neuropsychological features of progranulin-associated frontotemporal dementia: a nested case-control study

The distinction between sporadic and genetic behavioural-variant frontotemporal dementia(bvFTD)regarding some neuropsychological(nP)features remains ***,progranulin(GRn)-associated bvFTD frequently presents with early episodic memory impairment and some degree of parietal dysfunction which are supporters of Alzheimer’s disease(AD)*** this context,we aimed to characterize the nP profile of GRn-bvFTD as compared to sporadic-bvFTD and AD in patients with mild dementia(mini-mental State Examination score≥17 and Clinical Dementia Rating Scale score≤*** identified 21 patients at Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra,Portugal with GRn mutations belonging to fifteen different *** our focus was bvFTD variants,FTD-related aphasic forms(3 patients)were *** remaining 18 GRn-bvFTD were further matched with 18 sporadic-bvFTD and 18 AD patients according to disease staging,age and *** patients completed the mini-mental State Examination,montreal Cognitive Assessment(moCA)and a comprehensive nP assessment *** were converted into *** between groups in individual nP measures and nP domains were assessed through non-parametric tests(Kruskal-Wallis test analysis)and eta squared(ŋ2)was calculated as a measure of effect *** comparisons show that GRn patients have worse performances on verbal retrieval processes(P=0.039,ŋ2=0.110)and visuoconstructive abilities(P=0.039,ŋ2=0.190)than sporadic bvFTD *** compared to AD,GRn patients present a higher impairment in frontal(P=0.001,ŋ2=0.211)and parietal(P=0.041,ŋ2=0.129)measures and a better performance in memory tasks(P=0.020,ŋ2=0.120).Sporadic-bvFTD forms are worse than AD in frontal measures(P=0.032,ŋ2=0.200),being better in both memory(P=0.010,ŋ2=0.131)and visuospatial skills(P=0.023,ŋ2=0.231).Considering these results,we conclude that GRn-bvFTD patients present a nP profile that associates the typical patterns of FTD and AD ***

Validation of a preclinical dry eye model in new Zealand white rabbits during and following topical instillation of 1% ophthalmic atropine sulfate

Background : The objective of this study was to validate an animal model for dry eye during and after the administration of 1% ophthalmic atropine sulfate(OAS) in new Zealand white(nZW) *** : OAS(1%) was applied three times per day to 30 eyes of 15 healthy nZW rabbits. Sacrifice, enucleation, and lacrimal gland removal took place on days 15, 21,and 30(OAS group). A second group(n = 5) was used as control. Clinical evaluations took place on days 3, 10, 15, 18, 21, 24 and 30. The primary endpoints were:Schirmer I test, tear break-up time(TBUT), and corneal fluorescein staining. As secondary endpoints, clinical changes including intraocular pressure, and histopathology were *** : While OAS was administered, the Schirmer I test showed a statistically significant reduction for OAS group versus control( p nd versus basal production( p nificant differences between groups(days 3 and 10;p = 0.001) and versus basal values(day 3;p n staining showed a statistically significant difference(day 3;p = 0.001). The most frequent clinical finding was conjunctival hyperemia(76.9% OAS vs. 20% control). For histopathology, all OAS subjects presented some degree of inflammation(86.7% minimal;13.3% mild) whereas the control presented only 30% minimal inflammation. Goblet cell density showed no *** : The effectiveness of the OAS dry eye model in nZW rabbits as reported in previous studies was confirmed, provided that the application of the drug is maintained throughout the intervention;it is not a viable model after OAS administration is suspended.

The genus Pterostemon Schauer (Iteaceae), is a group of three species restricted in distribution to mexico. It includes: Pterostemon mexicanus Schauer, P. rotundifolius Ramírez, and P. bravoanus J. Jiménez-Ram. & martínez Gordillo. On the basis of field observations and herbarium specimens, we review the morphology (vegetative and reproductive), and distribution to give an updated taxonomic treatment for the genus. Additionally the utility of morphological characters is evaluated for taxomic use, and detailed taxonomic descriptions and ecological associations are given for each species.

