Occurrence data may provide unreliable thermal preferences and breadth of species

Accurate information on the thermal preference and specialization of species is needed to understand and predict spe- cies geographical range size and vulnerability to climate change. Here we estimate the position and breadth of species within thermal gradients based on the shape of the response curve of species abundance to temperature. The objective of the study is to compare the measurements of this approach based on abundance data with those of the classical approach using species＇ occur- rence data. The relationship between species＇ relative abundance and minimum winter temperature of 106 bird species wintering in the Iberian Peninsula is modeled at 100 Km2 resolution with quadratic logistic regressions. From these models we calculated the preferred temperature of species as the temperature at which the abundance is maximized, and the thermal breadth of species as the relative area under the temperature-abundance curve. We also estimated the thermal preferences and breadth of species as the average temperature and temperature range of the UTM cells in which the species are present. The abundance-temperature response curves reveal that birds prefer higher temperatures to overwinter, and are more thermally selective, than is measured by the classical approach. Moreover, response curves detect a higher inter-specific variability in both thermal preferences and ther- mal breadth of species. As occurrence data gives the same weight to cells with one or many individuals, the average temperature of the cells in which the species is present roughly reflects the average temperature in the region of study and not the environ- mental preferences of species .

Wildlife trafficking is classified as the fourth largest illegal commerce in the world. Taxonomic identification of wildlife is an ordinary process for forensics experts. The aim of this study was to analyze animal’s hair from Brazilian’s wildlife through microscopic and compare morphology of bristle among species analyzed. Hair samples of nine species were analyzed. Glass slides were analyzed through optical microscopy and following measurements were obtained: total length, medulla diameter, overall diameter and overall ratio diameter of the medulla’s diameter. The images obtained at identification of animals through the morphology of hair and the statistics analysis corroborates in favor for the validation of the technique.

Inadvertent Postoperative Hypothermia at Post-Anesthesia Care Unit: Incidence, Predictors and Outcome

Background: Inadvertent postoperative hypothermia (IPH) is known to be associated with various adverse effects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence, predictors and outcome of core inadvertent hypothermia on admission in the post-anesthesia care unit. Methods: Observational, prospective study in a Post-Anesthesia Care Unit. The study population consisted of adult patients after non-cardiac and non-neurologic surgery. Patients’ demographics, intraoperative and postoperative data were collected. Descriptive analysis of variables was used to summarize data and the Mann-Whitney U test, Fisher’s exact test or Chi-square test was used. Univariate and multivariate analyses were done with logistic binary regression with calculation of an Odds Ratio (OR) and its 95% Confidence Interval. Results: The incidence of IPH on admission was 32%. In univariate analysis: age, body mass index (BMI), high risk surgery, revised cardiac risk index (RCRI), type of anesthesia, use of forced-air warming, amount of intravenous crystalloids administrated, duration of anesthesia, duration of surgery and admission visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain > 3 were considered predictors of hypothermia. In multiple logistic regression analysis, age (OR 1.7, P = 0.045, for age > 65 years), RCRI (OR 3.18, P = 0.041, for RCRI > 2), duration of anesthesia (OR 1.52, P < 0.001) and admission VAS for pain (OR 2.05, P = 0.007) were considered independent predictors of IPH. Patients with IPH at PACU admission stay longer in the PACU. Conclusions: IPH was associated with a longer stay in the PACU. Age, comorbidities duration of anesthesia and pain at PACU admission were considered independent predictors for IPH.

The high morbidity generated by the infection caused by parasites of the genus Leishmania, make of this infection into one of the vector-borne infectious diseases most relevant worldwide, which added to the fact that the drugs used for its treatment are far from be optimal and considering that prophylactic approaches (such as the development of a vaccine) still seems far from being achieved, make of the search for new therapeutic alternatives for safe and effective treatment of this disease one of the most accurate approaches to the control of this disease. In this study we evaluated the antileishmanial and immunomodu- latory activity of the compound 11α,19β-dihydroxy- 7-acetoxy-7-deoxoichangin (a seco-limonid molecule) through: 1) evaluation of its cytotoxicity over promastigotes and axenic amastigotes of L. (V) panamensis, 2) determination of its ability to induce the control of in vitro infection, using infected murine cells (J774.2) and human dendritic cells (hDCs), 3) quantifying the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, (iv) evaluating the expression of cell markers associated with hDCs maturation, and (v) determinating the production of nitric oxide free radicals (NO). In this regard, this seco-limonoid exhibited an antileishmanial activity represented in the reduction of in vitro infection in J774.2 cells and hDCs, with a EC50 of 7.9 μM (4.48 μg/mL) and 25.5 μM (14.39 μg/mL), respectively, and additionally, we observed an increase on the production of IL-12p70, TNF-α and NO, as also, in the number of hDCs HLA-DR-positive in treated infected hDCs. These findings suggest that anti-lei- shmanial activity of this compound could be associated with the potential “reactivation” of phagocytic cell that is “paralyzed” by the infection, generating an immune phenotype associated with protection.

