Evaluation of the Essential Oil of <i>Citrus paradisi</i>as an Alternative Treatment against <i>Candida albicans</i>

Introduction: The World Health Organization establishes that 80% of the world’s population uses traditional medicine for their primary care, because they contain compounds responsible for their properties. Objective: To evaluate the antifungal effect of the essential oil of Citrus paradisi against C. albicans and the cytotoxic effect in three cell lines in vitro. Methods: The phytochemical characterization of the oil was carried out by chemical methods and Gas chromatography (GC-MS) and the antifungal effect against C. albicans (ATCC 90029) was evaluated by the Kirby-Bauer method, which evaluated concentrations of 0.75 - 20 μg/mL and compared with nystatin 100,000 Ul/mL as a positive control. The percentage of the relative inhibitory effect was calculated. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined at 24 hours. Moreover, the cytotoxic effect on C. albicans and cell lines was determined by the colorimetric MTT tetrazolium assay. Finally, the antifungal effect against Candida strains isolated from clinical samples was evaluated at a concentration of 20 μg/mL. Results: The essential oil showed an antifungal effect with a percentage of inhibition of 123%. The MIC was 2.5 μg/mL, and the cytotoxicity index was 5.44 μg/mL for C. albicans. The IC50 values were 21.060, 9.482 and 4.176 μg/mL for Vero E6, J774A.1 and MDBK cells respectively. Conclusion: These results show the use of C. paradisi essential oil as an alternative treatment in oral antifungal therapy, it is beneficial due to its antifungal effect and its low toxicity on cell cultures.

Lymphocytes respond to mitogens that stimulate proliferation by increasing theirs metabolic activity. In this study we investigate L-Glutamine and L-Leucine uptake as markers of cell response to Concavalina A (ConcaA) stimulation, using a high-resolution flow technique. We found that lymphocytes induced to blast transformation enhanced rate and efficiency of amino acid uptake during cell proliferation. Considering that increases in transport is the first quantifiable response of cells during malignant transformation, amino acid uptake could also be useful as an early marker of malignancy.

Background: It is well-founded that empathy is an attribute that increases the likelihood of good communication between health professionals and patients, and it is usual that there is the conviction that empathy levels are higher in women than in men. Aims: A study comparing levels of empathy gender of students in 18 schools of dentistry from six Latin American countries was conducted. Method: An exploratory cross-sectional study of which empathy levels were measured by the Jefferson Scale of Empathy for dental students (S version) and these levels were compared between genders by t-student test, after verification of normal distribution and homoscedasticity. Results: Variability was found in the results of the comparisons. In some cases, empathy levels were higher in women, others in men and in most of them there were no differences between genders. Conclusions: The observed results do not support the belief that women are more empathetic than men. However, more studies must be performed in more powers and countries to verify that the results described constitute a scientific fact and not just a feature of dental students specifically in the countries studied.

OBJECTIVES Elderly patients show a higher incidence of ischemic and bleeding events after percutaneous transluminal coron-ary intervention(PCI).We sought to investigate outcomes in elderly patients treated with antithrombotic strategy guided by bleeding and ischemic risks after revascularization with last generation everolimus-eluting stent(EES).METHODS Prospective multicenter registry including patients over 75 years revascularized with EES and antithrombotic ther-apy guided by clinical presentation,PCI complexity and PRECISE DAPT ***-primary safety endpoints were:(1)composite of cardiac death,myocardial infarction and stent thrombosis and;(2)bleeding(BARC 2-5).Primary efficacy endpoint was target lesion revascularization.A matched group of patients revascularized with current drug-eluting stents and no such tailored antith-rombotic therapy was used as *** Finally,1064 patients were included in SIERRA-75 cohort,80.8±4.2 years,36.6%women,71%acute coronary syn-dromes(ACS)and 53.6%complex ***-primary safety endpoint of major adverse cardiovascular events was met in 6.2%,co-primary safety endpoint of bleeding in 7.8%and primary efficacy endpoint of TKLR in 1.5%.The multivariable adjusted model showed no significant association of the prescribed short/long dual antiplatelet therapy(DAPT)durations with any endpoint suggesting a well tailored *** stent thrombosis reported in the subgroup with 1-3 months DAPT *** compared to control group,bleeding BARC 2-5 was significantly lower in SIERRA-75 group(7.4%vs.10.2%,P=0.04)as well as the net safety-efficacy endpoint(14.3%vs.18.5%,P=0.02).CONCLUSIONS In elderly population,the application of this risks-adjusted antithrombotic protocol after revascularization with last generation EES seems to be associated with an improved prognosis in terms of ischemic and bleeding outcomes.

