AIM:To identify blood donors with occult hepatitis B virus(HBV) infection(OBI) to promote safe blood ***:Descriptive cross sectional study was conducted on 3167 blood donors negative for hepatitis B surface antigen(HBsAg),hepatitis C antibody(HCV Ab) and human immunodeficiency virus *** were subjected to the detection of alanine aminotransferase(ALT) and aspartate transaminase(AST) and screening for anti-HBV core antibodies(total) by two different techniques;[Monoliza antibodies to hepatitis B core(Anti-HBc) Plus-Bio-Rad] and(ARC-HBc total-ABBOT).Positive samples were subjected to quantitative detection of antibodies to hepatitis B surface(anti-HBs)(ETI-AB-AUK-3,Dia Sorin-Italy).Serum anti-HBs titers > 10 IU/L was considered *** HBV DNA by real time polymerase chain reaction(PCR)(QIAGEN-Germany) with 3.8 IU/mL detection limit was estimated for blood units with negative serum anti-HBs and also for 32 whose anti-HBs serum titers were > 1000 IU/***,265 recipients were included,34 of whom were followed up for 3-6 *** were investigated for ALT and AST,HBV serological markers:HBsAg(ETI-MAK-4,Dia Sorin-Italy),anti-HBc,quantitative detection of anti-HBs and ***:525/3167(16.6%) of blood units were positive for total anti-HBc,64% of those were antiHBs *** by ARCHITECT anti-HBc assay were carried out for 498/525 anti-HBc positive samples,where 451(90.6%) confirmed *** for anti-HBc was considered confirmed only if two positive results were obtained for each sample,giving an overall prevalence of 451/3167(14.2%) for total *** DNA was quantified by real time PCR in 52/303(17.2%) of anti-HBc positive blood donors(viral load range:5 to 3.5 x 105 IU/mL) with a median of 200 IU/mL(mean:1.8 x 104 ± 5.1 x 104 IU/mL).AntiHBc was the only marker in 68.6% of *** and multivariate logistic analysis for identifying risk factors associated with anti-HBc and HBV-DNA positivity a

Aim: Liver disease is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among Egyptians. The major cause is infection with HCV, with 70 000 up to 140 000 newly reported cases annually. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of anti-HCV antibodies among household contacts of HCV index cases and to identify the possible risk factors of transmission of HCV among Egyptian families. Material and Methods: The present external pilot study (double centre study) was performed on a convenient sample of 125 index cases and their 321 household family contacts recruited from Mansoura & Cairo University where 2 questionnaires were used to collect data from the index & their related contacts. The all were exposed to clinical examinations, routine laboratory testing & screening for the prevalence of Anti-HCV antibodies. Results: The prevalence of anti-HCV seropositivity among household contacts of index cases was found to be 13.7% which husbands of female index cases ranked first followed by wives of male index cases (36.36% versus 17.86% respectively,

Estimates of the Prevalence of Tobacco Smoking in Egypt

The use of tobacco products constitutes the leading cause of preventable deaths in the world. In Egypt, data on the national prevalence of cigarette and waterpipe smoking are lacking, yet such data are vital to tobacco control efforts. We designed and implemented a sampling method to generate population-based prevalence estimates for tobacco smoking in Egypt. In 2005, a total of 3369 adults ages 18 and above, including 1867 females and 1502 males, participated in the survey. Among males, the national prevalence of former cigarette smoking was 18.1%, and 27.5% reported current smoking. Exclusive current waterpipe smoking was reported by 7.2% of adult males, and a further 3.4% reported smoking both waterpipes and cigarettes. Tobacco smoking was rarely reported by females;among them the national prevalence of current cigarette smoking was 0.3%. This study produced the first robust estimate of the national prevalence of cigarette and waterpipe smoking in Egypt based on a rigorous probability sample. Along with the more recent Global Adult Tobacco Survey, carried out by the World Health Organization in 2009, the results will be useful in assessing smoking trends in Egypt and in evaluating the impacts of recent tobacco control laws.

Extraordinary piezoelectric effect induced in two-dimensional rare earth monochalcogenides via reducing system dimensionality

Piezoelectricity is pivotal for applications in micro/nanoelectromechanical systems(MEMS/NEMS).Inducing such a property in 2D systems via the reduction of the dimensionality of their corresponding 3D bulk is here *** on DFT theory and Gaussian-type-localized basis sets,the structural,electronic,mechanical,and piezoelectric properties of both 3D and 2D rare earth monochalcogenides RmX(Rm=Tm,Yb,Lu,and X=S,Se,Te)are investigated using the CRYSTAL *** intriguingly,the 2D LuX compounds display a buckled structure,where the Lu and X atoms protrude from the monolayer surface leading to an additional out-of-plane piezoelectric effect;(e_(31)=2104.84,1770.28,1689.79 pC/m,and d31=56.37,49.76,and 147.90 pm/V for LuS,LuSe,and LuTe,respectively).Such piezoelectric response is two orders of magnitude larger than the one of recently reported 2D ferroelectric MXenes,and is nearly thirty times larger than the commonly used AlN and GaN bulk ***,the reduced elastic constants obtained,when compared to other 2D materials,confirm the flexibility and softness of the considered 2D systems.

