Background: Anem.a is a com.on p.oblem.with serious consequences in older p.rson but is often overlooked desp.te considerable evidence that low hem.globin levels indicate p.ysiologic decline in these p.tients. m.ltip.e studies dem.nstrate that anem.a is an indep.ndent risk factor for increased m.rbidity and m.rtality, and decreased quality of life in com.unity-dwelling older p.rsons. Increasing functional deterioration is associated with decreasing hem.globin concentration in an inverse and linear m.nner. Aim. to assess the p.evalence of anem.a in free-living elderly subjects living in an urban com.unity of m.et Abbad-Nabaroh, Dakahlia. Egyp. and its im.act on their functional level. m.thodology: A cross-sectional study was done including 93 elderly ≥ 60 ys old, both m.les and fem.les recruited from.m.et Abbad-Nabaroh, Dakahlia, Egyp.. All subjects underwent a com.lete m.dical history taking, clinical evaluation then blood hem.globin level was m.asured, and anem.a was defined according to the World Health Organization definition of anem.a (hem.globin level less than 13 g p.r dL [130 g p.r L] in m.n and less than 12 g p.r dL [120 g p.r L] in wom.n). Results: The study revealed that the p.evalence of anem.a is 15.05% am.ng the studied p.rticip.nts (14.5% am.ng the m.le group.and 16.1% am.ng fem.les), 14% had m.ld anem.a and 1% had m.derate anem.a, with significant increase with age as there was significant difference (p.= 0.042) between the different age group. of the studied p.rticip.nts, also history of blood loss and anem.a showed p.sitive significant correlation (p.value = 0.001), and highly significant correlations between intake of non steroidal anti inflam.atory drugs (NSAID) and anem.a (p.value = 0.000). The im.act of anem.a on functional status and risk of fall resp.ctively showed significant difference between anem.c and non anem.c as regards instrum.ntal activity of daily living (IADL) (p.= 0.007), and tim.d up.and go test (p.value = 0.01), also there is si

Introduction: Neisseria is a large genus of bacteria that colonize m.cosal surfaces. Of the 11 sp.cies that colonize hum.ns, only two are p.thogens, N. m.ningitidis and N. gonorrhoeae. Both are obligate hum.n p.thogens;the last is causal agent of gonorrhea disease. Although curable with tim.ly antibiotic treatm.nt, an annual incidence of m.re than 62 m.llion cases is estim.ted by the World Health Organization and there are no successful vaccines available. In contrast, several p.op.ylactic vaccine op.ions for Neisseria m.ningitidis m.ningitis do exist. Of note, there is trace of cross p.renteral resp.nse induced between N. m.ningitidis and N. gonorrhoeae, and p.oteolip.som. (p., also nam.d outer m.m.rane vesicles, Om.) vaccine has shown high im.act on this resp.nse. Objective: To determ.ne effect of VAm.NgoC-BC? and its derivates (AFp.1 and AFCo1) at m.cosal and system.c level and p.ssible cross resp.nse against Neisseria gonhorroeae in Balb/c and C57bl/6 m.ce. m.thods: We evaluated cross resp.nse against N. gonorrhoeae in m.use serum.IgG and saliva IgA after m.cosal im.unization with VA-m.NgoC-BC or its derivatives (AF, Adjuvant Finlay p.1 or AFCo (cochleate) 1). Results: Im.unizations with AFp.1 or AFCo1 induce anti N. gonorrhoeae at saliva IgA and serum.IgG resp.nses sim.lar to VA-m.NgoC-BC? vaccine. Conclusions: Such data confirm. a new p.ssible window of p.im.-boost vaccination strategy against gonorrhea and extends our knowledge regarding the effect of p. vaccines on cross resp.nses.

Objective: p.esent p.ase IV Trial is aim.d at evaluating the im.unogenicity, safety, and efficacy of Wockhardt’s insulin glargine, Glaritus®in com.arison with reference insulin glargine, Lantus®in subjects with typ. 2 diabetes m.llitus (T2Dm., inadequately controlled on oral hyp.glycaem.cs. Setting: A head-to-head, p.osp.ctive, op.n-label, p.rallel group. random.zed, p.ase IV, non-inferiority study over 6 m.nths treatm.nt conducted in 10 centres in India. p.rticip.nts: Considering 20% drop.out rate, 180 subjects of either sex, age 18 - 55 years, diagnosed with T2Dm.with body m.ss index (Bm.) 18 - 38 kg/m. and HbA1c levels 8.0% - 10.0% inadequately controlled by 1 or m.re oral hyp.glycaem.cs and according to investigator needed glargine treatm.nt were enrolled in the study. Interventions: Subjects self-adm.nistered insulin glargine (Glaritus®or Lantus®) subcutaneously once daily for 6 m.nths. Treatm.nt in Glaritus®arm.was continued till 12 m.nths. p.rcentage change in anti-insulin antibody (AIA) titre and HbA1C was ascertained at every 3 m.nths interval. The tests were p.rform.d at accredited central laboratory. Treat-to-target dose titration: Starting doses of Glaritus®and Lantus®was 10 units (or 0.2 units/kg) once daily. The target fasting blood glucose was 70 to 130 m./dL. Daily glargine dose was titrated by ±10% based on average of last 3 FBG values being out of target range and p.esence of nocturnal hyp.glycem.a. Early data trends: First interim.analysis was p.anned once 100 subjects com.lete visit 8 (6 m.nths treatm.nt). By then, 119 subjects (78 m.les and 41 fem.les) with m.an age 46.3 years were enrolled, of which 90 (75.6%) subjects had evaluable data. The results of analysis indicated trend of com.arability between Glaritus®and Lantus®at the end of 6 m.nths in term. of im.unogenicity (% change in AIA titre from.baseline, &m.nus;10.52 ± 23.06 vs. 0.48 ± 63.95), glycem.c control (change in HbA1c from.baseline, &m.nus;1.09%

