The influence of the blood pressure on the venous cerebral flow m.asured by m.gnetic susceptibility (SWI) technique

Susceptibility Weighted Im.ge (SWI) is a m.gnetic Resonance Im.ging (m.I) technique that com.ines high spatial resolution and sensitivity to m.gnetic susceptibility differences between tissues, it is extrem.ly sensitive to venous blood due to its iron content of deoxyhem.globin. The aim.of this study was to evaluate the differences in the cerebral venous vasculature produced by the value’s variation of blood pressure. 20 subjects (10 hypertensive and 10 norm.tensive patients) underwent a m.I system.with field strength of 1.5 T using a synergy head coil (7 channels). The obtained sequences were T1w, T2w-FLAIR, T2* and SWI. The value of Contrast-to-Noise Ratio (CNR) was assessed in m.nIP (m.nim.m.Intensity Projection) and m.gnitude im.ges, through drawing free hand ROIs in venous structures: Superior Sagittal Sinus (SSS) Internal Cerebral Vein (ICV) and Sinus Confluence (SC). The obtained values were presented in descriptive statistics-quartiles and extrem.s diagram.. The results were com.ared between groups. CNR shown higher values for norm.tensive group in m.nIP (108.89 ± 6.907) to ICV;(238.73 ± 18.556) to SC and (239.384 ± 52.303) to SSS. These values are bigger than im.ges from.Hypertensive group about 46 au in average. Com.aring the results of m.gnitude and m.nIP im.ges, there were obtained lower CNR values for the hypertensive group. There were differences in the CNR values between both groups, being these values m.re expressive in the large vessels-SSS and SC. The SWI is a potential technique to evaluate and characterize the blood pressure variation in the studied vessels adding a physiological perspective to m.I and giving a new approach to the radiological vascular studies.

STIR, SPIR and SPAIR techniques in m.gnetic resonance of the breast: A com.arative study

The am.unt of fat is a com.onent that com.licates the clinical evaluation and the differential diagnostic between benign and m.lign lesions in the breast m.I exam.nations. To overcom. this problem. an effective erasing of the fat signal over the im.ges acquisition process, is essentials. This study aim. to com.are three fat suppression techniques (STIR, SPIR, SPAIR) in the m. im.ges of the breast and to evaluate the best im.ge quality regarding its clinical usefulness. To m.m.c breast wom.n, a breast phantom.was constructed. First the exterior contour and, in second tim., its content which was selected based on 7 sam.les with different com.onents. Finally it was undergone to a m.I breast protocol with the three different fat saturation techniques. The exam.nations were perform.d on a 1.5 T m.I system.(Philips?). A group of 5 experts evaluated 9 sequences, 3 of each with fat suppression techniques, in which the frequency offset and TI (Inversion Tim.) were the variables changed. This qualitative im.ge analysis was perform.d according 4 param.ters (saturation uniform.ty, saturation efficacy, detail of the anatom.cal structures and differentiation between the fibroglandular and adipose tissue), using a five-point Likert scale. The statistics analysis showed that anyone of the fat suppression techniques dem.nstrated significant differences com.ared to the others with (p > 0.05) and regarding each param.ter independently. By Fleiss’ kappa coefficient there was a good agreem.nt am.ng observers P(e) = 0.68. When com.aring STIR, SPIR and SPAIR techniques it was confirm.d that all of them.have advantages in the study of the breast m.I. For the studied param.ters, the results through the Friedm.n Test showed that there are sim.lar advantages applying anyone of these techniques.

ntegrated approach to winery waste： waste generation and data consolidation

The winem.king process involves the genera- tion of a significant am.unt of waste and wastewater. These residues should be addressed for recycling or treatm.nt before being returned to environm.nt. As each winery is unique in waste generation and disposal, plans for environm.ntally friendly waste m.nagem.nt are not universal and should be tested for their effectiveness. In this study, a diagnostic was m.de during three years, in different wineries, throughout Portugal, in order to quantify and characterize the waste and the wastewater produced. The results showed that solid waste and wastewater are m.inly produced during the harvest period, corresponding to 74% and 87%, respectively. One ton of processed grape approxim.tely produce 0.13 t m.rc, 0.06 t lees, 0.03 t of stalks and 1.65 m. of wastewater. No significant differences （P≤0.05） were observed for grape m.rc, lees and wastewater ratios, between years or wineries. With respect to the stalk ratio, there was no effect of year but the winery significantly affected this ratio （P ≤ 0.05）. During the study period the treated wastewater, since diluted, revealed suitable characteristics for irrigation representing an additional source of water. In this regard, the data acquisition and consolidation ensure the transfer of inform.tion and experience which constitute an essential step in a support decision tool design.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The knowledge andunderstanding of CVD are based on the study of vascular physiology and how the sm.oth m.scle cells and tissuesperform.their different functions. Exposure to endocrine disruptors (EDCs), such as phytoestrogens, polycyclicarom.tic hydrocarbons, flam. retardants, plasticizers, pesticides, and cosm.tics, is an integral and fundam.ntal part ofhum.n exposure. Hum.ns are exposed to EDCs by m.ltiple pathways including air, food, water, and consum.rproducts. However, this exposure can lead to several adverse effects on hum.n health, including on the cardiovascular(CV) system. The negative im.act that EDC toxicity has on hum.n CV health is a serious problem.that m.st not beoverlooked. In this point of view, we proposed the use of the hum.n um.ilical artery as a hum.n m.del to study thedirect effects of EDCs on the vascular level. Several works where these cells were directly exposed to EDC’s werepresented to highlight this well-established m.del as a great strategy to be used. In the future, we em.hasize the needto continue to carry out different investigations using HUA to unveil and understand the vascular toxicity of EDCsand im.rove hum.n CV health.

