This work is an attem.t to critically analyze the existing theoretical m.dels of the im.act of earthquake preparation processes on the state of the earth’s atm.sphere and ionosphere in the zone of growing seism.c activity, as well as the m.chanism. of form.tion and transfer of disturbances in various m.dia over the earthquake center. The determ.ning factor (criterion) of the analysis is the degree of com.liance of the sim.lation results with experim.ntal data obtained at various phases of earthquake developm.nt by direct and rem.te diagnostic m.thods using ground and aerospace technologies. The key role is played by the m.del’s com.liance with the results of m.asuring electric fields and currents in the near-ground atm.sphere and ionosphere, sm.ll-scale ionospheric inhom.geneities and correlated field-aligned currents and electrom.gnetic ULF/ELF em.ssions. A full-fledged m.del should also explain the origin of such seism.c related phenom.na as the generation in the troposphere and over-horizon propagation of pulsed VHF radiation, therm.l effects and associated IR em.ssions as well as the m.dification of plasm. distribution in the D, E and F layers of the ionosphere. The use of this criterion in the analysis allowed us to identify a theoretical m.del that m.st fully describes the totality of the above-m.ntioned experim.ntal data within a single physical m.chanism. This is an electrodynam.c m.del based on the perturbation of the conductivity current in the global atm.sphere—ionosphere electric circuit due to the injection of charged aerosols into the atm.sphere during the preparation and developm.nt of an earthquake. The present paper describes this m.del and the form.tion m.chanism. of related phenom.na in the atm.sphere and ionosphere, which can be considered as short-term.precursors to earthquakes.

Phototropism.represents a differential growth response by which plant organs can respond adaptively to changes in the direction of incident light to optim.ze leaf/stem.positioning for photosynthetic light capture and root growth orientation for water/nutrient acquisition. Studies over the past few years have identified a num.er of com.o- nents in the signaling pathway（s） leading to developm.nt of phototropic curvatures in hypocotyls. These include the pho- totropin photoreceptors （photl and phot2） that perceive directional blue-light （BL） cues and then stim.late signaling, leading to relocalization of the plant horm.ne auxin, as well as the auxin response factor NPH4/ARF7 that responds to changes in local auxin concentrations to directly m.diate expression of genes likely encoding proteins necessary for developm.nt of phototropic curvatures, While null m.tations in NPH4/ARF7 condition an aphototropic response to unidirectional BL, seedlings carrying the sam. m.tations recover BL-dependent phototropic responsiveness if coirradiated with red light （RL） or pre-treated with either ethylene. In the present study, we identify second-site enhancer m.tations in the nph4 background that abrogate these recovery responses. One of these m.tations-m.pl （m.difier of arf7 phenotypes 1）-was found to represent a m.ssense allele of AUX1-a gene encoding a high-affinity auxin influx carrier previously associated with a num.er of root responses. Pharm.cological studies and analyses of additional auxl m.tants confirm.d that AUX1 functions as a m.dulator of hypocotyl phototropism. m.reover, we have found that the strength of dependence of hypocotyl phototropism.on AUX1-m.diated auxin influx is directly related to the auxin responsiveness of the seedling in question.

The m.in objective of the present study was to m.del the kinetics of essential oil extraction from.swelled ground juniper berries by classic hydrodistillation(HD) and m.crowave-assisted hydrodistillation(m.HD). A new phenom.nological kinetic m.del was developed on the basis of the juniper essential oil extraction m.chanism.that assum.d three m.ss transfer processes occurring sim.ltaneously: washing, unhindered diffusion and hindered diffusion. The new m.del was com.ared to the existing kinetic m.dels. Am.ng the tested m.dels,the new m.del had the sm.llest m.an relative percentage deviation and the highest corrected Akaike inform.tion criterion value. In addition, that, the new m.del was verified for HD and m.HD of essential oils from.som. other plant m.terials. On the basis of the above-m.ntioned facts, the new m.del can be recom.ended for m.deling the kinetics of essential oil extraction by both HD and m.HD.

The problem.of analytical study of the m.D effect through a porous m.dium.of the non-isotherm.l flow of a non-Newtonian power law lubricant through the gap of conical bearing through a porous m.dium.when an external m.gnetic field is applied. At first, the m.re general basic equations of m.tion, continuity and energy in curvilinear form.in the width direction are derived. Then, as a special case, a conical bearing gap is considered. By integrating a m.dified form.of Reynolds equation, the bearing characteristics for a non-Newtonian power law lubricant when an external m.gnetic field is applied through a porous m.dium.are obtained. Num.rical results were presented in each of these form.: pressure, tem.erature and capacity of the conical bearing. The effects of the param.ters of the non-Newtonian power law, m.gnetic field and porous m.dium.are shown and discussed.

