m.deling of Groundwater Regim. Changes That m.y be Caused by Building of Transportation Tunnel in Riga, Latvia

The publication is devoted to num.rical m.deling of changes in groundwater regim. that m.y happen during and after building of the 7 km.long and 50 m.deep underground transportation tunnel in Riga. There are two kinds of changes: the ones caused by the tunnel im.erm.able body and by harm.ul effects that m.y happen during the process of building, for exam.le, im.acts of open deep construction trenches. To estim.te possible after effects caused by the tunnel and the trenches, the hydrogeological m.del has been created. Its plane size is 3,500 ×8,000 m.and the plane approxim.tion step is 10 m. m.del contains twelve grid planes accounting for com.lex geological structure of the place and the tunnel geom.try. By com.aring results provided by the undisturbed (no tunnel) and disturbed m.dels, the change of the groundwater regim. was found. It contained changes of groundwater heads and flows as hydraulic gradients and m.teoric infiltration. These changes were sm.ll and the tunnel itself should cause practically no disturbance of groundwater regim.. By m.deling possible versions of watertight walls for trenches, it was found that deep wrongly built construction trenches m.y cause considerable harm.by lowering groundwater table at the trench surroundings.

Large and com.lex construction projects lace risk trom.various sources and the successlul com.letion of such projects depends on effective risk m.nagem.nt. This study investigates the risk faced by Chinese firm. participating in constructing AP 1000 nuclear power plants in China. AP 1000 nuclear reactors are new, Generation III＋ reactors designed by Westinghouse and to be built first in China. The sem.-structured interview approach is used to elicit inform.tion from.experts involved in the AP1000 projects in China. Based on the interviews, various sources of risk are identified. In addition to general risks that m.gaprojects norm.lly face, there are unique risks that arise from.various sources such as technological, political, organizational, and individual personnel risks. Risk m.nagem.nt strategies are proposed to m.nage general and unique risks identified in the study. The findings of this study would be helpful for Chinese com.anies involved in the construction of AP 1000 nuclear power plants to m.tigate the risks associated with the projects.
