历史、名称由来等基本内容,接着从化学特性、主要用途、资源需求等方面对稀土资源进行了需求分析,又从资源储量、资源潜力、开采生产、主要企业和项目、替代品和回收利用等方面分析了稀土资源的供应情况,最后分析了稀土价格波动和地缘政治影响因素,并提出了未来稀土资源的发展展望。通过分析,本文认为人们对稀土供应的担忧被过分高估,从绝对量的角度看,稀土资源并不稀有,而且重要性有限,未来稀土的供应保障不存在问题。本文特别指出,人们对中国稀土政策导致供应短缺的忧虑,更多是对中国迅速扩大的地缘政治影响抱有疑虑,而非真的是稀土供应短缺所致,稀土为他们提供了一个指责中国的机会。
