UPLC-QTOF-mS Analysis of Extracts from the Leaves of <i>Pouteria caimito</i>(Sapotaceae) and Their Antioxidant Activity

This study describes the phytochemical profile and antioxidant activity of an extract from the leaves of Pouteria caimito (Sapotaceae). The extract in ethanol was obtained by maceration at room temperature and subjected to the liquid-liquid partition to obtain fractions in hexane and ethyl acetate. Steroids, triterpenes, saponins, alkaloids and flavonoids were identified by the phytochemical prospection of extracts and fractions from the leaves. The analysis of the ethyl acetate fraction by UPLC-QTOF-mS allowed us to identify eight triterpenes, namely, euscaphic acid (1), hyptadienic acid (2), betulinic acid (3), oleanolic acid (4), ursolic acid (5), 3β-(O-p-coumaroyl)- alphitolic acid (6), 3β-(O-p-coumaroyl)-maslinic acid (7) and 3β-(O-p-coumaroyl)-2-hydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid (8). The ethanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction presented total phenolic contents of 10.6 ± 0.1 and 11.4 ± 0.3 mg GAE g-1, respectively, and considerable antioxidant activity in the DPPH assay with EC50 values of 299.4 ± 1.5 and 391.8 ± 0.9 μg·ml-1, respectively.

The copolymer poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) is one of the most interesting polymers for medical applications. This interest is justified by the fact that it is bioreabsorbable, biocompatible and non-toxic, while its degradation kinetics can be modified by the copolymerization ratio of the monomers. In this study, copolymers were synthesised at 175?C by opening the rings of the cyclic dimers of the D,L-lactide and glycolide monomers in the presence of stannous octoate initiator and lauryl alcohol co-initiator. The application of vacuum to the reaction medium, coupled with adequate stirring, is essential for obtaining good results. The following analytical techniques were used to characterise the synthesised copolymers: Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetry (TG), Nuclear magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NmR) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Both the input monomers and the reaction products were analysed. Important characteristics, such as melting temperature, glass transition temperature, thermal stability, chemical composition and the ratio of the monomers in the synthesised copolymer, were obtained from these analyses. These results helped to infer the absence of residual monomers in the synthesised copolymers.

Contact Precaution: Acceptance of Health Professionals to Teaching Hospital

The adoption by health professionals to the practice of patient isolation is a decision that reduces patients’ risks of occupational exposure to potentially contaminated biological material and prevents nosocomial infections. Verify the compliance of health professionals to the practices of contact precautions in patients colonized by microorganisms in a teaching hospital. This was a prospective observational cohort study in a special-sized hospital located in southeastern Brazil. The observation of health professionals in delivery of health care to patients with contact precaution was performed regarding hand hygiene, use of overcoat, glove, and mask. We carried out 1502 observations involving the following professional categories: nursing technicians and/or nursing assistants (n = 1028;68.4%), nurses (n = 200;13.3%), physical therapists (n = 185;12.3%), and physicians (n = 89;5.9%), totaling 971.8 hours. Regarding the level of compliance of professionals to contact precaution practices with hand hygiene after the procedures, the use of overcoats, gloves, and masks, all were statistically significant (p Klebsiella pneumoniae was the most positive pathogen identified in laboratory tests. This study provided the mapping of the compliance of health professionals to the practices of contact precautions in order to support a safer management of patient care reducing the risks of Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI). This study also showed that health professionals are using practice management to deal with their behavior to protect their health.

Itaipu Binacional Hydro Power Plant Thrust Bearing design Optimization for Higher Efficiency

Hydro generators installed in Itaipu Binacional power plant with 824/737 mVA rated output power （50/60 Hz） belong to the largest ones in the world. Among many unique features, the generators are equipped with the largest hydrodynamic thrust bearings ever built （external diameter 5,200 mm, axial load equals approximately 3,600 t）. This paper is an attempt to propose a new thrust bearing design with the use of the state-of-the-art technologies and simulation techniques that demonstrate a reduction of friction power losses generated by the thrust bearing. This paper is divided into two parts. Within the first one, the original thrust bearing design which was implemented in the generators is described. Related calculation results based on a TEHD （thermo-elasto-hydrodynamic） calculation software used by Alstom will be presented. A comparison between measurement results gathered in the 1980s is given. In the second part, a potential solution of a more beneficial bearing design is described. The proposed thrust bearing design modification is an implementation of Alstom＇s PolypadTm coating. This modern polymer （PEEK） coating material has already been used by Alstom in projects around the world for many years. This coating allows pushing the operating parameters limits toward higher temperatures and lower oil film thicknesses far beyond the limits known for the conventional bearing materials.

