Solid-state fermentation technology and innovation for the production of agricultural and animal feed bioproducts

It has now passed more than forty years since solid-state fermentation(SSF)research developments have gained importance for the scientific community.After so many years,numerous processes and equipment for SSF were studied and designed focusing on the production of different commercially relevant bioproducts such as enzymes,fermented food,such as Chinese daqu and koji,organic acids,pigments,phenolic compounds,aromas,biosorbents and so many others.However,no review paper has been focused yet specifically on agricultural and animal feed bioproducts obtained through SSF techniques.This review comprises the description of agricultural sub-products that have been employed in most important developed pro-cesses concerning the production of animal feed products and agricultural products such as spores,probiotics,biofungicides,bioinsecticides and other biopesticides,biofertilizers and plant growth hormones.Major designed SSF bioreactors are also described and the most important related cases of successful employment of the technique are reported.Finally,a summary of patents and innovations regarding SSF products and processes in this area is presented,showing that the main involved countries are China,South Korea,India and the USA.It is clear that the interest in this theme is increasing and that scientific and technological developments are still needed.

Dear editor:We sincerely thank Matthew j.Clarkson for his insightful commentary1 on our recent publication in the journal of Sport and Health Science.2 Clarkson's pioneering work in the development and application of blood flow restriction (BFR) exercise protocols has undeniably laid the groundwork for subsequent investigations in this field,including our own.(3-6)His commentary not only highlights the relevance and timeliness of our study but also offers valuable perspectives on refining safety considerations for intradialytic BFR exercise among hemodialysis patients.

There are two species of filarial parasites with sheathless microfilariae known to commonly cause parasitaemias in humans:Mansonella perstans and Mtinsonella ozzardi.In most contemporary accounts of the distribution of these parasites,neither is usually considered to occur anywhere in the Eastern Hemisphere.However,Sir Patrick Manson,who first described both parasite species,recorded the existence of sheathless sharp-tailed Mansonella ozzardilike parasites occurring in the blood of natives from New Guinea in each and every version of his manual for tropical disease that he wrote before his death in 1922.Manson's reports were based on his own identifications and were made from at least two independent blood sample collections that were taken from the island.Pacific region Mansonella perstans parasitaemias were also later(in 1923) reported to occur in New Guinea and once before this(in 1905) in Fiji.Although Mansonella-parasilaernias are generally regarded as benign,they are thought to be of public health importance because they can affect the epidemiological monitoring of other filarial diseases.In this article,we reviewed the historic literature concerning Pacific-origin Mansonella-parasitaemias in an attempt to explain how,despite repeated reports of Pacificregion Mansonella-parasilaemias,by as early as the 1970 s,the WHO had arrived at the presentday view that Wuchereria bancrofti is the only cause of filarial parasitaemias in Papua New Guinea.We have also evaluated the evidence supporting the contemporary existence of Pacificarea parasitaemia-causing Mansonella parasites and assessed the relevance such parasites could have for present-day lymphatic filariasis elimination efforts in the region.

Portal vein thrombosis is a common complica- tion in cirrhotic patients. When portal vein thrombectomy is not a suitable option, a large collateral vessel can be used for allograft venous inflow reconstruction. We describe an unusu- al case of successful portal revascularization using the right gastroepiploic vein. The patient underwent a cadaveric or- thotropic liver transplantation with end-to-end anastomosis of the portal vein to the right gastroepiploic vein. Six months after liver transplantation the patient is well with good liver function. The use of the right gastroepiploic vein for allograft venous reconstruction is feasible and safe, with a great advan- tage of avoiding the need of venous jump graft.

