The management, control and elimination of tuberculosis (TB) have been difficult with the advent of HIV and cases of multidrug resistant (mDR-TB) tuberculosis. The cases of multidrug resistance to rifampicin and isoniazid pose greater challenges on first line and second line drugs to eliminate TB. The study is aimed at establishing anti-tuberculosis activity of Tetrapleura tetraptera against mycobacterium tuberculosis and mDR-TB and the phytochemical present. The leaves of Tetrapleura tetraptera were collected, weighed, dried and pulverized to powder. The pulverized leaves of Tetrapleura tetraptera were subjected to 70% methanol extraction and screened for phytochemical. The crude extract was further purified into fractions using silica gel and thin layer chromatography techniques. m. tuberculosis and mDR-TB were obtained from positive acid fast bacilli sputa of TB patients and confirmed using GeneXpert to differentiate genotypic drug susceptible m. tuberculosis and mDR-TB. The sputa were digested using sodium hydroxide-cysteine technique and cultured in middlebrook 7H9. The crude extract and fractions were screened for anti-tuberculosis activity using tetrazolium microtitre plate assay. The results showed that Tetrapleura tetraptera crude had activities against m. tuberculosis at 7.4 ± 0 mg/ml and 27.5 ± 0 mg/ml for mDR-TB. One of the fractions inhibited the growth of m. tuberculosis at 0.24 ± 0 mg/ml and mDR-TB at 0.89 ± 0 mg/ml. The phytochemical screened includes tannins, alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, phenols and resins. T. tetraptra possesses anti-tuberculosis potential at low concentration on mDR-TB and can be a lead compound in drug development for the treatment of tuberculosis and multidrug resistant tuberculosis.

Struchium sparganophora Linn. Ktze Asteraceae is a culinary herb that is consumed in the Western part of Nigeria and has wide medicinal uses in traditional medicine. The present study was carried out to determine the chemical composition of the oils from its leaf and stem and their antibacterial activity. Essential oils were collected from the leaf and stem of Struchium sparganophora by hydrodistillation and analysed by GC and GC-mS. The antimicrobial activity was tested against Gram negative (G-ve) and Gram positive (G + ve) microorganisms obtained from the medical microbiology Unit, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Nigeria. Forty-six compounds were identified in the leaf representing 95.3% of the total oil while fifty-five compounds were identified in the stem representing 93.5% of the oil. β-caryophyllene, Germacrene A, a-humulene and Germacrene D represented the major components in both oils. Antibacterial activity of the oils against certain strains of bacteria showed that the different concentrations of the oils (100 – 10,000 ppm) from the leaf had activity ranging from 9.0 ± 1.0 to 14.3 ± 2.55 mm while that from the stem had activity ranging from 18.5 ± 2.2 to 20.0 ± 0.0 mm for both *** G + ve microorganisms respectively.

Nutritional Status and Physical Activities among Army Trainees in Public Institutions of Higher Education in malaysia

This study was conducted to evaluate the nutritional status and physical activities of university students that enrolled in military training with the age range of 20 - 34 years. Nutritional status assessment was based on eating habit questionnaires, anthropometric measurements with body mass index (BmI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), food intake records for three days and also food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Assessment of physical activities was carried out using physical activities records. Food intake and physical activities data were analyzed using the Nutri-Antro Web (NAW) software. Generally, the subjects were found to have good nutrition knowledge and food intake habits, except for having an irregular meal time (85.0%). Based on BmI studies, 80.0% of male subjects and 78.6% of female subjects were within normal range with the average of 22.94 ± 2.97 kg/m2 and 21.40 ± 3.06 kg/m2 respectively. None of the subjects had WHR above the cut-off point of 1.0 for men and 0.85 for women. The average energy intake for male and female was 2589 ± 687 kcal and 1959 ± 460 kcal respectively. Overall, nutrient intake of both genders fulfilled malaysia Recommended Nutrient Intake 2005 (RNI) except for the average energy intake of the female subjects. The daily physiccal activities patterns revealed that 73.6% was used for light activities, 19.7% for moderate while 7.4% for heavy activities. The average daily energy expenditure for male subjects (3161 ± 444 kcal) was higher than the female subjects (2492 ± 388 kcal). Both male and female subjects have negative energy balance of -572 kcal and -533 kcal respecttively. majority of the subjects were categorized as physically active (77.9%). Pearson correlation test showed that physical activities were positively correlated (p mI, WHR and nutrient intakes except for the intake of vitamin C. In conclusion, nutritional status and physical activity level of subjects were satisfactory.

Design and Application of a New Splitter Plate Pressure Probe for Wind Tunnel Flow measurements

A new siplitter plate presure probe was developed for flow field measurements on an airfoil with slotted flap in a low speed wind tunnel with 7 by 10 ft test section. Wind tunnel tests were conducted at a Reynolds number of 2.2 million and mach number of 0.13. The splitter plate was made of aluminum and had pressure taps on its one side. The probe can make many measurements in the plane of the plate simultaneously by using these pressure tabs. It was supported by a traversing strut in the wind tunnel and surveyed the flow field on the airfoil upper surface. measured pressures were presented by isobars of coefficients. These isobars were connected with the pressure coefficients distributed over the airfoil. Results of splitter plate pressure probe compare well with other single-point measuring probes. However, results show that no matter how small the probe, its presence in the flow causes a disturbance, especially in the highly time-dependent separated flow regions.

将自然保护区、交通和通讯不发达的边缘区、生态环境脆弱区和自然灾害多发区的农牧民,移往自然环境条件较好、公路交通及通讯发达、接近城镇的地区,不但可以改善和提高这些居民的生活水平,更重要的是对迁出区的自然生态环境保护,特别是珍稀野生动植物的生存和自然繁殖有十分积极的作用。在生态脆弱的新疆地区,通过有步骤、有计划地实施生态移民工程,无疑是解决生态退化和农牧民生活困难的最佳选择。塔里木河中、下游生态脆弱区的移民政策对缓解塔里木河中游生态质量恶化,维持下游绿色走廊生机,改善生态环境现状,提高农牧民生活水平,发展当地经济都有着积极的作用和深远的影响。本文作者于2004年5月,2006年5月和2006年10月三次对塔河中、下游地区进行实地考察,获得了第一手资料,结合前人研究的资料,阐述了塔里木河下游生态环境现状,揭示了塔里木河中、下游生态移民对维持下游绿色走廊生机,改善生态环境现状,发展当地经济中的意义。
