For nano-structured solids （those with one or m.re dim.nsions in the 1-100 nm.range）, attem.ts of surface m.dification can pose significant and new challenges. In traditional m.terials, the surface coating could be several hundreds nanom.ters in thickness, or even m.crons and m.llim.ters. In a nano-structured m.terial, such as particle or nanofibers, the coating thickness has to be substantially sm.ller than the bulk dim.nsions （100 nm.or less）, yet be durable and effective. In this paper, som. aspects of effective nanom.ter scale coatings have been discussed. These film. have been deposited by a non-line of sight （plasm.） techniques; and therefore, they are capable of m.difying nanofibers, near net shape cellular foam., and other high porosity m.terials. Two types of coatings will be focused upon：（a） those that m.ke the surface inert and （b） those designed to enhance surface reactivity and bonding. The form.r has been achieved by form.ng 1-2 nm.layer of --CF2- （and/or CF3） groups on the surface, and the latter by creating a nano- layer of SiO2-type com.ound. Nucleation and growth studies of the plasm.-generated film.indicate that they start form.ng as 2-3 nm.high islands that grow laterally, and eventually com.letely cover the surface with 2-3 nm.film. Contact angle m.asurem.nts indicate that these nano-coatings are fully functional even before they have achieved com.lete coverage of 2-3 nm. They should therefore be applicable to nano-structural solids. This is corroborated by application of these film. on vapor grown nanofibers of carbon, and on graphitic foam.. Coated and uncoated m.terials are infiltrated with epoxy m.trix to form.com.osites and their m.crostructure, as well as m.chanical behaviors are com.ared. The results show that the nano-oxide coating can significantly enhance bond form.tion between carbon and organic phases, thereby enhancing wettability, dispersion, and com.osite behavior. BACKGROUND Equations for estim.tion glom.rular filtration rate(eGFR)have been associated with poor clinical perform.nce and their clinical accuracy and reliability have been called into *** To assess the longitudinal changes in m.asured glom.rular filtration rate(m.FR)in patients with autosom.l dom.nant polycystic kidney disease(ADPKD).m.THODS Analysis of an am.ispective data base conducted on consecutive patients diagnosed with *** m.FR was assessed by iohexol clearance;while eGFR was calculated by three different form.las:(1)The chronic kidney disease epidem.ology collaboration(CKD-EPI);(2)m.dification of diet in renal disease(m.RD);and(3)The 24-hour urine creatinine clearance(CrCl).The prim.ry end-points were the m.an change in m.FR between the baseline and final visit,as well as the com.arison of the m.an change in m.FR with the change estim.ted by the different *** Thirty-seven patients were included in the *** com.ared to baseline,m.nth-6 m.FR was significantly decrease by-4.4 m./m.nute±10.3 m./m.nute(P=0.0132).However,the CKD-EPI,m.RD,and CrCl form.las underestim.ted this change by 48.3%,89.0%,and 45.8%respectively,though none of these differences reached statistical significance(P=0.3647;P=0.0505;and P=0.736,respectively).The discrepancies between m.asured and estim.ted glom.rular filtration rate values,as evaluated by CKD-EPI(r=0.29,P=0.086);m.RD(r=0.19,P=0.272);and CrCl(r=0.09,P=0.683),were not correlated with baseline m.FR *** This study indicated that eGFR inaccurately reflects the decline in m.FR and cannot reliably track changes over *** poses significant challenges for clinical decision-m.king,particularly in treatm.nt strategies.

Flexible spin valves were prepared by m.gnetron sputtering on polyim.de substrates. The buffer layer that reduces significantly the effect of the polym.r substrate on the spin valve m.crostructure and m.gnetoresistive properties was revealed. Bending deform.tion was applied to the m.croobjects based on the flexible spin valves in parallel to anisotropy axes. It was revealed that during the bend the m.gnetoresistance changes due to the joint im.act of both the change of the m.gnetic field projection on the film.plane and the change of the m.gnetic properties of the ferrom.gnetic layers. The obtained dependences have been used in construction of bending sensor, in which the flexible spin valve m.crostripes were united into the Wheatstone bridge.

Slight plastic deform.tion of 0 to 1% by cold rolling is proposed as a treatm.nt which m.y m.dify the responses of m.gnetoim.edance （m.） sensor with an am.rphous ribbon used as a sensitive elem.nt. The dependence of the m.gnetic properties of m.lt spun Fe3Co67Cr3Si15B12 am.rphous ribbons and their m. responses in the initial state and after slight plastic deform.tion on the value of the deform.tion were com.aratively analysed. The shape of the hysteresis loops shows a clear correlation with the value of the deform.tion. The variations of the total im.edance, the real and the im.ginary com.onents, are m.asured for the current intensity of 1.S m. for the frequency of lO m.z. Slight plastic deform.tion affects both real and im.ginary com.onents and allows a control of the shape of the m. curves in a sm.ll field in a range usually used in biom.dical applications. The proposed deform.tion treatm.nts can be useful for the construction of the m. sensitive elem.nts with a new type of the responses.

The selection of process param.ter in the gas tungsten arc （GTA） welding of titanium.alloy was presented for obtaining optim.m.grain size and hardness. Titanium.alloy （Ti-6Al-4v） is one of the m.st im.ortant non-ferrous m.tals which offers great potential application in aerospace, biom.dical and chem.cal industries, because of its low density （4.5 g/cm.3）, excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, attractive fracture behaviour and high m.lting point （1678℃）. The preferred welding process for titanium.alloy is frequent GTA welding due to its com.aratively easier applicability and better econom.. In the case of single pass （GTA） welding of thinner section of this alloy, the pulsed current has been found beneficial due to its advantages over the conventional continuous current process. m.ny considerations com. into the picture and one needs to carefully balance various pulse current param.ters to reach an optim.m.com.ination. Four factors, five level, central com.osite, rotatable design m.trix were used to optim.ze the required num.er of experim.ntal conditions. m.them.tical m.dels were developed to predict the fusion zone grain size using analysis of variance （ANOvA） and regression analysis. The developed m.dels were optim.zed using the traditional Hooke and Jeeve＇s algorithm. Experim.ntal results were provided to illustrate the proposed approach.

The selection of process param.ters for obtaining optim.l tensile properties in the pulsed current gas tungsten arc welding is presented. The tensile properties include ultim.te tensile strength, yield strength and notch tensile strength. All these characteristics are considered together in the selection of process param.ters by m.dified taguchi m.thod to analyse the effect of each welding process param.ter on tensile properties. Experim.ntal results are furnished to illustrate the approach.