Population-based study of health service deficits in US adults with depression: Does chronic disease co-m.rbidity and/or rural residency m.ke a difference?

Introduction: Rural residents are at higher risk for a depressive disorder than their non-rural counterparts. Recent research has indicated that co-m.rbidities are also associated with depression. Health service deficits (HSDs) is an analytic concept that facilitates the exam.nation of how a population uses health services relevant to their condition. A HSD is present when, over the preceding 12 m.nths, an individual has had no health insurance, no specified health care provider, deferred m.dical care due to cost, or did not have a routine m.dical exam. Research has shown a high prevalence of HSDs in populations with individual chronic conditions. No study that we know of has exam.ned if there is an association between the constellation of chronic conditions of depression and the co-m.rbidities of asthm., arthritis, and diabetes, with HSDs. m.thods: 2011 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) data were analyzed to identify im.ortant dim.nsions of the epidem.ology of depression by ascertaining whether there were differences in the prevalence of health service deficits in rural versus non-rural adults with depression and at least one additional chronic disease (arthritis, asthm., or diabetes). Data analyses entailed both bivariate and m.ltivariate techniques. All analyses were perform.d on weighted data. Results: Logistic regression analysis perform.d using the presence of at least one HSD as the dependent variable yielded that for US adults with lifetim. depression those who were African Am.rican, Hispanic and other/m.ltiracial in com.arison to Caucasian had higher odds of having at least one health service deficit. Low socioeconom.c status (SES) and m.ddle SES in com.arison to high SES were also risk factors for US adults with lifetim. depression having at least one HSD. This paper presents a new practical fram.work for evaluating reliability levels associated with power system.supply-dem.nd balance. The fram.work has been developed as part of a recent m.jor industry-supported research and developm.nt study. The novel fram.work is based on three m.taphors (dim.nsions) representing the relationship between available generation capacities and required dem.nd levels. The first m.taphor defines whether or not the capacity exists, the second m.taphor defines whether or not the capacity is needed, and the last m.taphor defines whether or not the capacity can reach (delivered to) the dem.nd. The eight possible com.inations associated with the 0/1 (Yes/No) values of the three m.taphors would, in turn, define a set of powerful system.wide perform.nce quality m.asures relating to generation deficiency, redundancy, bottling, etc. Practical applications to a portion of the Saudi power grid are also presented for dem.nstration purposes. The work of the paper constitutes a new line of research in system.reliability assessm.nt where the derived system.wide perform.nce quality indices are capable of addressing and revealing areas of deficiencies and bottlenecks as well as redundancies in the com.osite generation- dem.nd structure of large-scale power grids. In addition, the sensitivities of the perform.nce quality indices with respect to variations in the system.operating param.ters represent powerful inform.tion, which can be used to assess the level of degradation in the reliability m.asure or the perform.nce quality index under consideration.

The sequence of Gidl （a gene for a gibberellin （GA） receptor from.rice） was used to identify a putative orthologue from.barley. This was expressed in E. coil, and produced a protein that was able to bind GA in vitro with both structural specificity and saturability. Its potential role in GA responses was investigated using barley m.tants with reduced GA sensitivity （gsel m.tants）. Sixteen different gsel m.tants each carried a unique nucleotide substitution in this sequence. In all but one case, these changes resulted in single am.no acid substitutions, and, for the rem.ining m.tant, a substitution in the 5＇ untranslated region of the m.NA is proposed to interfere with translation initiation. There was perfect linkage in segregating populations between new m.tant alleles and the gsel phenotype, leading to the conclusion that the putative GID1 GA receptor sequence in barley corresponds to the Gsel locus. Determ.nation of endogenous GA contents in one of the m.tants revealed enhanced accum.lation of bioactive GA1, and a deficit of C20 GA precursors. All of the gsel m.tants had reduced sensitivity to exogenous GA3, and to AC94377 （a GA analogue） at concentrations that are norm.lly ＇saturating＇, but, at m.ch higher concentrations, there was often a considerable response. The com.arison between barley and rice m.tants reveals interesting differences between these two cereal species in GA horm.nal physiology.
