In malaria-endemic regions,people often get exposed to various pathogens simultaneously,generating coinfection *** such scenarios,overlapping symptoms pose serious diagnostic *** delayed diagnosis may lead to an increase in disease severity and catastrophic *** coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)has affected various areas globally,including malaria-endemic *** Plasmodium and SARS-CoV-2 co-infection and its effect on health are yet *** present a case report of a previously healthy,middle-aged individual from the malaria-endemic area who suffered SARS-CoV-2 and Plasmodium falciparum *** patient developed severe disease indications in a short time *** patient showed neurological symptoms,altered hematological as well as liver-test parameters,and subsequent death in a narrow time *** hereby discuss the various aspects of this case regarding treatment and hematological ***,we have put forward perspectives related to the mechanism behind severity and neurological symptoms in this fatal parasite-virus co-infection *** malaria-endemic regions,due to overlapping symptoms,suspected COVID-19 patients should also be monitored for diagnosis of malaria without any *** SARS-CoV-2 and Plasmodium co-infection could increase the disease severity in a short time *** treatment,dexamethasone may not help in severe cases having malaria as well as COVID-19 positive status and needs further exploration.

Study of Active Screening to Detect Un-Registered Open Cases of Tuberculosis in Rural Areas of Capital District of Rajasthan, India

Tuberculosis is one among top 10 causes of deaths worldwide. Access to effective diagnosis by every TB patient is one among five missions of Global Plan. Active case finding among vulnerable groups has been the key focus area of National Strategic Plan to control TB in India 2017-25. This cross-sectional study was carried out to find out the additional open cases of TB through active screening of general & rural population in selected villages of Jaipur, the capital district in Rajasthan state of India. An active screening team of trained staff visited each house-hold in selected study villages for interviewing the head of house-hold or other adult member available at the time of visit. Family members of age ≥ 15 years were screened for complain of chronic cough of duration 2 weeks or more with study questionnaire. Presumptive cases found at screening were referred for seeking medical consultations from nearest designated microscopy centre. The referred patients were followed up on telephone up to five times for results of medical consultancies. Laboratory technicians of catchment DMCs were also followed up for verification of results. Total 19,306 individuals were covered. Study included 52.8% male, 69.3% ≥ 15 years age, and 99.3% Hindu participants. There were total 153 presumptive TB patients. Out of these, total 10 cases were confirmed as TB. The yield of detection was 0.51 cases/1000 population screened. A Prospective Study of Factors Influencing Wound Dehiscence after Midline Laparotomy

Aim: To evaluate the factors influencing fascial wound dehiscence after midline laparotomy in the patients of perforation peritonitis with an emphasis on measurement of “intra-abdominal” pressure (IAP) and fascial transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta). Methods: Hundred eligible adult patients with the diagnosis of perforation peritonitis who underwent emergency exploratory laparotomy were prospectively recruited. Forty five patients who developed midline abdominal wound dehiscence were compared with 55 patients without dehiscence. Results: The variables that were significantly associated with wound dehiscence include anemia, hypo proteinemia, duration of surgery, prolonged postoperative ileus, wound infection and postoperative pulmonary infection. Age, gender, jaundice, cause of peritonitis, wound contamination and types of surgery were non significant variables. The mean IAP value in the patients with dehiscence was significantly higher than “non-dehiscence” group (p = 0.000). The patients with wound dehiscence strongly expressed TGF-beta on the day of burst. Conclusion: The patients of peritonitis undergoing prolonged surgery in the presence of risk factors like anemia, hypo proteinemia, postoperative ileus, wound infection and postoperative pulmonary infection have high risk of abdominal wound dehiscence.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide. India is still the highest TB burden country. There is a scarcity of data on TB knowledge from Rajasthan state of India. Objective: The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of knowledge about TB and services of TB control programme and to determine its correlates among rural population of Jaipur, Rajasthan. Methods: Cross-sectional community based study was carried out at Model Rural Health Research Unit, Jaipur, a unit of Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. Results: Study reports the result from 1993 adult participants from 10 villages of 2 sub-districts of district Jaipur. About 88.9% of studied participants knew that TB is an infectious disease and it spreads from TB patient to healthy person in close contact. Only 22.3% of participants knew “DOTS is the treatment for TB”. While, only 58.9% knew “sputum is used for diagnosis of TB” at health centers. Scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and backward classes social groups knew less than the mainstream “General” social group. The observed difference was statistically significant (p 0.05). Logistic regression analysis estimated the relative contribution to knowledge status. Conclusion: The knowledge of study participants on transmission of tuberculosis was similar to knowledge of population in country wide study. They poorly knew sputum is used for diagnosing tuberculosis disease;socio-demographic inequity exists in this knowledge too. People from older age groups, underprivileged social groups and minority need extra educational activities.

