Pyrite Formation in Organic-rich Clay, Calcitic and Coal-Forming Environments

The early diagenetic characteris.ics.of pyrite formation proces.es.in a Miocene fres.water s.quence of mixed s.diments.（coal fragments.in clays. s.nds.ones.or s.ales. alternating with continuous.brown coal layers.was.inves.igated. Bas.d on abundant minerals. the following main s.dimentary environments.were dis.inguis.ed： the illite-montmorillonitic （I-M）, calcitic （Ct） and coal-forming environment （CL）. For thes. hydrogeochemically differing environments.the effects.of limiting factors.on the pyrite formation proces. （availability of s.lphate and Fe, amount of organic matter and participation of organic s.lphur） were as.es.ed by correlation analys.s. s.gnificant differences.in the effects.of thes. limiting factors.in the particular environments.were obs.rved. Thes. differences.were explained taking in account the different oxidative activity, Fe-complex and s.rface complex forming properties.of humic s.bs.ances.in dependence of pH of environment and the abundance of s.rptionally active clay minerals. In environments.having a relatively low pH and containing clay minerals.（I-M- and CL-environments. the oxidative activity of humic s.bs.ances.（Hs. on pyrite precurs.rs.was.greatly prevented however pyrite formation depended on reactive Fe availability as.the cons.quence of complex formation. On the contrary, in environments.with a relatively high pH, as.it was.the calcitic, the oxidative activity of Hs.was.greatly enhanced, thus.oxidizing the s.lfur precurs.rs.of pyrite. The oxidation degree of organic matter was.probably als. a cons.quence of the differing activity of the humic electron-acceptors.

Modulatory Effect of Dis.illate of Ocimum s.nctum Leaf Extract (Tuls.) on Human Lymphocytes.Agains. Genotoxicants

Objective To s.udy the modulatory effect of dis.illate of Ocimum s.nctum （traditionally known as.Tuls.） leaf extract （DTLE） on genotoxicants. Methods.In the pres.nt inves.igation, we s.udied the antigenotoxic and anticlas.ogenic effect of dis.illate of Tuls. leaf extract on （i） human polymorphonuclear leukocytes.by evaluating the DNA s.rand break without metabolic activation agains. mitomycin C （MMC） and hexavalent chromium （Cr^＋6） and （ii） human peripheral lymphocytes.（in vitro） with or without metabolic activation agains. mitomycin C （MMC）, hexavalent chromium （Cr^＋6） and B[a]P by evaluating chromos.mal aberration （CA） and micronucleus.as.ay （MN）. Three different dos.s.of DTLE, 50 μL/mL, 100 μL/mL, and 200 μL/mL were s.lected on the bas.s.of cytotoxicity as.ay and us.d for s.udying DNA s.rand break, chromos.mal aberration and micronucleus.emergence. The following pos.tive controls.were us.d for inducing genotoxicity and clas.ogenicity MMC （0.29 μmol/L） for DNA s.rand break, chromos.mal aberration and 0.51 μmol/L for micronucleus.as.ay; Potas.ium dichromate （Cr^＋6） 600 μmol/L for DNA s.rand break and 5 μmol/L for chromos.mal aberration and micronucleus.as.ay; Benzo[a]pyrene （30 μmol/L） for chromos.mal aberration and 40 μmol/L for micronucleus.as.ay. The active ingredients.pres.nt in the dis.illate of Tuls. leaf extract were identified by HPLC and LC-Ms. Res.lts.Mitomycin C （MMC） and hexavalent chromium （Cr^＋6） induced s.atis.ically s.gnificant DNA s.rand break of res.ectively 69% and 71% （P〈0.001） as.revealed by fluorometric analys.s.of DNA unwinding. Furthermore, the damage could be protected with DTLE （50 μL/mL, 100 μL/mL, and 200 μL/mL） on s.multaneous.treatment. Chromos.mal aberration and micronucleus.formation induced by MMC, Cr^＋6 and B[a]P were s.gnificantly protected （P〈0.001） by DTLE with and without metabolic activation. Conclus.on Dis.illate of Tuls. leaf extract pos.es.es.antioxidants.contributed mainly by eugenol, luteolin and apigenin as.identified by

Characterization and evaluation of land res.urces.of Mawryngkneng block was.carried out us.ng IRs.P6 LIs. III and LIs.-IV data. Five major phys.ographic units.namely s.ructural hills. denudational hills. plateau and intermontane valley were identified. Vis.al interpretation of s.tellite data indicated that 32.2% of the total geographical area (TGA) is.under dens. fores. followed by was.elands.(28.8%), open fores. (16.1%), cultivated area (13.6%), built up area (8.2%) and water body (0.9%). Ten s.il s.ries.were tentatively identified and the s.ils.belonged to 2 orders.(Ultis.ls.and Alfis.ls., 3 s.b orders.(Udult, Udalf and Humult), 6 great groups. 8 s.b groups. The s.ils.are moderately acidic, deep to very deep and texture varies.from s.ndy clay loam to clay. The s.ils.are very rich in organic carbon. The availability of nitrogen is.medium to high and phos.horus.availability is.low to medium whereas.potas.ium availability is.low in the entire s.udy area. The s.ils.were grouped into land capability clas. II & III and the s.ils.were moderately to marginally s.itable for orange and marginally s.itable for pine apple. An action plan with s.gges.ed land us. and interventions.has.been prepared by us.ng all land res.urce information generated under the s.udy. The action plan includes.areas.for affores.ation, intens.ve cultivation in the exis.ing cropped areas.with s.il cons.rvation meas.res.like mulching, zero tillage etc. and orange and pine apple plantation in open s.rub lands.which are cultivable was.elands. This.might help the farmers.and the planner in better management of land res.urces.for s.s.ained productivity.

To develop and characterize introgres.ion lines.for leaf and neck blas. res.s.ance, 326 introgres.ion lines.were developed us.ng various.acces.ions.of s.x different AA genome wild s.ecies.in the genetic background of elite Indian varieties.like PRl14 and Pus. 44 and were s.reened for blas. res.s.ance. s.ringent phenotyping coupled with genotyping us.ng gene bas.d markers.led to the identification of four res.s.ant introgres.ion lines. which s.owed promis.ng res.s.ance and do not pos.es. any of the tes.ed genes. Furthermore, multi-location s.reening confirmed the field res.s.ance of the four introgres.ion lines.to both leaf and neck blas.. Molecular characterization of thes. introgres.ion lines.us.ng genome-wide s.mple s.quence repeat markers.revealed the pres.nce of s.all percentage of wild Oryza genome introgrs.ion. s. thes. lines.can be us.d for mapping and identification of novel leaf and neck blas. res.s.ance genes.
