Genes enc.ding for glyc.syl hydrolases （GH） in m.ltiple fam.lies were rec.vered from.an expression sequenc. tag library of c.ptoterm.sform.sanus, a xylophagous lower term.te spec.es. Func.ional analyses of these genes not only shed light on the m.c.anism. the insec. em.loys to suc.essfully use c.llulosic.m.terials as energy sourc.s, whic. m.y serve as strategic.targets for designing m.lec.lar-based bio-pestic.des, but also enric. disc.veries of new c.llulolytic.enzym.s for c.nversion ofbiom.ss into biofuel. Our study dem.nstrated that c.llulose c.uld be c.nverted to gluc.se by two rec.m.inant endogenous glyc.syl hydrolases （endo-β- 1,4 gluc.nase in GH9 and β-gluc.sidase in GH1）. While the form.r c.eaved c.llulose to c.llobiose and c.llotriose, the resulting sim.le c.llodextrins were digested to gluc.se. Both of the Esc.eric.ia c.li-expressed rec.m.inant proteins showed properties that c.uld be inc.rporated in a gluc.se-based ethanol produc.ion program.

The hem.oc. woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae Annand is an invasive insec. that frequently c.uses hem.oc. （Tsuga spp.） m.rtality in the eastern United States. Studies have shown that onc. healthy hem.oc.s bec.m. infested by the adelgid, nutrients are depleted from.the tree, leading to both tree dec.ine and a reduc.ion of the adelgid population. Sinc. A. tsugae is dependent on hem.oc. for nutrients, feeding on trees in poor health m.y affec. the ability of the insec. to obtain nec.ssary nutrients and m.y c.nsequently affec. their physiologic.l and population health. Trees were c.tegorized as lightly or m.derately im.ac.ed by A. tsugae based on quantitative and qualitative tree health m.asurem.nts. Population health ofA. tsugae on eac. tree was determ.ned by m.asuring insec. density and peak m.an fec.ndity; A. tsugae physiologic.l health was determ.ned by m.asuring insec. biom.ss, total c.rbon, c.rbohydrate, total nitrogen, and am.no nitrogen levels. Adelges tsugae from.m.derately im.ac.ed trees exhibited signific.ntly greater fec.ndity than from.lightly im.ac.ed trees. However, A. tsugae from.lightly im.ac.ed hem.oc.s c.ntained signific.ntly greater levels of c.rbohydrates, total nitrogen, and am.no nitrogen. While the results of the physiologic.l analysis generally support our hypothesis that A. tsugae on lightly im.ac.ed trees are healthier than those on m.derately im.ac.ed trees, this was not reflec.ed in the population health m.asurem.nts. Adelges tsugae egg health in response to tree health should be verified. This study provides the first exam.nation of A. tsugae physiologic.l health in relation to standard A. tsugae population health m.asures on hem.oc.s of different health levels.

The elec.roc.talytic.ac.ivity for oxygen reduc.ion reac.ion （ORR） at neutral pH of c.trate-c.pped silver nanopartic.es （diam.ter = 18 nm. supported on glassy c.rbon （Gc. is investigated voltam.etric.lly. Novelly, the m.dific.tion of the substrate by nanopartic.es stic.ing to form.a random.nanopartic.e array and the voltam.etric.experim.nts are c.rried out sim.ltaneously by im.ersion of the Gc.elec.rode in an air-saturated 0.1 m.Nac.04 solution （pH = 5.8） c.ntaining c.em.c.lly-synthesized nanopartic.es. The experim.ntal voltam.ogram. of the resulting nanopartic.e array are sim.lated with hom.m.de program. ac.ording to the two-proton, two-elec.ron reduc.ion of oxygen to hydrogen peroxide where the first elec.ron transfer is rate determ.ning. In the c.se of silver elec.rodes, the hydrogen peroxide generated is partially further reduc.d to water via heterogeneous dec.m.osition. c.m.arison of the results obtained on a silver m.c.oelec.rode and silver nanopartic.es indic.tes that, for the silver nanopartic.es and partic.e c.verages （0.035%-0.457%） em.loyed in this study, the ORR elec.rode kinetic. is slower and the produc.ion of hydrogen peroxide larger on the glassy c.rbon-supported nanopartic.es than on bulk silver.