＜正＞ Before of implementing a design for an Engineering System different design proposals should be evaluated to choose the most suitable one. This evaluation process is carried out according to different criteria, the main problem is that the knowledge about these criteria is usually vague and incomplete. In this contribution, we use the fuzzy linguistic approach and the Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence to deal with it. We shall propose an evaluation model of different designs based on the Safety, Cost and Technical performance criteria. To develop this evaluation model we shall define a multi-granular linguistic evaluation framework and after propose a evaluation model based on a decision process.

背景与目的林奇综合征(lynch syndrome,LS)是一种遗传性疾病,LS患者罹患结直肠癌、子宫内膜癌和其他与DNA错配修复基因发生种系突变相关肿瘤的风险较高。LS的传统遗传诊断方法为对与疑似综合征相关的基因进行桑格测序。二代测序技术(next-generation sequencing,NGS)可同时对大量遗传性癌基因进行测序。本研究旨在探究林奇综合征患者中是否存在其他遗传性种系病理癌基因变异。方法我们选取先前已利用桑格测序遗传诊断法确诊的84例LS先证者作为研究对象,通过杂交捕获一组94个商业化的遗传癌基因,随后对这些捕获的样本进行NGS测序。按照美国医学遗传学和基因组学标准,对这些变异的临床意义进行分类。利用桑格测序验证NGS的结果。在可能的情况下,利用桑格测序进一步在先证者的亲属中进行新发现种系变异基因的遗传分析。结果我们从84个家族中鉴定出5(6%)个至少含有2个种系致病变异的家族,这些变异具有高或中等的诱发不同显性癌症的风险,这些家族的种系致病变异如下:[MLH1-BRCA2-NBN]、[MLH1-BRCA1]、[MSH2-ATM]、[MSH6-NF1]和[MLH1-FANCA]。有趣的是,这5个家族中只有1个家族表现出与新的致病变异相关的临床表型。含有3个致病变异基因[MLH1-BRCA2-NBN]的家族显示出LS、乳腺和卵巢癌综合征相关肿瘤的高度聚集特性。结论我们的研究表明,癌症易感基因中,同时发生多个致病变异是LS病例的显著特点。在大部分的病例中,继发性致病变异与临床表型不相关。将来需要进一步验证这些结论并阐明其临床影响。只有表现出复杂的临床表型家族才有必要重新对LS进行分析。

Multimodal morphometry and functional magnetic resonance imaging in schizophrenia and auditory hallucinations

AIM: To validate a multimodal [structural and functional magnetic resonance (MR)] approach as coincidence brain clusters are hypothesized to correlate with clinical severity of auditory hallucinations. METHODS: Twenty-two patients meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (fourth edition, DSM-IV) criteria for schizophrenia and experiencing persistent hallucinations together with 28 healthy controls were evaluated with structural and functional MR imaging with an auditory paradigm designed to replicate those emotions related to the patients’ hallucinatory experiences. Coincidence maps were obtained by combining structural maps of gray matter reduction with emotional functional increased activation. Abnormal areas were correlated with the brief psychiatric rating scale (BPRS) and the psychotic symptom rating scale (PSYRATS) scales. RESULTS: The coincidence analysis showed areas with coexistence gray matter reductions and emotional activation in bilateral middle temporal and superior temporal gyri. Significant negative correlations between BPRS and PSYRATS scales were observed. BPRS scores were negatively correlated in the middle temporal gyrus (right) (t = 6.86, P = 0.001), while negative PSYRATS correlation affected regions in both the superior temporal gyrus (left) (t = 7.85, P = 0.001) and middle temporal gyrus (left) (t = 4.97, P = 0.002). CONCLUSION: Our data identify left superior and middle temporal gyri as relevant areas for the understanding of auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia. The use of multimodal approaches, sharing structural and functional information, may demonstrate areas specifically linked to the severity of auditory hallucinations.
