Prevalence of retinopathy of prematurity in Brunei Darussalam

AIM: To identify the prevalence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) among preterm neonates admitted to Department of Neonatology, RIPAS hospital, Brunei Darussalam. ·METHODS: We studied 67 preterm infants fulfilling the eligibility criteria for ROP screening. All infants studied were admitted to the Department of Neonatology, RIPAS Hospital, within a period of one year. Birth weight (BW), gestational age (GA), corrected age at each review, initial and final diagnoses and number of reviews required was recorded for each infant. Infants were followed up two weekly until they reach a corrected age of 40 weeks or complete vascularization was noted. Prevalence of ROP was identified. Descriptive analysis, regression analysis and independent-sample t-test were used to statistically check for differences between ROP and non -ROP groups. ·RESULTS: A total number of 201 ROP screenings were carried out for 67 preterm infants. Males outnumbered females (56.7%). The mean number of reviews per child was (3.19 ±1.1) times (range: 1 -6 times), the mean GA among the preterm babies examined was (29.5 ±2.6) weeks (range: 23 -36 weeks), and the mean BW was 1300 ±500g (range: 660 -3600g). The prevalence of ROP among the examined infants was 34.8% . Prevalence of threshold disease that required laser treatment was 25.4% . Prevalence of ROP among those with extremely low BW was 86.7% compared to 27.8% in those with very low BW. Respiratory distress and congenital heart diseases were significantly associated with higher incidence of ROP. ·CONCLUSION: Lower BW, lower GA and female gender are associated with higher risk of developing ROP among preterm infants in Brunei Darussalam.

3-Bromopyruvate(3BP) is a new, promising anticancer alkylating agent with several notable functions. In addition to inhibiting key glycolysis enzymes including hexokinase II and lactate dehydrogenase(LDH), 3BP also selectively inhibits mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, angiogenesis, and energy production in cancer cells. Moreover, 3BP induces hydrogen peroxide generation in cancer cells(oxidative stress effect) and competes with the LDH substrates pyruvate and lactate. There is only one published human clinical study showing that 3BP was effective in treating fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma. LDH is a good measure for tumor evaluation and predicts the outcome of treatment better than the presence of a residual tumor mass. According to the Warburg effect, LDH is responsible for lactate synthesis, which facilitates cancer cell survival, progression, aggressiveness, metastasis, and angiogenesis. Lactate produced through LDH activity fuels aerobic cell populations inside tumors via metabolic symbiosis. In melanoma, the most deadly skin cancer, 3BP induced necrotic cell death in sensitive cells, whereas high glutathione(GSH) content made other melanoma cells resistant to 3BP. Concurrent use of a GSH depletor with 3BP killed resistant melanoma cells. Survival of melanoma patients was inversely associated with high serum LDH levels, which was reported to be highly predictive of melanoma treatment in randomized clinical trials. Here, we report a 28-year-old man presented with stage IV metastatic melanoma affecting the back, left pleura, and lung. The disease caused total destruction of the left lung and a high serum LDH level(4,283 U/L). After ethics committee approval and written patient consent, the patient received 3BP intravenous infusions(1-2.2 mg/kg), but the anticancer effect was minimal as indicated by a high serum LDH level. Robust Non-Coherent Demodulation Scheme for Bluetooth Voice Transmission Using Linear, Extended, and Unscented Kalman Filtering

This paper presents a novel and cost effective method to be used in the optimization of the Gaussian Frequency Shift Keying (GFSK) at the receiver of the Bluetooth communication system. The proposed method enhances the performance of the noncoherent demodulation schemes by improving the Bit Error Rate (BER) and Frame Error Rate (FER) outcomes. Linear, Extended, and Unscented Kalman Filters are utilized in this technique. A simulation model, using Simulink, has been created to simulate the Bluetooth voice transmission system with the integrated filters. Results have shown improvements in the BER and FER, and that the Unscented Kalman Filters (UKF) have shown superior performance in comparison to the linear Kalman Filter (KF) and the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). To the best of our knowledge, this research is the first to propose the usage of the UKF in the optimization of the Bluetooth System receivers in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), as well as interferences.

The salinity stress is one of the most relevant abiotic stresses that affects the agricultural *** present study was performed to study the improvement of the salt tolerance of tomato plants which is known for their susceptibility to salt *** present study aimed to assess to what extent strain Azospirillum brasilense(N040)and Saccharomyces cerevisiae improve the salt tolerance to tomato plants treated with different salt *** inoculant strain ***(N040)was previously adapted to survive up to 7%NaCl in the basal media.A greenhouse experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of this inoculation on growth parameter such as:plant height,root length,fresh and dry weight,fruits fresh weight,chlorophyll content,proline and total soluble sugar in tomato plants under salt stress *** results revealed that co-inoculation of Azospirillum brasilense(N040)and Saccharomyces cerevisiae significantly increased the level of proline(8.63 mg/g FW)and total soluble sugar(120 mg/g FW)of leaves under salinity condition comparing to non-inoculated plants(2.3 mg/g FW and 70 mg/g FW,respectively).Plants co-inoculated with adapted strain of *** and *** showed the highest significant(peld(1166.6 g/plant),plant high(115 cm)and roots length(52.6)compared whit un-inoculated control plants(42 g/pant,43.3 cm and 29.6 cm,respectively).In contrast,Na^(+)ion content was significantly decreased in the leaves of salt stressed plants treated with the ***(N040)and ***,the results showed that dual benefits provided by both ***(N040)and *** can provide a major way to improve tomato yields in saline soils.

