Second-line panitumumab as a triweekly dose for patients with wild-type KRAS exon 2 metastatic colorectal cancer:a single-institution experience

Objective: Panitumumab administered as monotherapy in colorectal cancer(cRc) has shown response and disease stabilization rates of approximately 30%. The current study aimed to evaluate the progression-free survival(PFS) and overall survival(OS) of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer(mcRc) treated with panitumumab every 3 weeks as a second line ***: This study is a retrospective analysis of 18 patients, aged more than 18 years, with wild-type KRAS exon 2 mcRc treated with panitumumab as a second-line single agent after progression on first-line ***: The median number of courses received was 10(range, 4-29), and the median duration of treatment was 30 weeks(range,12-96 weeks). After a median follow-up period of 13 months, the median PFS was 6 months(range, 4.3-7.7 months) and the median OS was 11 months(range, 7.4-14.5 months). The median PFS was 4 months for patients with city and 6months(range, 4.5-7.5 months) for patients with ≥ grade 2 skin rash(P=0.05). The median OS was 9 months(range, 6.4-11.5months) and 14 months(range, 11.6-16.3 months) for the two groups of patients(P=0.002).conclusions: Panitumumab given every 3 weeks is effective and well tolerated in patients with advanced cRc that progressed after standard chemotherapy.

The increasing pace of urbanization means that cities and global organizations are looking for ways to increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions. combined cooling, heating, and power （ccHP） systems have the potential to improve the energy generation efficiency of a city or urban region by providing energy for heating, cooling, and electricity simultaneously. The purpose of this study is to estimate the water consumption for energy generation use, carbon dioxide （cO2） and NOx emissions, and economic impact of implementing ccHP systems for five generic building types within the Atlanta metropolitan region, under various operational scenarios following the building thermal （heating and cooling） demands. Operating the ccHP system to follow the hourly thermal demand reduces cO2 emissions for most building types both with and without net metering. The system can be economically beneficial for all building types depending on the price of natural gas, the implementation of net metering, and the cost structure assumed for the ccHP system. The greatest reduction in water consumption for energy production and NOx emissions occurs when there is net metering and when the system is operated to meet the maximum yearly thermal demand, although this scenario also results in an increase in greenhouse gas emissions and, in some cases, cost. ccHP systems are more economical for medium office, large office, and multifamilv residential buildings.

Asymmetrical mate preference in recently adapted White Sands and black lava populations of Sceloporus undulatus

Speciation can proceed rapidly when natural and sexual selection act in concert. For example speciation can be ac- celerated when traits that confer a selective advantage in a particular habitat also influence mate preference. Studying parallel but evolutionarily independent instances of ecological divergence can illuminate the interaction between natural and sexual selection during speciation. Locally adapted populations of the eastern fence lizard Sceloporus undulatus have recently evolved in three different habitats in the chihuahuan desert： blanched color morphs occur on the gypsum dunes of White Sands, melanic color morphs occur on the carrizozo lava flow, and brown color morphs occur in the surrounding desert scrubland. In addition to dif- ferences in cryptic dorsal coloration, populations also differ in the size and color of ventral patches used for social signaling. This system therefore provides an opportunity to investigate the interplay of natural and sexual selection during rapid ecological speci- ation. We used mate preference experiments to determine whether locally adapted populations may exhibit the early stages of be- havioral reproductive isolation. We observed an asymmetrical mate preference in this system; White Sands males preferentially courted local females, while males from dark soils and black lava populations did not exhibit a preference for local mates. We also found that female behavior and ventral patch phenotype were associated with male courtship. Our results suggest that the observed preference for local mates evolved at White Sands, and we discuss the possible link between local adaptation and traits involved in mate preference in this system [current Zoology 59 （1）： 20-30, 2013].

Service life prediction of AP/Al/HTPB solid rocket propellant with consideration of softening aging behavior