Black carbon(BC) is a strong light absorbing material in the fine Particulate Matter(PM) and has been often mixed with other toxic constituents, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(p-PAHs) or sulfate. The purpose of this study is to compare the dynamic of PM size distribution and the temporal pattern of BC and p-PAHs between near-source roadside site appeared as fresh particles and typical urban ambient site appeared as aged particles in Hong Kong from Jan. 25 to Mar. 1, 2016. High numbers of smaller size particle(0nm) and high BC and p-PAHs levels appear in the two rush hours at the roadside site, emphasizing the vehicle emissions play a significant role in this region. Total fresh BC and fresh p-PAHs at the roadside site averaged 3.8 ugm and 11.5 ngm and at urban ambient site the average values are 1.3 ugm and 4.1 ngm, respectively. The diurnal variations of aged BC and p-PAHs at 12:00 on weekdays were different from those on weekends by an obvious "unimodal" distribution. Higher correlation value(R=0.73, p<0.001) was obtained between aged BC and p-PAHs than those in fresh particles. Hourly ratios of aged p-PAHs/BC were increasing at 9:00 and started decreasing at 15:00 on weekdays. These results suggest that the intensive mixing processes of aged BC and aged p-PAHs occurred at noon. Typical optical parameters at 880 nm and 370 nm of aged and fresh particles were calculated to estimate the influence of BC coatings. As for aged aerosol, both the peak of absorption coefficient(b) and b70nm/b80nm were obtained at noon(12:00) on weekdays, emphasizing that the UV-absorbing material was abundant at noon via photochemical reaction from precursors, such as p-PAHs. In addition, the aged Absorption Angstrom coefficient(AAC) at 370-950 nm ranges from 0.8 to 1.5 with a mean value of 1.4, showing that BC coatings can cause AAC greater or less than unity, as the absorption enhancement by lensing can have a direct or inverse wavelength-dependence.

Dynamism of Antimicrobial Activity of Actinomycetes—A Case Study from Undisturbed Microbial Niche

Escalation of drug resistant microbes (bacteria) had forced researchers to search new and improved therapeutic compounds from different possible sources, including metabolites secreted by the actinomycetes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the pattern of antimicrobial actinomycetes from physiologically distinct soil of different geographical locations. Forty five soil samples were collected from 5 districts of Gujarat including two sanctuaries as source of survey for bioactive actinomycetes. Crowded plate technique was used for isolation and Agar cylinder method was employed for the antimicrobial screening. A total of 171 actinomycetes were isolated and screened against eighteen pathogens responsible for causing diseases in plants and humans. Results indicate that 79% of the isolates were active against at least one of the eighteen tested pathogens. Some of the actinomycetes strain had shown strong antibacterial and antifungal activity which may be a good source of obtaining novel antimicrobials.

遗传定位、基因标记与克隆、标记辅助选择(MAS)等分子生物学技术在作物品种改良中发挥了重要作用。近年来,辣椒分子生物学研究取得了一定进展:(1)构建了一批分布广泛、覆盖整个基因组的种间或种内遗传图谱。(2)对***及其野生种*** ***和***的全基因组进行测序,明确了辣椒基因组的大小(3.48 Gb)为番茄(Solanum lycopersicum L.)基因组(900 Mb)的4倍。(3)开发了一批连锁标记,奠定了利用基因克隆和MAS技术培育优良品种的基础。(4)发现20个独立遗传的核雄性不育(NMS)基因,开发了与ms1、ms3、ms8、ms10、msk、msc-1和一个未命名基因的连锁标记,但除ms1、ms3、ms8和ms10外,其他的NMS基因尚未定位。(5)开发了与辣椒胞质雄性不育系(CMS)不育性相关的线粒体基因atp6的标记,鉴定了与育性恢复(Rf)相关基因,但Rf没能在遗传图谱中定位;鉴定和标记了影响CMS系育性恢复的相关核基因(pr)。综述了辣椒分子生物学研究进展,这些信息将对辣椒种质资源评价、利用MAS培育NMS系和提高NMS系选育效率、利用rf和Rf基因选育CMS的保持系和恢复系,以及杂交种子纯度鉴定等具有一定参考价值。

Our earlier work showed that hydromethanol extract(HME)of Pleurotus fl orida had antioxidant and anticholinesterase *** study aimed at isolating the constituent responsible for the *** was subjected to bioactivity guided fractionation using in vitro anti-acetylcholinesterase(Ellman method)and antioxidant(DPPH scavenging assay).The most active constituent was evaluated in vivo employing ***(STZ)induced dementia in *** water maze test was used for evaluating memory,followed by biochemical estimations and histopathological *** guided fractionation resulted in isolation of resveratrol(identifi ed by IR,NMR and MS)and its content in *** orida fruiting bodies was 0.0098%(m/m,by a validated TLC densitometric method).It improved STZ induced dementia and neurodegeneration in mice by reducing brain acetylcholinesterase action and oxidative *** observed effects might be the presence of *** results further endorse that *** orida derived resveratrol can be a promising therapy for Alzheimer’s disease.

黑斑病是由芸薹链格孢菌引起的油菜病害,世界主要油菜产区均有发病报道。十字花科作物是黑斑病菌的主要寄主,目前,由于在油菜及其近缘种资源中未能筛选出黑斑病的有效抗原,因而该病的发生常造成油菜生产的严重损失。该病菌受天气影响非常明显,在潮湿季节和相对降水量高的地区该病菌的致病率最高。在寄主所有生长阶段均可被黑斑病菌侵染;发病症状特点是叶、茎和角果上形成斑点。诱导抗性的信号分子的识别、生物配方的发展以及疾病预报模式将能够触发环保的疾病管理的新机制,提供更安全的抗黑斑病油菜产品并提高油菜健康。