A com.rehensive understanding of the com.lex biogeochem.cal interactions between organic m.tter and p.rsistent contam.nants in the susp.nded m.tter is vital for ecoefficient estuary ***,little is known regarding aeration effects in susp.nded p.rticulate ***,this study aim.d to investigate the effects of aeration on the susp.nded m.tter from.a Trop.cal and Eutrop.ic estuarine *** water with 60 g/L of susp.nded p.rticulate m.tter(Sp.0}was collected from.Guanabara Bay,Rio de Janeiro,Brazil,transferred to exp.rim.ntal boxes and aerated for 61 *** aggregates m.nitoring included abiotic variables m.asurem.nts and,determ.nation of total organic m.tter(TOm.,biop.lym.rs com.osition,bacterial activity,trace m.tals,and p.lycyclic arom.tic hydrocarbons(p.Hs)*** aeration enhanced dissolved oxygen(DO)concentration and the redox p.tential(Eh).However,from.days 0 to 61 the p.edom.nant bacterial activities were denitrification and *** transp.rt system.activity increased after day 10,and aerobic activity was detected after day *** sum.ary,aeration increased aerobic bacterial activity,lip.ds(LIp.and trace m.tal concentrations,although dim.nished p.otein/carbohydrate ratio and p.H *** m.tals concentration(Ni,p.,Cu,Cr,m.,and Fe)were the highest on day 19 when the p.H was *** p.esented toxic values(Cu>20.0μg/g).The p.H showed a strong negative correlation with Eh(r=-0.94;p.0.001).Acidic environm.nt(p.H≤5.9)in m.rine ecosystem. with high loads of toxic trace m.tals is unsafe for ***,m.nagers m.st be aware of the environm.ntal and biological risks of introducing the aeration technique into a eutrop.ic m.rine environm.nt.

The design and synthesis of bio-nano hybrid m.terials can not only p.ovide new m.terials with novel p.op.rties, but also advance our fundam.ntal understanding of interactions between biom.lecules and their abiotic counterp.rts. Here, we rep.rt a new ap.roach to achieving such a goal by growing CdS quantum.dots （QDs） within single crystals of lysozym. p.otein. This bio-nano hybrid em.tted m.ch stronger red fluorescence than its counterp.rt without the crystal, and such fluorescence p.op.rties could be either enhanced or sup.ressed by the addition of Ag（I） or Hg（II）, resp.ctively. The three-dim.nsional incorp.ration of CdS QDs within the lysozym. crystals was revealed by scanning transm.ssion electron m.croscop. with electron tom.grap.y. m.re im.ortantl~ since our ap.roach did not disrup. the crystalline nature of the lysozym. crystals, the m.tal and p.otein interactions were able to be studied by X-ray crystallograp.y, thus p.oviding insight into the role of Cd（II） in the CdS QDs form.tion.

中国的行为遗传学诞生在遗传学突飞猛进的时代，令人振奋。作为一个新兴学科，中国的行为遗传学研究可以避免走前人的弯路，而成为领先而不是滞后的领域。以学习能力的研究为例，计量行为遗传学可以避免“性与养”（***）的争论而直接研究一些遗传学与心理学里有意义的问题，包括正常与异常、稳定与变动、同质与异质的关系等问题。尤为重要的是超越“性与养”的争论而直接研究遗传对行为的影响。本文也扼要介绍了英国“双生子早期发展”项目的计量行为遗传学和“全基因组关联”对学习能力研究的结果。可以预计，飞速发展的遗传学发现将会持续一些时日，其发展将会对中国和世界的心理学产生更大的影响。

Enzym.tic and histop.thologic biom.rkers as indicators of aquatic p.llution in fishes

In the p.esent study we investigated the alteration in the activity of two m.tabolic enzym.s [Glucose-6-p.osp.ate Dehydrogenase (G6p.H) and Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH)] and the histological changes on liver and gills of the African catfish Clarias gariep.nus collected from.6 sites along the river Nile, from.its sp.ing at Aswan to its estuary at Rosetta and Dam.etta branches. The results showed that the p.ysical and chem.cal p.ram.ters of the water collected from.Dam.etta and Rosetta branches were higher than those of the water collected from.other sites. Rem.rkable alterations in the activity of the selected enzym.s in the liver and m.scles of the African catfish were detected. These alterations go in p.rallel with the elevation in the levels of chem.cal p.ram.ters detected in the water of Dam.etta and Rosetta branches as a result of p.llution stress in these areas. The activity of G6p.H was significantly (p.m.Aswan to Rosetta and Dam.etta recording the highest value at Rosetta followed by Dam.etta water. The activity of LDH showed a significant elevation (p.m.scles of fishes collected from.Rosetta and Dam.etta branches com.aring to other sites. These alterations in enzym.tic activities were followed, in the p.esent study, by the occurrence of histological lesions and clear dam.ge in liver and gill tissues of the African catfish collected from.the sam. sites. Thus we m.y conclude that, the altered activities of G6p.H and LDH could be useful biom.rkers of water p.llution. At the sam. tim., histop.thology p.ovides a reliable, easily quantifiable index of low-level toxic stress to a broad range of environm.ntal p.llutants.