Biliary tract reconstruction using jejunal tube:an experimental study in dogs

BACKGROUND:To physiologically reconstruct the biliary tract,Crema et al suggested the application of the Monti principle to the biliary tract,already used in humans for the urinary tract.With this technique,a jejunal segment is transversely retubularized.This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of jejunal tube interposition between the common bile duct and duodenum in dogs.METHODS:Thirteen dogs underwent a laparoscopic common bile duct ligature,followed by a biliodigestive connection by jejunal tube interposition after one week.The levels of glutamic-pyruvic and glutamic-oxalacetic transaminases,total bilirubins,alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyltransferase were assessed before surgery and thereafter weekly until euthanasia,which was performed 6 weeks after biliodigestive connection.RESULTS:Data on 9 dogs were analyzed statistically.The dogs presented with obstructive jaundice after common bile duct ligature,as confirmed by biochemical examination.They showed a statistically significant reduction in cholestasis after biliodigestive connection by jejunal tube interposition and were healthy until the end of the experiment.CONCLUSION:A statistically significant reduction was seen in total bilirubin and canalicular enzymes(alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyltransferase)in the 9 dogs 6 weeks after biliodigestive connetion by jejunal tube interposition.

We review the recent progress that have led to the development of porous materials based on cellulose nanostructures found in plants and other resources. In light of the properties that emerge from the chemistry, shape and structural control, we discuss some of the most promising uses of a plant-based material, nanocellulose, in regenerative medicine. Following a brief discussion about the fundamental aspects of self-assembly of nanocellulose precursors, we review the key strategies needed for material synthesis and to adjust the architecture of the materials (using three-dimensional printing, freeze-casted porous materials, and electrospinning) according to their uses in tissue engineering, artificial organs, controlled drug delivery and wound healing systems, among others. For this purpose, we map the structure-property-function relationships of nanocellulose-based porous materials and examine the course of actions that are required to translate innovation from the laboratory to industry. Such efforts require attention to regulatory aspects and market pull. Finally, the key challenges and opportunities in this nascent field are critically reviewed.

The study presented in this manuscript aimed to relate the sedimentary strata imaged by the ground penetrating radar(GPR)method through numerical modeling with the mapping of sedimentary strata acquired through geotechnical surveys.The study aimed to expose how obtaining subsoil information through noninvasive/destructive electromagnetic waves is beneficial,as they are reliable and less costly than drilling holes beyond what is necessary to have a subsurface mapping.In this sense,physical-geological modeling was carried out.The information on the type of sediments,acquired through simple recognition surveys carried out in the city of Belém-PA,helped to create a model of a sedimentary package with its respective intrinsic physical properties.The result shows that the GPR recovered with good vertical and horizontal resolution at the beginning and end of the layers of the sedimentary package studied,proving to be very effective for locating geotechnical sounding points and safely reducing costs.

Mapping fractional landscape soils and vegetation components from Hyperion satellite imagery using an unsupervised machinelearning workflow

An unsupervised machine-learning workflow is proposed for estimating fractional landscape soils and vegetation components from remotely sensed hyperspectral imagery.The workflow is applied to EO-1 Hyperion satellite imagery collected near Ibirací,Minas Gerais,Brazil.The proposed workflow includes subset feature selection,learning,and estimation algorithms.Network training with landscape feature class realizations provide a hypersurface from which to estimate mixtures of soil(e.g.0.5 exceedance for pixels:75%clay-rich Nitisols,15%iron-rich Latosols,and 1%quartz-rich Arenosols)and vegetation(e.g.0.5 exceedance for pixels:4%Aspen-like trees,7%Blackberry-like trees,0%live grass,and 2%dead grass).The process correctly maps forests and iron-rich Latosols as being coincident with existing drainages,and correctly classifies the clay-rich Nitisols and grasses on the intervening hills.These classifications are independently corroborated visually(Google Earth)and quantitatively(random soil samples and crossplots of field spectra).Some mapping challenges are the underestimation of forest fractions and overestimation of soil fractions where steep valley shadows exist,and the under representation of classified grass in some dry areas of the Hyperion image.These preliminary results provide impetus for future hyperspectral studies involving airborne and satellite sensors with higher signal-to-noise and smaller footprints.
