Background: Metabolic acidosis (MA) is a common finding on the surgical ward, more so in the intensive care unit. Diseases affecting the major organ systems of the body and higher grades of surgery are common risk factors for MA. It is associated with poor treatment outcome. Aim: To determine the risk factors and clinical correlates of metabolic acidosis and assess its relationship with treatment outcome. Methodology: A retrospective study at the “Tristate Heart and vascular Center” in Ilishan-Remo South west Nigeria, on patients that had cardiac and vascular surgeries from January 2015 to December 2019. Three hundred and forty two participants took part in the study. The demographic, clinical and laboratory findings were entered. Statistical analysis was with Student’s t-test and Chi square. An investigation into the type of fermentation oil palm fruit waste undergoes and the probable microorganisms involved within a short period was carried out using simple fermenter. The temperature was determined using mercury thermometer, the pH of the medium was monitored with calibrated pH meter and the titratable acidic was determined using standard technique. The microbial profile of the medium was also evaluated using standard procedures. The highest temperature value was observed at day 0 (32.65°C) and the lowest at day 1 (29.50°C). The pH values of the fermentation oil palm fruit waste ranged between 4.15 - 4.60. The highest pH value was obtained at day 3 of the fermentation which was 4.60. The titratable acidity showed variation from day 0 - 2 and then with a continuous decrease till day 5. The least titratable acidity was obtained at day 5 (0.03) and the highest at day 2 (0.77). Bacteria load decreases from 1.0 × 108 - 1.6 × 107 cfu/ml, while the fungi population increases from day 0 to day 5 of the fermentation period (1 × 103 - 2 × 104 sfu/ml). Bacterial isolates obtained were micrococcus leteus, Proteus vulgaris, Bacillus cereus, Baccillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus while the fungal isolates obtained were Aspergillus niger, Neurospora crassa, Brachysporium spp, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It can be concluded that oil palm waste fermentation is an acidic fermentation that involved mesophiles microbes. And with these, several tons of oil palm epicarp waste can be optimally fermented (though with further research) and used for other purposes thereby reducing environmental pollution that would have resulted leaving this oil palm fruit waste in the environment.

Transparent conducting ZnO (zinc oxide) thin films with an average thickness of 130 nm were deposited on glass substrates at substrate temperature of 373 K by RF (radio frequency) sputtering and annealed in nitrogen atmosphere (samples S1, S2 and S3) and in open air (samples S5, S6 and S7) at 423 K, 573 K and 723 K for 60 minutes. S4 is reserved as the reference or the as-deposited sample (sample that has not been annealed). The electrical and structural properties of the films were investigated using four-point probe, XRD (X-ray diffraction) and SEm (scanning electron microscopy). The as-deposited sample (S4 or sample that has not been annealed) was found to have a resistivity of 11.0 × 10-4 ?·cm, while that of the annealed samples lies between 6.0 × 10-4 ?·cm and 3.5 × 10-4 ?·cm. The XRD analysis of the annealed films shows that they are crystalline with preferential orientation of (002) plane. Other data analyzed from the samples includes the grain size (1.5059 -1.8898 μm), strain (1.77%-0.11%), residual stress (4.13-0.26 GPa) and the dislocation density (0.4409/m2-0.2800/m2).

Background & Aims: The study investigated the relationship between objective and subjective nutritional status parameters and quality of life in HIV seropositive patients. methods: Retrospective review of clinic records of 150 HIV seropositive patients at a teaching hospital in Nigeria. Nutritional status was evaluated objectively with anthropometry including body mass index (BmI), subjectively with malnutrition universal screening tool (mUST) and subjective global assessment (SGA) tool. Data on quality of life (QOL) assessed with WHOQOL (Bref), and CD4 count were extracted. Correlation analysis and linear regression were done to investigate the relationship between variables, level of significance set at p mUST (r = -0.186) and SGA (r = -0.192), p mains. Weight, mUST, SGA, percentage body fat were significant predictors of the percentage weight change in 6 months. Conclusions: BmI has significant positive association with psychological domain of QOL. mUST and SGA have significant negative association with certain domains. QOL did not predict short-term weight changes, as did the current weight, mUST, and SGA.