Rheological Study of Polymers Used as Viscosity Index Improvers for Automotive Lubricant Oils

In this work, a rheological study of automotive lubricant oils, neutral light paraffinic (NLP) and neutral medium paraffinic (NmP), additivated with two commercial viscosity index improvers-VIIs, based on hydrogenated poly (isoprene-co-styrene), at different concentrations, was carried out. The study included the determination of the kinematic viscosity of the mixtures, the calculation of the viscosity indexes and their behavior when subjected to various rheometric experiments, including stress sweep, steady state flow, creep and recovery, and temperature ramp oscillatory tests. The obtained results showed the efficacy of the additives as viscosity index improvers, enabling a significant increase in the viscosity index of the pure oils at relatively low concentrations. The determination of the storage (G’) and of the loss (G”) moduli for the mixtures oil/VII additives showed a large predominance of the viscous effect over the elastic one. Except when under low shear stress, the mixtures showed a pseudoplastic behavior, with the flow curves being adjusted to fit the Ostwald-de-Waele model (Power Law), with negative flow behavior indexes.

Rheological and Thermal Behavior of High-density Polyethylene (HDPE) at Different Temperatures

In the present work, rheological properties of HDPE samples were measured at temperatures of 150°C, 190°C and 230°C. It was shown, by oscillatory tests, at low frequencies, that, for temperatures of 150°C and 190°C, there was a predominance of the viscous behavior over the elastic one. At 230°C, there was a predominance of the elastic contribution, and there was an increase of the molar mass compared with the ones obtained from the tests at 150°C and 190°C. The results obtained from the temperature ramp oscillatory test showed that, up to around 248°C, the viscous behavior prevailed, the opposite being observed at higher temperatures. At 230°C the sample showed significantly lower values of strain when compared with the ones observed at 150°C and 190°C. Oxidative induction time (OIT), melting point and degree of crystallinity were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The DSC results and the rheological measurements showed a completely different behavior for the HDPE samples at 230°C compared with the 150°C and the 190°C ones, suggesting that HDPE, at the temperature of 230°C, underwent thermo-oxidative degradation with the initial predominance of crosslinking.

Impacts of Coffee Production in Agroforestry System for Sustainable development

This study estimates the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of coffee production in the agroforestry system in the settlements of farmers located in the West of the state of Silo Paulo, Brazil, in the region known as Pontal of Paranapanema, aiming at the development of programs to support the growth of production sustainable coffee and programs to protect the coffee activity before the possible global climate change. The settlements are located in areas with sandy soils and highly degraded by human action moreover, the region is considered marginal for the production of coffee, because it is subject to periods of high temperatures, prolonged drought and frost risk, which hinders the sustainability of farms. The environmental and socioeconomic impacts of agroforestry are analyzed through Ambitec-agro system, consisting of a set of indicators aimed at ex-post evaluation of the contribution of technological innovation to environmental, social and economic development of an agricultural activity. The system Ambitec involves：（1） general data collection about the technology; （2） application of questionnaires with adopters selected and insertion of data on impact indicators spreadsheets via platform mS-Excel and to obtain quantitative results and impacts partial indexes and aggregates the impact of technology selected; （3） analysis and interpretation of indices obtained, which vary between -15 and 15. The results indicate that agroforestry management can contribute to：（1） maintaining or increasing the sustainability of traditional coffee-growing regions in the case of sudden climate change; （2） the expansion of the coffee regions now considered unsuitable for the cultivation of coffee; （3） for sustainable regional development.
