Efficiency in hydrocarbon degradation and biosurfactant production by Joostella sp.A8 when grown in pure culture and consortia

Joostella strains are emerging candidates for biosurfactant production. Here such ability was analyzed for Joostella strain A8 in comparison with Alcanivorax strain A53 and Pseudomonas strain A6, all previously isolated from hydrocarbon enrichment cultures made of polychaete homogenates. In pure cultures Joostella sp. A8 showed the highest stable emulsion percentage（78.33%）, hydrophobicity rate（62.67%）, and an optimal surface tension reduction during growth in mineral medium supplemented with diesel oil（reduction of about 12 mN/m）, thus proving to be highly competitive with Alcanivorax and Pseudomonas strains. During growth in pure culture different level of biodegradation were detected for Alcanivorax strain A53（52.7%）,Pseudomonas strain A6（38.2%） and Joostella strain A8（26.8%）. When growing in consortia,isolates achieved similar abundance values, with the best efficiency that was observed for the Joostella-Pseudomonas co-culture. Gas-chromatographic analysis revealed an increase in the biodegradation efficiency in co-cultures（about 90%）, suggesting that the contemporary action of different bacterial species could improve the process. Results were useful to compare the efficiencies of well-known biosurfactant producers（i.e. Pseudomonas and Alcanivorax representatives） with a still unknown biosurfactant producer, i.e. Joostella, and to confirm them as optimal biosurfactant-producing candidates.

Autonomous Vehicle Platoons In Urban Road Networks:A Joint Distributed Reinforcement Learning and Model Predictive Control Approach

In this paper, platoons of autonomous vehicles operating in urban road networks are considered. From a methodological point of view, the problem of interest consists of formally characterizing vehicle state trajectory tubes by means of routing decisions complying with traffic congestion criteria. To this end, a novel distributed control architecture is conceived by taking advantage of two methodologies: deep reinforcement learning and model predictive control. On one hand, the routing decisions are obtained by using a distributed reinforcement learning algorithm that exploits available traffic data at each road junction. On the other hand, a bank of model predictive controllers is in charge of computing the more adequate control action for each involved vehicle. Such tasks are here combined into a single framework:the deep reinforcement learning output(action) is translated into a set-point to be tracked by the model predictive controller;conversely, the current vehicle position, resulting from the application of the control move, is exploited by the deep reinforcement learning unit for improving its reliability. The main novelty of the proposed solution lies in its hybrid nature: on one hand it fully exploits deep reinforcement learning capabilities for decisionmaking purposes;on the other hand, time-varying hard constraints are always satisfied during the dynamical platoon evolution imposed by the computed routing decisions. To efficiently evaluate the performance of the proposed control architecture, a co-design procedure, involving the SUMO and MATLAB platforms, is implemented so that complex operating environments can be used, and the information coming from road maps(links,junctions, obstacles, semaphores, etc.) and vehicle state trajectories can be shared and exchanged. Deep-learning-empowered synthetic dimension dynamics: morphing of light into topological modes

Synthetic dimensions(SDs) opened the door for exploring previously inaccessible phenomena in high-dimensional space. However, construction of synthetic lattices with desired coupling properties is a challenging and unintuitive task. Here, we use deep learning artificial neural networks(ANNs) to construct lattices in real space with a predesigned spectrum of mode eigenvalues, and thus to validly design the dynamics in synthetic mode dimensions. By employing judiciously chosen perturbations(wiggling of waveguides at desired frequencies), we show resonant mode coupling and tailored dynamics in SDs. Two distinct examples are illustrated: one features uniform synthetic mode coupling, and the other showcases the edge defects that allow for tailored light transport and confinement. Furthermore, we demonstrate morphing of light into a topologically protected edge mode with modified Su–Schrieffer–Heeger photonic lattices. Such an ANN-assisted construction of SDs may advance toward “utopian networks,” opening new avenues for fundamental research beyond geometric limitations as well as for applications in mode lasing,optical switching, and communication technologies.

As silicon photonics transitions from research to commercial deployment,packaging solutions that efficiently couple light into highly compact and functional sub-micrometer silicon waveguides are imperative but remain *** 220 nm silicon-on-insulator(SOI)platform,poised to enable large-scale integration,is the most widely adopted by foundries,resulting in established fabrication processes and extensive photonic component *** development of a highly efficient,scalable,and broadband coupling scheme for this platform is therefore of paramount *** two-photon polymerization(TPP)and a deterministic free-form micro-optics design methodology based on the Fermat’s principle,this work demonstrates an ultraefficient and broadband 3-D coupler interface between standard SMF-28 single-mode fibers and silicon waveguides on the 220 nm SOI *** coupler achieves a low coupling loss of 0.8 dB for the fundamental TE mode,along with 1 dB bandwidth exceeding 180 *** broadband operation enables diverse bandwidthdriven applications ranging from communications to ***,the 3-D free-form coupler also enables large tolerance to fiber misalignments and manufacturing variability,thereby relaxing packaging requirements toward cost reduction capitalizing on standard electronic packaging process flows.