The Social Conditions in the Genesis of Preeclampsia

This article highlights the importance of preeclampsia as a global public health problem and the lack of a satisfactory model to explain its genesis. Scientific advances relevant to the placental pathophysiology, which have resulted in a deeper understanding of the immunological mechanisms associated to preeclampsia and have been translated into better treatment options, are also highlighted, although to date these approaches cannot explain the origin of the disease. From a theoretical approach underpinned by the concepts related to the social determinants of the health, and specifically from current psychosocial epidemiology, an alternative approach that gives account for the genesis of preeclampsia is proposed. The proposal is based in the scientific literature as well as in the work of the authors;it takes as references unfavorable socioeconomic and psychosocial conditions in pregnant women, linking these conditions to a series of failed adaptive biological processes closely related to an ineffective allostatic response by the body, which ultimately determines the occurrence of the disease.

The Westward transport of mineral dust from the north Africa continent to Atlantic Ocean can produce poor air quality, low visibilities, and negatively impacting respiratory and cardiac health due to the optical and physical properties of aerosols. The dynamical impact of the sea-breeze on the dust vertical distribution in West Africa remains unknown. To investigate this issue, we have used in-situ measurements from lidar. We have focused on the attenuated backscatter of aerosols to study the effect of the local circulation on the vertical profile of mineral dust at land-sea transition. The results highlight a strong diurnal cycle of mineral dust associated with the nocturnal low-level jet (nLLJ). The jet is located between 500 m and 1000 m and crucially affected by the dynamic of the sea-breeze circulation.

The manuscript proposed a procedure designed to determine the hazard of total coastal flooding during the impact of hurricanes, which uses in its formulation the combination of river flooding and that caused by marine upwelling, which n>n>isn>n> multiplied by a density factor of the water that finds an explanation for the effect is shielding and rising of the water level when the currents of both floods collide in the coastal zone. The application of the procedure experimentally in the coastal sector Sevilla, of the municipality Guama province Santiago de Cuba, resultn>n>ingn>n> in the confirmation of areas previously modeled and estimated coastal flooding in the wake of extreme wean style="font-family:Verdana;">ther events in the study area;in addition to other new areas that confirm the actual visual and instrumental observations not included in previous studies.

myzus persicae(***)is now considered a threat to agricultural crops due to economic *** synthetic insecticides applied every year against ***,are reported to be unsafe for environment,humans,and beneficial ***,several species of myzus have been found to develop resistance due to over application of these ***,it is required to find some novel insecticide that would be safe for the environment as well as for *** the current study,two major pure constituentsα-pinene andβ-caryophyllene were evaluated for their insecticidal potential against *** using a fumigant toxicity ***,impact ofα-pinene andβ-caryophyllene on expression of five different genes,e.g.,HSP 60,FPPS I,OSD,TOL and AnT responsible for reproduction,dispersion,and growth of *** has also been *** perform fumigant toxicity assay,five different concentrations(3.5,4,4.5,5 and 6μL L−1)ofα-pinene andβ-caryophyllene were *** concentration(LC)was calculated,and gene expression studies were executed through qRT PCR at LC30 ofα-pinene andβ-*** constituents demonstrated excellent fumigant toxicity effects against *** at all five ***,α-pinene shows significantly better results(98%)as compared toβ-caryophyllene(80%)after 72 h at 6μL L−1 of *** highest upregulation in expression was demonstrated at LC30 dose ofα-pinene in five in three out of five genes understudy(TOL,AnT,and FPPS I).Conversely,two genes HSP 60 and OSD demonstrated downregulation at LC30 dose ofβ-***,our results highlighted the promising insecticidal potential of both compoundsα-pinene andβ-caryophylleneby interfering with the reproduction and development related processes in ***,allowing us to recommend the phytoconstituents under investigation as an ecofriendly alternative to synthetic insecticides.
