Efficient use of industrial equipment, increase its availability, safety and economic issues spur strong research on maintenance programs based on their operating conditions. Machines normally operate in a linear range, but when malfunctions occur, nonlinear behavior might set in. By studying and comparing five nonlinear features, which listed in decreasing order by their damage detection capability are： LLE （largest Lyapunov exponent）, embedded dimension, Kappa determinism, time delay and cross error values; i.e., LLE performs best. Using somewhat similar ideas from Chaos control, i.e., vary the ＂mass imbalance＂ forcing parameters, we aim to stabilize the Lorenz equation. Quite interestingly, for certain imbalance excitation values, the system is stabilized. The previous even when paradigmatically chaotic parameters for Lorenz system are used （plus our forcing terms）. This quasi-control approach is validated studying signals obtained from the previously mentioned lab test. Finally, it is concluded that analyzing and comparing nonlinear features extracted from baseline vs. malfunction condition （test acquired）, one might increase the efficiency and the performance of machine condition monitoring.

A paleoglacier reconstruction during the Last Glacial Maximum(LGM) is presented for a high mountain area of La Covacha massif in Sierra de Gredos(Iberian Central System) in central Spain. The moraines that, according with the previous literature, had formed during the global LGM, were mapped through photo interpretation of digital aerial photographs and 3D images and detailed field surveys. The topography of the paleoglaciers was estimated using a simple steady-state model that assumed a perfectly plastic ice rheology, reconstructing the theoretical ice profiles and obtaining the ice thickness of the glaciers during the LGM. The reconstruction of the glaciers was carried out using automated and semi-automated physically-based models, obtaining more realistic results with semi-automated models. According to our study, the paleoglaciers in the study area covered an area of 34.79 km^2 during the global LGM, with a maximum ice thickness of 366 meters in La Vega gorge, a total volume of 34.25 × 108 m^3 and a mean paleoELA of 1932 meters. Most of the ice(~82%) was in paleoglaciers facing north, and the rest was in paleoglaciers with other orientations. This emphasizes the importance of orientation in relation to glacier dynamics and ice accumulation. The results obtained in the calculation of paleoELAs during the global LGM in Gredos are average compared to the Iberian mountains of the Northwest where the values were much lower, and with respect to those of the Southwest, much higher. This demonstrates the importance of the exposure of Mediterranean mountains to the humidity sources coming from the NW during the global LGM, as is the case at present.

Adaptation to abiotic stresses like drought is an important acquirement of agriculturally relevant crops like maize. Development of enhanced drought tolerance in crops grown in climatic zones where drought is a very dominant stress factor therefore plays an essential role in plant breeding. Previous studies demonstrated that corn yield potential and enhanced stress tolerance are associated traits. In this study, we analyzed six different maize hybrids for their ability to deal with drought stress in a greenhouse experiment. We were able to combine data from morphophysiological parameters measured under well-watered conditions and under water restriction with metabolic data from different organs. These different organs possessed distinct metabolite compositions, with the leaf blade displaying the most considerable metabolome changes following water deficiency. Whilst we could show a general increase in metabolite levels under drought stress, including changes in amino acids, sugars, sugar alcohols, and intermediates of the TCA cycle, these changes were not differential between maize hybrids that had previously been designated based on field trial data as either drought-tolerant or susceptible. The fact that data described here resulted from a greenhouse experiment with rather different growth conditions compared to natural ones in the field may explain why tolerance groups could not be confirmed in this study. We were, however, able to highlight several metabolites that displayed conserved responses to drought as well as metabolites whose levels correlated well with certain physiological traits.

A multilayer perceptron(MLP) artificial neural network(ANN) model has been optimized by the multi-objective ant colony optimization(MOACO) algorithm, which uses three objective functions. A sensitivity analysis to choose MOACO parameter values is carried out by calculating hypervolume metric, and the proposed approach adopts the Vlsekriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje(VIKOR) decision method to choose final compromised solution on the Pareto front obtained from MOACO. As a result, we used the MLP-MOACO developed model to estimate the value of engine emissions of NOxin a four stroke, spark ignition(SI) gasoline engine and observed acceptable correlation coefficient(R^2) of 0.99978.

Modeling and multi-objective optimization of a gasoline engine using neural networks and evolutionary algorithms

In this paper, a multi-objective particle swarm optimization （MOPSO） algorithm and a nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II （NSGA-II） are used to optimize the operating parameters of a 1.6 L, spark ignition （SI） gasoline engine. The aim of this optimization is to reduce engine emissions in terms of carbon monoxide （CO）, hydrocarbons （HC）, and nitrogen oxides （NOx）, which are the causes of diverse environmental problems such as air pollution and global warming. Stationary engine tests were performed for data generation, covering 60 operating conditions. Artificial neural networks （ANNs） were used to predict exhaust emissions, whose inputs were from six engine operating parameters, and the outputs were three resulting exhaust emissions. The outputs of ANNs were used to evaluate objective functions within the optimization algorithms： NSGA-II and MOPSO. Then a decision-making process was conducted, using a fuzzy method to select a Pareto solution with which the best emission reductions can be achieved. The NSGA-II algorithm achieved reductions of at least 9.84%, 82.44%, and 13.78% for CO, HC, and NOx, respectively. With a MOPSO algorithm the reached reductions were at least 13.68%, 83.80%, and 7.67% for CO, HC, and NOx, respectively.

The increase in the number of gene copies at specific loci is a genetic alteration frequently associated with over expression of the related protein in cancer cells. Genes whose dose is consistently augmented in cancer include those involved in cell cycle control, proliferation, apoptosis, and angiogenesis among others. In this study, gene dose of onc ogenes MYCL1, MYCN, MYC, EGFR, ERBB2 and AKT2 in DNA obtained from lung tissue and blood plasma, of patients with primary lung cancer was evaluated with respect to normal lung tissue and plasma DNA of healthy individ uals, to determine the capacity of these genes to discriminate normal and neoplastic phenotypes. The number of copies of each gene was determined using real-time (2-△△CT). The AKT2 oncogene was found to be amplified frequently in plasma DNA from patients (74% of cases). This marker showed a noticeable ability to discriminate normal and neo-plastic phenotypes, with a 76 to 89% probability of correctly recognize a plasma sample provided by a lung cancer patient or a healthy individual. For this reason, this detection could be a very useful tool to supplement the existing diagnostic methods in pulmonary cancer.
