The role of emergency incident type in identifying first responders' health exposure risks

Fire-based emergency management service(EmS)personnel are dispatched to various incidents daily,many of which have unique occupational risks.To fully understand the variability of incident types and how to best pre-pare and respond,an exploration of the U.S.coding system of incident types is necessary.This study uses potential exposure to SARS-CoV-2 as a case example to understand if and how coding categories for incident call types may be updated to improve data standardization and emergency response decision making.Researchers received emergency response incident data generated by three fire department computer-aided dispatch(CAD)systems between march and September 2020.Each incident was labeled EmS,Fire,or Other.Of the 162,766 incidents,approximately 8.1%(n=13,144)noted potential SARS-CoV-2 exposure within their narrative descriptions of which 86.3%were coded as EmS,9.9%as Fire,and 3.9%as Other.To assess coding variability across incident types,researchers used the original 3-incident type variable and a new 5-incident type variable reassigned by researchers into EmS,Fire,Other,Hazmat,and motor Vehicle.Logit regressions compared differences in potential exposure using the 3-and 5-incident type variables.When evaluating the 3-incident type variable,those respond-ing to a Fire versus an EmS incident were 84%less likely to be associated with potential exposure to SARS-Cov-2.For the 5-incident type variable,those responding to Fire incidents were 77%less likely to be associated with a potential exposure than those responding to EmS incidents.Changes in potential exposure between the 3-and 5-incident type models show the need to understand how incident types are assigned.This demonstrates the need for data standardization to accurately categorize incident types to improve emergency preparedness and response.Results have implications for incident type coding at fire department municipality and national levels.

mSH1 Is a Plant Organellar DNA Binding and Thylakoid Protein under Precise Spatial Regulation to Alter Development

As metabolic centers, plant organelles participate in maintenance, defense, and signaling. mSH1 is a plant- specific protein involved in organeUar genome stability in mitochondria and plastids. Plastid depletion of mSH1 causes heritable, non-genetic changes in development and DNA methylation. We investigated the rash I phenotype using hemi-complementation mutants and transgene-null segregants from RNAi suppres- sion lines to sub-compartmentalize mSH1 effects. We show that mSH1 expression is spatially regulated, specifically localizing to plastids within the epidermis and vascular parenchyma. The protein binds DNA and localizes to plastid and mitochondrial nucleoids, but fractionation and protein-protein interactions data indicate that mSH1 also associates with the thylakoid membrane. Plastid mSH1 depletion results in variegation, abiotic stress tolerance, variable growth rate, and delayed maturity. Depletion from mitochon- dria results in 7%-10% of plants altered in leaf morphology, heat tolerance, and mitochondrlal genome sta- bility. mSH1 does not localize within the nucleus directly, but plastid depletion produces non-genetic changes in flowering time, maturation, and growth rate that are heritable independent of mSH 1. mSH1 deple- tion alters non-photoactive redox behavior in plastids and a sub-set of mitochondrially altered lines. Ectopic expression produces deleterious effects, underlining its strict expression control. Unraveling the complexity of the mSH1 effect offers insight into triggers of plant-specific, transgenerational adaptation behaviors.

Supercurrent decay in ballistic magnetic Josephson junctions

We investigate transport properties of ballistic magnetic Josephson junctions and establish that suppression of supercurrent is an intrinsic property of the junctions,even in absence of disorder.By studying the role of ferromagnet thickness,magnetization,and crystal orientation we show how the supercurrent decays exponentially with thickness and identify two mechanisms responsible for the effect:(i)large exchange splitting may gap out minority or majority carriers leading to the suppression of Andreev reflection in the junction,(ii)loss of synchronization between different modes due to the significant dispersion of the quasiparticle velocity with the transverse momentum.Our results for Nb/Ni/Nb junctions are in good agreement with recent experimental studies.Our approach combines density functional theory and the Bogoliubov-de Gennes model and opens a path for material composition optimization in magnetic Josephson junctions and superconducting magnetic spin valves.