Radarsat observations and forecasting of oil slick trajectory movements

RADARSAT data have a potential role for coastal pollution monitoring. This study presents a new approach to detect and forecast oil slick trajectory movements. The oil slick trajectory movements is based on the tidal current effects and Fay's algorithm for oil slick spreading mechanisms. The oil spill trajectory model contains the integration between Doppler frequency shift model and Lagrangian model. Doppler frequency shift model implemented to simulate tidal current pattern from RADARSAT data while the Lagrangian model used to predict oil spill spreading pattern. The classical Fay's algorithm was implemented with the two models to simulate the oil spill trajectory *** study shows that the slick lengths are effected by tidal current V component with maximum velocity of 1.4 m/s. This indicates that oil slick trajectory path is moved towards the north direction. The oil slick parcels are accumulated along the coastline after 48 h. The analysis indicated that tidal current V components were the dominant forcing for oil slick spreading.

Induction of sub-G0 arrest and apoptosis by seed extract of Moringa peregrina（Forssk.） Fiori in cervical and prostate cancer cell lines

Objective: This study investigated cytotoxicity and induction of apoptosis in human cervical cancer cells(HelA) and prostate cancer cells(PC-3) using the most active fraction of Moringa peregrina seed ***: Dried and powdered seeds were extracted using 95% ethanol. The total ethanolic extract was further dissolved in distilled water and separated into petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and aqueous extracts. Based on the results of in vitro anticancer studies of all extracts, the most highly active extract was selected for evaluation of apoptosis induction and cell cycle analysis on HelA and PC-3 cells at its half maximal inhibitory concentration using flow cytometry;DNA fragmentation by agarose gel electrophoresis and the expression of protein were measured by Western ***: The chloroform fraction from the ethanolic extract of M. peregrina(CFEE) was the most active antitumor fraction. The selectivity index, determined using the normal Vero cell line, indicated that CFEE had a high degree of selectivity against HelA and PC-3 cells. CFEE induced apoptosis, confirmed by cell cycle arrest at sub-G0 phase and DNA fragmentation. CFEE induced an increase in mRNA expression of caspase-3, a decrease in Bcl-2 mRNA expression, and decreased ATP levels. CFEE increased protein expression of caspase-3 and decreased protein expression of poly-ADP-ribose polymerase-1(PARP-1).Flow cytometric analysis showed an appreciable increase in the number of cells in the early apoptotic stage in CFEE-treated HelA and PC-3 cells. CFEE treatment significantly increased lipid peroxidation(malondialdehyde level) in HelA and PC-3 ***: Seed extract of M. peregrina displayed a significant antitumor effect through apoptosis induction in HelA and PC-3 cells.

Utility of endoscopic ultrasound in pancreatitis:A review

The close proximity of the endoscopic ultrasound probe to the pancreas results in superior spatial resolution compared to CT scan and MRI. In addition, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is a minimally invasive procedure that does not share the relatively high complication rate of ERCP. Due to these advantages, EUS has evolved into an important technique to assess pancreatobiliary disease. This review will discuss the role of EUS in patients with pancreatitis. The indications can be divided into acute pancreatitis and chronic pancreatitis. In acute pancreatitis, EUS is used to determine the etiology; in suspected chronic pancreatitis it is helpful to establish the diagnosis. Lastly, this review will discuss biliary pancreatitis with suspicion for persistent choledocholithiasis.

Relationships between Hydraulic Parameters of the Nubian Aquifer and Wells in el Shab Area, South Western Desert, Egypt (A Case Study)

For proper water management in the new reclaimed areas, hydraulic parameters of both aquifer and wells related to transmissivity, specific capacity, well loss, formation loss, and water entrance velocity, as well as the relationship between these parameters are the main target after construction of production wells. In el Shab area, the Nubian Sandstone aquifer has a large range of transmissivity (from 483.12 to 1489.24 m2/day) and, also, specific capacity (from 203 to 486.32 m2/day). Relationship of specific capacity and transmissivity is constructed and the established empirical equations can be used to predict the transmissivity of the Nubian aquifer in all new proposed sites for well drilling at which the specific capacity measured without performing pumping tests. On the other hand, the drilled wells in el Shab area exhibit relatively high well losses (25%). The causes for high well losses (entrance velocity (Vn) through water well screen and the distance from the point of water entrance in the well to the point of intake in the pump) are discussed and the relationships are constructed, which seem a positive linear correlation. Relationships between well losses constant for 30 wells with transmissivity and specific capacity, are constructed. These relationships are useful for estimating hydraulic characteristics that are needed for the designs of wells and well fields and for preliminary water-resources management.

Skin-Adhesive Tape versus Interrupted Suture in Episiotomy Skin Repair: Randomized Control Trial

Introduction: The ideal method for perineal repair should be quick, easy to perform and preferably, with minimal pain. Aim: To compare skin adhesive tape and interrupted?absorbable subcuticular suture for episiotomy repair after birth as regard postoperative pain, skin closure time and wound infection. Design: Prospective double-blinded randomized controlled trial. Methods: Three-hundred qualified patients were equally distributed between two groups. Group 1 underwent skin repair with skin adhesive tape, while group 2 underwent the currently traditional method for perineal repair by interrupted suture. Pain was evaluated at 2, 4, 6 and 12 hours after birth then daily until one week using Wong-Baker faces pain rating scale with verbal expression for pain intensity as primary outcome. Skin closure time and wound infection were also evaluated as secondary outcomes. Results: Statistically significant difference in pain was?found at 4 and 6 hours, and 3,?4,?5 and 7 days after perineal repair in favor of the adhesive tape group (p = 0.04 and 0.02 respectively) (p = 0.002, 0.002, 0.003 and 0.001 respectively). No statistically significant difference was found in skin closure time between both groups, and no cases of wound infection occurred in both groups (p = 0.3). Conclusion: Skin adhesive tape may be superior to skin suturing in decreasing pain resulting from perineal repair after birth;however, further studies are needed to assess long-term effects, calculate costs and accurately measure patients’ satisfaction, which were not addressed in this study.
