Aim: To evaluate the effects of 1,3-dinitrobenznene (mDNB) on sperm motility of hamster and to correlate the re-sults with the fertility. methods: Adult male hamsters were gavaged with one of the 3 dose regimes of mDNB(1.5 mg daily for 4 weeks ,1.5 mg one day a week for 4 weeks and 1.0 mg 3 days a week for 4 weeks). Computerassisted semen analysis (CASA) was used to analyse the sperm motility parameters, curvilinear velocity (VCL) andstraight line velocity (VSL) of sperm in distal corpus epididymides and distal cauda epididymides. In vitro fertilisationwas carried out only for 1.5 mg mDNB daily group to determine the sperm fertilising capacity. Results: There wasa significant reduction in sperm velocity parameters at weeks 3 and 4 after treatment, which was correlated with a de-cline in sperm fertility. Conclusion; Sperm velocity parameters may be used to determine the effect of a toxic insulton the sperm function.

Aim: To evaluate the effects of acute and chronic doses of methoxy acetic acid (mAA) on in vitro fertilisation byhamster sperm and to correlate the data with the testicular damage. methods: Adult male hamsters were gavagedwith 3 single doses (0, 80, 160 and 650 mg/kg) and 3 chronic doses (0, 8, 32 and 64 mg/kg daily for 5 weeks) ofmAA in distilled water. After treatment hamsters were killed at weekly intervals and spermatozoa recovered from thedistal cauda epididymides were used to assess the fertilising capacity in vitro. The testes were processed for histologicalexamination. Results; Acute doses showed a significant reduction in sperm fertilising ability from week 3 and 4 af-ter treatment and with the chronic doses, the effects were more extensive and persistent. The results were in correpon-dence with the testicular damages observed. Conclusion: It is evident that both acute and chronic doses of mAAcan impair the sperm function by damaging one or more cell populations in the testis.(Asian J Androl 2001 Sep; 3: 209- 216)

The aggressive and invasive nature of brain tumors has hampered progress in the design and implementation of efficacious therapies. The recent success of targeted therapies in other tumor types makes this an attractive area for research yet complicating matters is the ability of brain tumors to circumvent the targeted pathways to develop drug resistance. Effective therapies will likely need to target more than one signaling pathway or target multiple nodes within a given pathway. Key to identifying these targets is the elucidation of the driver and passenger molecules within these pathways. Animal models provide a useful tool with many advantages in the study of these pathways. These models provide a means to dissect the critical components of tumorigenesis, as well as serve as agents for preclinical testing. This review focuses on the use of the RCAS/tv-a mouse model of brain tumors and describes their unique ability to provide insight into the role of oncogene cooperation in tumor development and progression.

Fire-based emergency management service(EmS)personnel are dispatched to various incidents daily,many of which have unique occupational *** fully understand the variability of incident types and how to best pre-pare and respond,an exploration of the *** system of incident types is *** study uses potential exposure to SARS-CoV-2 as a case example to understand if and how coding categories for incident call types may be updated to improve data standardization and emergency response decision *** received emergency response incident data generated by three fire department computer-aided dispatch(CAD)systems between march and September *** incident was labeled EmS,Fire,or *** the 162,766 incidents,approximately 8.1%(n=13,144)noted potential SARS-CoV-2 exposure within their narrative descriptions of which 86.3%were coded as EmS,9.9%as Fire,and 3.9%as *** assess coding variability across incident types,researchers used the original 3-incident type variable and a new 5-incident type variable reassigned by researchers into EmS,Fire,Other,Hazmat,and motor *** regressions compared differences in potential exposure using the 3-and 5-incident type *** evaluating the 3-incident type variable,those respond-ing to a Fire versus an EmS incident were 84%less likely to be associated with potential exposure to *** the 5-incident type variable,those responding to Fire incidents were 77%less likely to be associated with a potential exposure than those responding to EmS *** in potential exposure between the 3-and 5-incident type models show the need to understand how incident types are *** demonstrates the need for data standardization to accurately categorize incident types to improve emergency preparedness and *** have implications for incident type coding at fire department municipality and national levels.

Northern peatlands store nearly one-third of terrestrial carbon(C)stocks while covering only 3%of the global landmass;nevertheless,the drivers of C cycling in these often-waterlogged ecosystems are different from those that control C dynamics in upland forested *** explore how multiple abiotic and biotic characteristics of bogs interact to shape microbial activity in a northern,forested bog,we added a labile C tracer(13C-labeled starch)to in situ peat mesocosms and correlated heterotrophic respiration with natural variation in several microbial predictor variables,such as enzyme activity and microbial biomass,as well as with a suite of abiotic variables and proximity to vascular plants *** found that peat moisture content was positively correlated with respiration and microbial activity,even when moisture levels exceeded total saturation,suggesting that access to organic matter substrates in drier environments may be limiting for microbial *** to black spruce trees decreased total and labile heterotrophic *** negative relationship may reflect the influence of tree evapotranspiration and peat shading effects;i.e.,microbial activity may decline as peat dries and cools near ***,we isolated the response of heterotrophic respiration to explore the variation in,and interactions among,multiple abiotic and biotic drivers that influence microbial *** approach allowed us to reveal the relative influence of individual drivers on C respiration in these globally important C sinks.

Resource-scarce regions with serious COVID-19 outbreaks do not have enough ventilators to support critically ill patients,and these shortages are especially devastating in developing *** help alleviate this strain,we have designed and tested the accessible low-barrier in vivo-validated economical ventilator(ALIVE Vent),a COVID-19-inspired,cost-effective,open-source,in vivo-validated solution made from commercially available *** ALIVE Vent operates using compressed oxygen and air to drive inspiration,while two solenoid valves ensure one-way flow and precise cycle *** device was functionally tested and profiled using a variable resistance and compliance artificial lung and validated in anesthetized large *** functional test results revealed its effective operation under a wide variety of ventilation conditions defined by the American Association of Respiratory Care guidelines for ventilator *** large animal test showed that our ventilator performed similarly if not better than a standard ventilator in maintaining optimal ventilation *** FiO2,respiratory rate,inspiratory to expiratory time ratio,positive-end expiratory pressure,and peak inspiratory pressure were successfully maintained within normal,clinically validated ranges,and the animals were recovered without any *** regions with limited access to ventilators,the ALIVE Vent can help alleviate shortages,and we have ensured that all used materials are publicly *** this pandemic has elucidated enormous global inequalities in healthcare,innovative,cost-effective solutions aimed at reducing socio-economic barriers,such as the ALIVE Vent,can help enable access to prompt healthcare and life saving technology on a global scale and beyond COVID-19.