The aging behavior of softening composite solid propellant was investigated by measuring its mechanical and ballistic prosperities during prolonged storage at elevated and room temperatures. Accelerated aging was conducted at 65 °c for 231 days while the normal aging was performed at 25 ± 3 °c and relative humidity less than 50% for 8 years. The mechanical properties were obtained from uniaxial tensile tests for the aged propellant specimens while the ballistic properties were determined from static firing tests of subscale motors aged for 112 days at 65 °c. The mechanical results show that the maximum tensile strength and Young's modulus initially increase and subsequently decrease with increasing aging time, while the maximum tensile strain generally increases with increasing aging time. The ballistic properties like burning rate show a small change which cannot affect the ballistic performance. The experimental results show that the changes in the mechanical properties are significant during the aging period, but the burning rate does not undergo significant changes. From this study, it is observed that the propellant ages through a combination of reactions like post-cure, oxidative cross-linking, chain scission, and hydrolysis. The chain scission and the hydrolysis effect are the most significant process, which makes the propellant soft and extendible. The observed aging mechanism has been modeled using an exponential function with two terms which can describe the complex behavior of the aging. By applying Arrhenius equation,the activation energy values were obtained based on the propellant mechanical properties. The shelf life of this propellant formulation at 25 °c is predicted to be 13 years using the modulus as failure criteria and control parameter.

conserving natural resources through food loss reduction: Production and consumption stages of the food supply chain

Globally, attention has been drawn to the increasingly alarming rates of food loss and waste (FLW) along the food supply chain (FSc) and its contributions to the depletion of the natural resources and rise in greenhouse gas emissions. Within the past decade, discovery of the rippling impacts of this interrelationship has generated an increased sense of urgency in efforts amongst scholars, global leaders, government and non-government agencies to research, and formulate comprehensive plans and goals to address and reduce the rates of global FLW. Not only does FLW lessen the quantity of available food, but also, the availability of the many natural resources required to produce food. This will become an important factor when the world population increases by more than 30% by the year 2050. Although advances have been made, still 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted every year due to various underlying causes and challenges. This enormous quantity of wasted food also represents an increase in usage of natural resources. In the United States (U.S.), food and agriculture consume up to 16% of energy, almost half of the land, and account for 67% of the nation's freshwater use (NRDc, 2017). The rate of natural resource depletion is not sustainable, and it endangers the ecosystem. multiple reports have cited the first and last stages of the FSc as the most significant contributors of FLW and environmental resource depletion. This literature review attempts to provide a comprehensive assessment of the intricacies of the FSc, the multi-variable causes of global FLW at the production and consumption stages, its environmental implications and the necessary sustainability compliant actions.

A simple and inexpensive method for muddy shore profiling

There are several well-established methods for obtaining beach profiles, and more accurate and precise high-tech methods are emerging. Traditional low-cost methods requiring minimal user skill or training are still popular among professionals, scientists, and coastal zone management practitioners. Simple methods are being developed with a primary focus on sand and gravel beaches. This paper describes a simple, low-cost, manual field method for measuring profiles of beaches, which is particularly suitable for muddy shores. The equipment is a type of flexible U-tube manometer that uses liquid columns in vertical tubes to measure differences in elevation; the supporting frame is constructed from wooden poles with base disks, which hold measuring scales and a PVc tube. The structure was trialed on a mudflat characterized by a 20~0-cm-thick surface layer of silt and clay, located at the Kutubdia Island, Bangladesh. The study results are discussed with notes on the method＇s applicability, advantages and limitations, and several optional modifications for different scenarios for routine profiling of muddy shores. The equipment can be used by one person or two people, and the accuracy of the method is comparable to those in other methods. The equipment can also be used on sandy or gravel beaches.

Bilirubin sensor based on cuO-cdO composites deposited in a nafion/glassy carbon electrode matrixes

copper oxide-cadmium oxide nanocomposites(cuO-cdO Ncs) were synthesized by solvothermal technique in a basic medium. cuO-cdO Ncs were characterized using conventional techniques, such as Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR), UV–Visible Spectroscopy(UV/Vis), Field-Emission Scanning Electron microscopy(FESEm), X-ray electron dispersive spectroscopy(XEDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), and powder X-ray diffraction(XRD). A selective and enzyme-less Bilirubin(BLR) sensor was developed with a thin-layer of Ncs onto a glassy carbon electrode(GcE, surface area = 0.0316 cm~2) using 5% nafion binders at room conditions. Improved electrochemical performances of higher sensitivity, lower detection limit,linear dynamic range(LDR), and long-term stability of preferred BLR were achieved by a reliable currentvoltage(I-V) approach. The calibration curve was found linear(R~2= 0.9347) in a wide range of BLR concentration(10.0 pm ~ 10.0 mm). Based on the signal to noise ratio value of 3, the sensitivity and limit of detection(LOD) of the sensor were calculated as 95.0 pA μm-1cm-2and 1.0 ± 0.1 pm *** synthesized cuO-cdO Ncs/GcE is an excellent advancement of developing a selective and sensitive BLR sensor by electrochemical approach and practically implemented in real sample applications.
