Analysis of penicillamine using Cu-modified graphene quantum dots synthesized from uric acid as single precursor

A simple methodology was developed to quantify penicillamine(PA) in pharmaceutical samples, using the selective interaction of the drug with Cu-modified graphene quantum dots(Cu-GQDs). The proposed strategy combines the advantages of carbon dots(over other nanoparticles) with the high affinity of PA for the proposed Cu-GQDs, resulting in a significant and selective quenching effect. Under the optimum conditions for the interaction, a linear response(in the 0.10–7.50 μmol/L PA concentration range) was observed. The highly fluorescent GQDs used were synthesized using uric acid as single precursor and then characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, fluorescence, and absorption spectroscopy. The proposed methodology could also be extended to other compounds, further expanding the applicability of GQDs.

Dopamine and its receptors have been widely studied in the neurological conditions and in the retina. In this study, we evaluated the possible role of dopamine in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment(RRD) by comparing the amount of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid(DOPAC), a surrogate index of retinal dopamin levels, in the vitreous sample of patients affected by RRD with those affected by macular pucker and vitre ous hemorrhage. Our results showed that significantly higher levels of DOPAC were found in the vitreou sample of patients affected by RRD compared with those affected by vitreous hemorrhage and macula pucker(P = 0.002). Specifically, no trace of the substance was found in vitreous hemorrhage and macula pucker samples. A slightly significant positive correlation was found among DOPAC and post-operativ best corrected visual acuity(r = 0.470, P = 0.049). no correlation was found between DOPAC and the day elapsed between diagnosis and surgery(P = 0.317). For the first time our findings suggest that DOPAC i released in RRD, but not in other retinal diseases such as vitreous hemorrhage and macular pucker. More over, we showed a correlation between visual acuity outcome and the amount of DOPAC in the vitreous This might have a potential, although still unknown, implication in the pathogenesis of the disease and/o in the associated photoreceptors loss. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Rome Tor Ver gata University Hospital(R.S.92.10) on September 24, 2010.

Background:Ebola virus disease has reemerged as a major public health crisis in Africa,with isolated cases also observed globally,during the current ***:To estimate the basic reproductive ratio R0,which is a measure of the severity of the outbreak,we developed a SEIR(susceptible-exposed-infected-recovered)type deterministic model,and used data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC),for the Ebola outbreak in Liberia and Sierra *** different data sets are available:one with raw reported data and one with corrected data(as the CDC suspects under-reporting).Results:Using a deterministic ordinary differential equation transmission model for Ebola epidemic,the basic reproductive ratio R0 for Liberia resulted to be 1.757 and 1.9 for corrected and uncorrected case data,*** Sierra Leone,R0 resulted to be 1.492 and 1.362 for corrected and uncorrected case data,*** each of the two cases we considered,the estimate for the basic reproductive ratio was initially greater than unity leading to an epidemic ***:We obtained robust estimates for the value of R0 associated with the 2014 Ebola outbreak,and showed that there is close agreement between our estimates of *** of our model also showed that effective isolation is required,with the contact rate in isolation less than one quarter of that for the infected non-isolated population,and that the fraction of high-risk individuals must be brought to less than 10%of the overall susceptible population,in order to bring the value of R0 to less than 1,and hence control the outbreak.

Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycosis caused by the Sporothrix schenckii complex. It has three classic clinical variants: fixed, lymphangitic, and systemic. Treatment in most cases has been itraconazole or potassium iodide. The aim of this paper is to communicate an unusual relapsing case treated with IK. We report a 73-year-old woman with lymphangitic sporotrichosis, adequate response to treatment with potassium iodide, and recurrence 15 months after. A molecular test was performed through the amplification of a 331 bp fragment of the calmodulin gene. In both infections, the same specie was isolated. The effects of potassium iodide are briefly discussed, and we conclude that the same treatment can be prescribed, if no side effects are observed.

A systematic study of the magnetic and structural properties dependence on the particle size was *** this,commercial ndFeB powder was separated into five different mean particle sizes using ***,from the original powder,eleven samples were also produced by mechanical milling assisted by surfactant,using various milling times.A total of sixteen samples were studied by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray diffraction(XRD),vibrating sample magnetometry(VSM),and Mdssbauer spectrometry(MS).The particle sizes of the samples vary from the micrometer to the nanometer *** crystallite size decreases with decreasing particle *** result indicates that the nd2Fe14B phase is found in all the samples,and the presence of this phase is also corroborated by MS using six sextets for fitting their spectra,with an additional singlet corresponding to the nd1.1Fe4B4 *** mean hyperfine magnetic field increases with increasing particle size because the magnetic dipolar interaction between the magnetic moment of the particles increases with particle *** the VSM measurements the magnetic energy density(BH)max values were calculated for different particle sizes,and their maximum value of 34.45 MGOe is obtained for the sample with the particle size of 60μm.