The oil industries are an important part of a country’s *** crude oil’s price is influenced by a wide range of ***,how accurately can countries predict its behavior and what predictors to employ are two main *** this view,we propose utilizing deep learning and ensemble learning techniques to boost crude oil’s price forecasting *** suggested method is based on a deep learning snapshot ensemble method of the Transformer *** examine the superiority of the proposed model,this paper compares the proposed deep learning ensemble model against different machine learning and statistical models for daily Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries(OPEC)oil price *** results demonstrated the outperformance of the proposed method over statistical and machine learning *** precisely,the proposed snapshot ensemble of Transformer method achieved relative improvement in the forecasting performance compared to autoregressive integrated moving average ARIMA(1,1,1),ARIMA(0,1,1),autoregressive moving average(ARMA)(0,1),vector autoregression(VAR),random walk(RW),support vector machine(SVM),and random forests(RF)models by 99.94%,99.62%,99.87%,99.65%,7.55%,98.38%,and 99.35%,respectively,according to mean square error metric.

Conventional direct torque control (DTC) is one of the excellent control strategies available to control the torque of the induction machine (IM). However, the low switching frequency of the DTC causes high ripples in the flux and torque that leads to an acoustic noise which degrades the control performances, especially at low speeds. Many direct torque control techniques were appeared to remedy these problems by focusing specifically on the torque and flux. In this paper, a state of the art review of various modern techniques for improving the performance of DTC control is presented. The objective is to make a critical analysis of these methods in terms of ripples reduction, tracking speed, switching loss, algorithm complexity and parameter sensitivity. Further, it is envisaged that the information presented in this review paper will be a valuable gathering of information for academic and industrial researchers.

Plasma concentrations of chlorinated persistent organic pollutants and their predictors in the general population of Algiers, Algeria

Background:Persistent organic pollutants(POPs)are subject of particular attention and in-depth studies which demonstrate their toxicity towards humans and biotope in *** are therefore addressed by the Stockholm Convention globally with human milk or blood as matrix for effectiveness ***:The objective of this study was to assess plasma concentrations of certain chlorinated POPs in subjects from the urban population in ***:A total number of 207 adult subjects were recruited in Algiers and plasma concentrations of Hexachlorobenzene(HCB),p,p’Dichlorodiphenyl DichloroEthylene(4,40 DDE)and Polychlorinated Biphenyls(PCBs)were determined by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry detection(GC-MS).Results:The nanogram per gram of lipids(ng g^(-1) lipids)geometric means of plasma concentrations of studied compounds were:6.09 for HCB,131.60 for 4,40 DDE,8.61 for PCB153,7.95 for PCB138 and 8.39 for *** 180,PCB 153 and PCB 138 showed a high correlation with each other(r>0.5).4,40 DDE concentrations were significantly higher in women and in subject with low educational level,whereas POPs were higher in older participants(>65 years old).Organochlorine pesticides(OCPs)and PCB153 concentrations were higher in overweight and obese *** was no significant difference between POPs concentrations according to breastfeeding history,smoking status or fish ***:Chlorinated POPs were detected in the blood plasma of adults living in *** concentrations were consistent with those of several studies in the ***,further investigations are needed to assess the exposure profile of subjects living near contaminated sites.

Helicobacter pylori may be an initiating factor in newly diagnosed ulcerative colitis patients: A pilot study

AIM To directly visualize Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) by the highly sensitive and specific technique of immunohistochemical staining in colonic tissue from patients newly diagnosed with ulcerative colitis(UC).METHODS Colonoscopic biopsies from thirty patients with newly diagnosed UC and thirty controls were stained with Giemsa stain and immunohistochemical stain for detection of H. pylori in the colonic tissue. Results were confirmed by testing H. pylori Ag in the stool then infected patients were randomized to receive either anti H. pylori treatment or *** Twelve/30(40%) of the UC patients were positive for H. pylori by Giemsa, and 17/30(56.6%) by immunohistochemistry stain. Among the control group 4/30(13.3%) and 6/30(20 %) were positive for H. pylori by Giemsa and immunohistochemistry staining respectively. H. pylori was significantly higher in UC than in controls(P = 0.04 and 0.007). All Giemsa positive patients and controls were positive by immunohistochemical stain. Four cases of the control group positive for H. pylori also showed microscopic features consistent with early *** H. pylori can be detected in colonic mucosa of patients with UC and patients with histological superficial ulcerations and mild infiltration consistent with early UC. There seems to be an association between UC and presence of H. pylori in the colonic tissue. Whether this is a causal relationship or not remains to be discovered.