Bee venom acupuncture reduces neuroinflammation modulating microglia/macrophage phenotype polarization in spinal cord injury compression model

Aim: The present study aimed to examine whether apipuncture (stimulation of acupuncture points with bee venom)at ST36 and GV3 acupoints promotes neuroprotection and reduces neuroinflammation by modulating M1 and M2 phenotype ***: Wistar rats were treated with bee venom (BV) (0.08 mg/kg) injection at acupoints ST36 and GV3 [BV (ST36 + GV3)-spinal cord injury (SCI)] or BV injection at non-acupoints [BV (NP)-SCI] or no treatment (CTL-SCI)after SCI by compression. The spinal cord mRNA expression of iNOS, Arg-1 and TGF-β was measured by real time PCR and the levels of IBA-1;BCL-2;NeuN e CNPase was measured by western blotting. Locomotor performance was measured by Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan (BBB) and grid-walking ***: Apipuncture treatment was able to (1) ameliorate locomotor performance;(2) reduce inflammatory markers (Cox-2 levels) and activation of microglia and macrophages;(3) reduce the polarization of the M1 phenotype marker (iNOS) and increase M2 (Arg-1 and TGF-β) phenotypic markers;(4) promote neuroprotection by reducing the death of neurons and oligodendrocytes;and (5) increase the expression of the anti-apoptotic factor ***: Apipuncture treatment induces locomotor recovery and neuroprotection after the compression model of spinal cord injury. Further, it reduces neuroinflammation by decreasing M1 polarization and increasing M2 phenotype.

We consider a typical master equation describing thermal time-evolution. In parallel, we also consider a quasi static canonical description of the same problem. We are able to devise a way of numerically comparing these two treatments and concoct a distance-measure between them. In this way, one is in a position to know how far or close equilibrium and off-equilibrium can get. The first, rather surprising observation, is that our systems lose structural details as N grows. Also, the time-evolution of the distance between the two pertinent probability distributions is quite sensitive to the heating-cooling process.

Chemical composition of Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil and antioxidant action against gastric damage induced by absolute ethanol in the rat

Objective: To evaluate the antioxidant activity of the essential oil obtained from Rosmarinus officinalis(R. officinalis) in ethanol-induced gastric ulcer model in ***: The antioxidant properties of the essential oil obtained from R. officinalis were evaluated against gastric injury induced by absolute ethanol. Gastric tissues were prepared to enzymatic assays. The levels of glutathione, lipid peroxides, and the activities of glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and myeloperoxidase were ***: Ethanol produced severe hemorrhagic lesions in the stomach with ulcerative lesion of(140.2 ± 37.2) mm2. In animals pretreated with essential oil of R. officinalis(50 mg/kg, p.o.), a significant inhibition of mucosal injury of(21.2 ± 7.1) mm2(84%inhibition) was observed. The essential oil of R. officinalis protected the gastric mucosa probably by modulating the activities of the enzymes(superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase) and increasing or maintaining the levels of glutathione. In addition,lipid peroxides levels were reduced. The essential oil of R. officinalis was analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometer and the main constituents were cineole(28.5%),camphor(27.7%) and alpha-pinene(21.3%).Conclusions: We suggest that the monoterpenes present in the essential oil obtained from R. officinalis may be among the active principles responsible for the antioxidant activity shown by essential oil of R. officinalis.

Background: Green tea has been used as a daily beverage for several years. Anti-inflammatory effect of tea has also been depicted in different papers. Therefore we had set forward this study to examine the potential anti- inflammatory activity of green tea in small intestine mucositis experimental models. Aims: Evaluation of anti- inflammatory effects of green tea on mice. Materials and Methods: Green tea decoction (20%) was prepared by soaking 20 g of green tea in 100 ml boiled water separately, soaked for 2 minutes and thereafter filtered. In- flammatory activity was induced using methotrexate (2.75 g/kg/24 h sc), and a protecting effect of mucositis con- dition was investigated by vitamin E and Camellia sinensis decoction. Study Design: An experimental study was approved by an Animal Ethical Commitee. Results: Green tea decoction (20%) has shown significant anti-in- flammatory effects (65% and 70%) on methotrexate-induced acute mucositis model. In villous atrophy Green tea decoction (10% and 20%) has shown no protecting action at different intestinal segments. But at intestinal crypt hyperplasia, green tea decoction has shown 65.74%, as compared to mucositis group. An increase of apoptotic bodies were acchieved at MTX group, CS reduced this occurrence. Conclusion: Taken together, our data indi- cate that green tea (20%) has a potential anti-inflammatory compared vitamin E antioxidant action and cor- roborates with the current trend of tea being promoted as “health drink”. However more pharmacological and biochemical assays is necessary to elucidate mechanisms.