Understanding pedestrian behavior and spatial relations:A pedestrianized area in Besiktas,Istanbul

This research provides a mixed method of investigating and analyzing pedestrian behavior in pedestrianized areas,which is one of the human-based urban development practices.The relationship between pedestrian behavior and perception of the city is discussed through a combination of architect and urban planner Gordon Cullen’s theory and Space Syntax methodology.This study examines the development and implementation of the methodology to understand the relationship between pedestrian behavior and space in Besiktas koyici settlement,Istanbul.The methodology,integrated with on-site observations(observing 10 min at five different observation points in the settlement at predetermined times on weekdays and weekends),surveys(determining pedestrian movement and perception in terms of Cullen’s theory)and spatial configuration(Space Syntax analysis(connectivity,integrity)done with DepthmapX software),aims to analyze pedestrian behavior patterns.The concepts of sense of place and content,as well as the effects of their sub-concepts on their behaviors,were revealed because of a survey conducted with students and architects of variety of educational levels who are daily users of the field.Pedestrian counting and observations were used to create density,activity,and mobility maps of the area.It has been found that pedestrianized areas have a significant impact on pedestrian behavior through influencing vitality and appeal and that Cullen’s theory may be used to analyze pedestrian behavior and perceptions of the city.The study showed that spatial configuration and Cullen’s theory effect pedestrian movement by complementing each other.

Influence of Flux and Sulfur on YAG Laser Welding

The influence of flux and sulfur content on YAG laser welding has been investigated, and the influencing factors and mechanism were discussed. The results show that both surface activating flux and surface active element S have fantastic effects on the YAG laser weld shape, that is to obviously increase the weld penetration and D/W ratio in various welding conditions. The mechanism is thought to be the change of surface tension temperature coefficient in weld pool, thus, the change of fluid flow paten in weld pool due to the flux and sulfur.

At the Weizmann Institute of Science,a new high-power-laser laboratory has been established that is dedicated to the fundamental aspects of laser–matter interaction in the relativistic regime and aimed at developing compact laser-plasma accelerators for delivering high-brightness beams of electrons,ions,and x rays.The HIGGINS laser system delivers two independent 100 TW beams and an additional probe beam,and this paper describes its commissioning and presents the very first results for particle and radiation beam delivery.

Biomass solid fuel(BSF)has emerged as a promising renewable energy source,but its morphological and microstructural properties are crucial in determining their physical,mechanical,and chemical characteristics.This paper provides an overview of recent research on BSF.The focus is on biomass sources,BSF processing methods,and morphological and microstructural properties,with a special emphasis on energy-related studies.Specific inclusion and exclusion criteria were established for the study to ensure relevance.The inclusion criteria encompassed studies about BSFs and studies investigating the influence of biomass sources and processing methods on the morphological and microstructural properties of solid fuels within the past five years.Various technologies for converting biomass into usable energy were discussed,including gasification,torrefaction,carbonization,hydrothermal carbonization(HTC),and pyrolysis.Each has advantages and disadvantages in energy performance,techno-economics,and climate impact.Gasification is efficient but requires high investment.Pyrolysis produces bio-oil,char,and gases based on feedstock availability.Carbonization generates low-cost biochar for solid fuels and carbon sequestration applications.Torrefaction increases energy density for co-firing with coal.HTC processes wet biomass efficiently with lower energy input.Thermal treatment affects BSF durability and strength,often leading to less durability due to voids and gaps between particles.Hydrothermal carbonization alters surface morphology,creating cavities,pores,and distinctive shapes.Slow pyrolysis generates biochar with better morphological properties,while fast pyrolysis yields biochar with lower porosity and surface area.Wood constitutes 67%of the biomass sources utilized for bioenergy generation,followed by wood residues(5%),agro-residues(4%),municipal solid wastes(3%),energy crops(3%),livestock wastes(3%),and forest residues(1%).Each source has advantages and drawbacks,such as availability,cost,environmental impact,and suitabilit