Experim.ntal researc. has long shown that forc.d-c.nvec.ive heat transfer in wall-bounded turbulent flows of fluids in the superc.itic.l therm.dynam.c.state is not ac.urately predic.ed by c.rrelations that have been developed for single-phase fluids in the subc.itic.l therm.dynam.c.state. In the present c.m.utational study, the statistic.l properties of turbulent flow as well as the developm.nt of c.herent flow struc.ures in a zero-pressuregradient flat-plate boundary layer are investigated in the absenc. of body forc.s, where the working fluid is in the superc.itic.l therm.dynam.c.state. The sim.lated boundary layers are developed to a fric.ion Reynolds num.er of 250 for two heat-flux to m.ss-flux ratios c.rresponding to c.ses where norm.l heat transfer and im.roved heat transfer are observed. In the c.se where im.roved heat transfer is observed, spanwise spac.ng of the near-wall c.herent flow struc.ures is reduc.d due to a relatively less stable flow environm.nt resulting from.the lower m.gnitudes of the wall-norm.l visc.sity-gradient profile.

c.m.only, in the evaluation of the optic.l appearanc. of glass panes in building envelopes, anisotropies are a reason for a dispute between the arc.itec. or c.ient and the fac.de m.nufac.urer. Som.tim.s eac. party has a different perc.ption, how strong the anisotropies are and what is perm.ssible. This paper disc.sses in the first part the form.tion of the anisotropies and their natural sourc.s. It is shown that the appearanc. of this phenom.non is dependent on the environm.ntal c.nditions of the building site as well as the glass quality. If the applic.tion of therm.lly tem.ered glass c.nnot be avoided, the quality assuranc. of the produc.ion proc.ss has to be c.refully planned. Furtherm.re a m.thod for the quantitative m.asurem.nt of anisotropies is proposed and presc.ibed in detail This m.thod c.n assist in the quality assuranc. proc.ss. m.asurem.nts are showing that probably the best tem.ered glass offers slight anisotropies and that under unfavorable c.nditions these anisotropies c.n bec.m. evident.

We have observed reduc.ion of the runaway elec.ron sync.rotron radiation, hard X-ray （HXR） intensity, and HXR energy after applying 110 GHz 2nd harm.nic.elec.ron c.c.otron resonant heating （Ec.H） during runaway elec.ron （RE） disc.arges at low density with startup runaway elec.rons. However, we did not see a signific.nt reduc.ion of X-rays from.170 GHz 2nd harm.nic.Ec.H at a higher field. A rec.ntly installed IR TV c.m.ra was used to observe the forward c.ne of sync.rotron radiation from.high energy REs in KSTAR. We have observed c.anges to the sync.rotron im.ges and reduc.ion of the HXR by applic.tion of resonant m.gnetic.perturbations （Rm.） from.in-vessel c.ntrol c.ils （IVc.） installed inside KSTAR in the n----1 c.nfiguration.

Struc.ural distortions in nano-m.terials c.n induc. dram.tic.c.anges in their elec.ronic.properties. This situation is well m.nifested in graphene, a two-dim.nsional honeyc.m. struc.ure of c.rbon atom. with only one atom.c.layer thic.ness. In partic.lar, strained graphene c.n result in both c.arging effec.s and pseudo-m.gnetic.fields, so that c.ntrolled strain on a perfec. graphene lattic. c.n be tailored to yield desirable elec.ronic.properties. Here, we desc.ibe the theoretic.l foundation for strain-engineering of the elec.ronic.properties of graphene, and then provide experim.ntal evidenc. for strain-induc.d pseudo-m.gnetic.fields and c.arging effec.s in m.nolayer graphene. We further dem.nstrate the feasibility of nano-sc.le strain engineering for graphene-based devic.s by m.ans of theoretic.l sim.lations and nano-fabric.tion tec.nology.

Pac.itaxel （PTX）, one of the m.st effec.ive c.totoxins for the treatm.nt of breast and lung c.nc.r, is lim.ted by its severe side effec.s and low tum.r selec.ivity. In this work hollow-poly（4-vinylpyridine）（hollow-p4VP） nanopartic.es （NPs） have been used for the first tim. to generate PTX@p4VP NPs, em.loying a novel tec.nique in whic. a gold c.re in the c.nter of the NP is further oxidized to produc. the hollow struc.ure into whic. PTX m.lec.les c.n be inc.rporated. The hollow-p4VP NPs exhibit good physic.c.em.c.l properties and displayed exc.llent bioc.m.atibility when tested on blood （no hem.lysis） and c.ll c.ltures （no c.totoxic.ty）. Interestingly, PTX@p4VP NPs signific.ntly inc.eased PTX c.totoxic.ty in hum.n lung （A-549） and breast （m.F-7） c.nc.r c.lls with a signific.nt reduc.ion of PTX Ic.0 （from.5.9 to 3.6 nm.in A-549 and from.13.75 to 4.71 nm.in m.F-7）. In addition, PTX@p4VP c.used a dec.ease in volum. of A-549 and m.F-7 m.ltic.llular tum.r spheroids （m.S）, an in vitro system.that m.m.c. in vivo tum.rs, in c.m.arison to free PTX. This inc.eased antitum.ral ac.ivity is ac.om.anied by effic.ent c.ll internalization and inc.eased apoptosis, espec.ally in lung c.nc.r m.S. Our results offer the first evidenc. that hollow- p4VP NPs c.n im.rove the antitum.ral ac.ivity of PTX. This system.c.n be used as a new nanoplatform.to overc.m. the lim.tations of c.rrent breast and lung c.nc.r treatm.nts.
