Morphometric Attributes of Two Native Forage Species According to Water Source Distance in Semiarid Central Grasslands of Argentina

This study focuses on the analysis of a carbonate bioclastic pocket beach located along a coastal sector of the Apulia Ionian Sea,Le Dune beach,South *** beach develops for about 800 m and it is exposed to the south-westerly and southerly *** sediments range from very coarse to medium-fine sands and they are ma.nly composed of bioclasts(more than 90%)which include molluscs,foraminifers,echinoderms,algae branched,bryozoans,spicules of sponges and *** study area is one part of a ma.ine protected reserve characterised by 15 different habitats of the typical Mediterranean submerged populations and the presence of Posidonia oceanica *** aim of our research is to highlight the correlation between physical and biological processes influencing Le Dune beach dynamics and its sediment provenance by analysing the textural and compositional characteristics of beach sands,which is fundamental for pocket beach *** beach sand analysis,deriving from textural,compositional and bioclast investigations,underlines that one of the ma.n indicators of the beach dynamics is the bioclast component,which provides relevant informa.ion about sand provenance and sediment *** beach constitutes a semi-close system only nourished by the shells of organisms and by the erosion of headlands and dunes without important sediment interchange with adjacent littoral sectors.

Genetics of barley tiller and leaf development

In cereals, tillering and leaf development are key factors in the concept of crop ideotype, introduced in the 1960 s to enhance crop yield, via ma.ipulation of plant architecture. In the present review, we discuss advances in genetic analysis of barley shoot architecture,focusing on tillering, leaf size and angle. We also discuss novel phenotyping techniques, such as 2 D and 3 D ima.ing, that have been introduced in the era of phenomics, facilitating reliable trait measurement. We discuss the identification of genes and pathways that are involved in barley tillering and leaf development,highlighting key hormones involved in the control of plant architecture in barley and rice. Knowledge on genetic control of traits related to plant architecture provides useful resources for designing ideotypes for enhanced barley yield and performa.ce.

Selective uptake of ma.or and trace elements in Erica andevalensis,an endemic species to extreme habitats in the Iberian Pyrite Belt

To assess the ecophysiological traits and the phytoremediation potential of the endemic heather Erica andevalensis, we determined the concentrations of ma.or and trace elements in different plant parts and in rizosphere soils from Riotinto mining district （Huelva, Spain）. The results showed that E. andevalensis ma. grow on substrates with very high As, Cu, Fe and Pb concentrations （up to 4114, 1050, 71900 and 15614μg/g dry weight, respectively）, very low availability of ma.ro- and micronutrients and with pH values ranging from 3.3 to 4.9. In these harsh edaphic conditions E. andevalensis selectively absorbed and translocated essential nutrients and excludes potentially phytotoxic elements, which were accumulated in the root epidermis. The concentrations of ma.or and trace elements in E. andevalensis aerial parts from the Riotinto mining district were in the norma. range for plants; likewise other Erica species it accumulated Mn and only in a very polluted site we measured leaf concentrations of As and Pb within the excessive or toxic limits for plants. Differently from previous studies, which emphasized the soil pH and bioavailability of phytotoxic elements as the ma.n stress factors, this study showed that in the Riotinto region, E. andevalensis can tolerate wide range of pH and toxic element concentrations; the harshest environments colonized by monospecific patches of this species were characterized above all by very low availability of nutrients. The extraordinary capability to adapt to these extreme habitats ma.e E. andevalensis a priority species to promote the phytostabilization and the development of a self-sustaining vegetative cover on Riotinto mine tailings.

By exploiting the combined use of a heterogeneous recyclable palladium(II)-bis(N-heterocyclic carbene)catalyst and cyclopentyl methyl ether(CPME)as a convenient recoverable safer reaction medium,an effective wasteminimized approach has been developed for the intramolecular Pd-catalyzed C(sp3)-H activation of methyl pyrrole *** synthetic tools has allowed to access condensed N-heterocycles generally endowed with biological activities and representatively are the core motif of complex molecules such as Mitomycines and *** heterogeneous catalytic system could be recovered and reused up to representative five runs without any loss in *** target products(19 examples)have been obtained selectively and with excellent isolated yields up to 93%.The approach leads to the definition of a protocol with a very good E-factor(21)which is much lower(up to 98%)than those of comparable literature *** green metrics have been calculated and the data collected demonstrate that our newly developed protocol is very promising in terms of its environmental impact profile.

Phlebotomy improves histology in chronic hepatitis C ma.es with mild iron overload

AIM:To investigate the usefulness of mild iron depletion and the factors predictive for histological improvement following phlebotomy in Caucasians with chronic hepatitis C(CHC). METHODS:We investigated 28 CHC Caucasians with persistently elevated serum aminotransferase levels and non responders to,or unsuitable for,antiviral therapy who underwent mild iron depletion(ferritin≤70 ng/mL) by long-term *** improvement,as defined by at least one point reduction in the staging score or,in case of unchanged stage,as at least two points reduction in the grading score(Knodell),was evaluated in two subsequent liver biopsies(before and at the end of phlebotomy,48±16 mo apart).RESULTS:Phlebotomy showed an excellent safety *** improvement occurred in 12/28 phlebotomized *** ma.es responded to *** univariate logistic analysis alcohol intake(P=0.034),high histological grading(P=0.01) and high hepatic iron concentration(HIC)(P=0.04) before treatment were associated with histological *** logistic analysis showed that in ma.es high HIC was the only predictor of histological improvement following phlebotomy(OR=1.41, 95%CI:1.03-1.94,P=0.031).Accordingly,12 out of 17(70%)patients with HIC≥20μmol/g showed histological improvements at the second biopsy. CONCLUSION:ma.e CHC Caucasian non-responders to antiviral therapy with low-grade iron overload can benefit from mild iron depletion by long-term phlebotomy.