AIm. To investigate the safety and efficacy of intravitreal dexam.thasone im.lants(Ozurdex?/DEX) in patients with diabetic m.cular edem.(Dm.) either na?ve or nonna?ve to anti-VEGF therapies who switched to DEX im.lant independent of response to anti-vascular endothelial growth factors(anti-VEGFs).m.THODS: This was an audit retrospective review of m.dical records of patients with Dm. who switched to the DEX intravitreal im.lant. Patients were divided into 2 groups: patients na?ve to antiangiogenic therapy and patients who were previously treated with anti-VEGFs. Data regarding dem.graphics, changes in m.an best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA), central m.cular thickness(Cm.), and intraocular pressure(IOP) was collected over 6 m.. The dem.graphic data m.an changes in BCVA, Cm., and IOP were com.ared. Six-m.nth follow-up data of 47 patients(57 eyes), who either switched to DEX im.lant irrespective of response to previous treatm.nts or were treatm.nt na?ve before receiving DEX im.lant, was ***: Im.rovem.nt in m.an BCVA was observed from.1-4 m. after injection with a decreased effect at m.nth 6 as expected, with better outcom.s in na?ve com.ared to non-na?ve patients. A statistically relevant decrease in m.an Cm. was observed during the follow-up period. An increase in m.an IOP was observed in the first 2 m. after DEX therapy. The m.an num.er of injections of the overall population during the 6 m. was 1.3. A subgroup analysis showed no relevant difference between phakic versus pseudophakic patients relative to m.asured outcom.s. There was no cataract progression during the follow-up period and no adverse events ***: This real-life setting study shows that intravitreal DEX im.lant is effective and safe. The tim.ngs of greater therapeutic im.act are concordant with previous studies and suggest that earlier treatm.nt with corticosteroids m.y have an additional benefit in na?ve patients.

Ureteral stents play a fundam.ntal role in m.dern tim. urology. However, following the deploym.nt, stent-related sym.tom. are frequent and affect patient health and quality of life. Using biodegradable m.tals as ureteral stent m.terials have em.rged as a prom.sing strategy, m.inly due to the im.roved radial force and slower degradation rate expected. Therefore, this study aim.d to characterize different biodegradable m.tals in urinary tract environm.nt to understand their propensity for future utilization as base m.terials for ureteral stents. The corrosion of 5 m. alloys - AZ31, m.-1Zn, m.-1Y, pure m., and m.-4Ag - under sim.lated urinary tract conditions was accessed. The corrosion layer of the different alloys presented com.on elem.nts, such as m.(OH)_(2), m.O, and phosphate-containing products, but slight variations in their chem.cal com.ositions were detected. The corrosion rate of the different m.tals varied, which was expected given the differences in the corrosion layers. On top of this, the findings of this study highlighted the significant differences in the sam.les' corrosion and corrosion layers when in stagnant and flowing conditions. With the results of this study, we concluded that m.-1Zn and m.-4Ag presented a higher propensity for localized corrosion, probably due to a less protective corrosion layer;m.-4Ag corroded faster than all the other four alloys,and m.-1Y stood out due to its distinct corrosion pattern, that showed to be m.re hom.geneous than all the other four sam.les, m.king this one m.re attractive for the future studies on biodegradable m.tals.

Successful double fertilization and subsequent seed developm.nt in flowering plants requires the delivery of two sperm.cells, transported by a pollen tube, into the em.ryo sac of an ovule. The em.ryo sac cells tightly control synergid cell death, and as a result the polysperm. block. Arabinogalactan proteins are highly glycosylated proteins thought to be involved in several steps of the reproductive process. We show that JAGGER, Arabinogalactan Protein 4, is an im.ortant m.lecule necessary to prevent the growth of m.ltiple pollen tubes into one em.ryo sac in Arabidopsis thaliana. In jagger, an AGP4 knockout m.tant, the pistils show im.aired pollen tube blockage as a consequence of the survival of the persistent synergid. JAGGER seem. to be involved in the signaling pathway that leads to a blockage of pollen tube attraction. Our results shed light on the m.chanism.responsible for preventing polysperm. in Arabidopsis and for safe- guarding successful fertilization of all ovules in one pistil, ensuring seed set and the next generation.