This research is intended to explore the capacity of malaysia soil in becoming a more effective heat sink for the application of Earth-to-Air Heat Exchanger (EAHE) Cooling Technology in malaysia. EAHE Cooling Technology consists of buried pipes underground where the ambient air is channeled through from the pipe inlet and produces cooler air at its outlet. Within the buried pipes, heat exchange process occurs between the air and the soil that surrounding the pipe. This building cooling technology has been applied in many countries, mostly in temperate or hot and arid climate where the diurnal temperature is large. However, minimal resources were found on the study of EAHE application to buildings in malaysia, hence there is room to develop. A parametric study on EAHE cooling application in malaysia was done through field experiment and concluded that among many parameters affecting the technology performance, the soil temperature which surrounded the pipe was the most influential factor. The study recommended to further reduce the soil temperature to achieve a cooler outlet temperature. In response to that, this research conducted a parametric study of soil temperature under three different soil surface conditions: bare, shaded with timber pallettes and insulated with used tyres at 1.0 m and 1.5 m underground. The data was logged for a month and the result has shown significant reduction in the soil temperature underground below the shaded and insulated soil surface as compared to below bare soil surface condition. The insulated soil surface produced the best result where the soil temperature was reduced up to 26.9°C. The main contribution of this paper is to highlight that the soil surface treatment can be used to reduce solar heat gain within the soil underground and thus improving the performance of EAHE Cooling Technology particularly for the application in malaysia tropical climate.

In this study, an optimum protocol for shoot formation through somatic embryogenesis using mature embryo explants was developed. Calli were initiated on murashige and Skoog (mS) media supplemented with varying concentration of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyl acetic acid (2,4-D) ranging from 1.5 mg/l-4.0 mg/l alone or in combination with 0.5 mg/l Kinetin (KN). Significance difference (p 0.05) was observed among the different concentrations of hormone used for callus induction. The highest percentage callus formation was obtained from the media fortified with 4 mg/l 2, 4-D for mature embryo obtained from imbibed seed while for the preconditioned mature embryo, the media supplemented with 2 m/l 2,4-D + 0.5 mg/l kinetin (KN) recorded more percentage callus formation compared to what was obtained from the media supplemented with 2.5 mg/l2,4-D + 0.5 mg/l. more percentage shoot formation was obtained from the media supplemented with 1 mg/l 6-benzylaminopurine (BA). Average number of shoot per callus was also more in the media fortified with 1 mg/l BA (2.25) but this was not significantly different from what was obtained from the media fortified with 2 mg/l BA+ 0.1 mg/l 2,4-D at 5% level of significance.

Objective:To investigate the effect of leaf aqueous extract from Gongronema latifolium(***)on CCl_(4)induced-oxidative stress in Wistar *** effect was assessed by measuring liver marker enzymes activity,analyzing the antioxidant parameters,lipid profile estimation and lipid peroxidation by-product following CCl_(4)induced-oxidative ***:milled *** leaves were subjected to aqueous extraction and the filtrate was evaporated between 40-60°C under reduced pressure and a calculated volume of the leaf extract was administered at a dose of 500 mg/kg body ***-five rats were grouped into seven groups of 5 animals each namely;control and experimental *** experimental groups were treated with 2.0 mL/kg body weight CCl_(4),25 mg/kg body weight/day silymarin(a standard hepatoprotective antioxidant),500 mg/kg body weight aqueous extract of *** leaves were administered to the CCl_(4)treated rats for 21 ***:Administration of the extract and silymarin increase significantly(Pmarker enzyme(aspartate aminotransferase,alanine aminotransferase,alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase)activities in serum,liver and kidney in the treated groups when compared with untreated *** antioxidant parameters(catalase,peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase)were significantly elevated(Pmals treated with the extract and silymarin in comparison with untreated ***_(4)induced oxidative stress mediated variations in total cholesterol,triacylglycerides,high-density lipoprotein cholesterol,low density lipoprotein cholesterol and very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were restored significantly(Pm this study indicated the antioxidant and antidyslipidemic potentials of the aqueous extract of *** leaves.
