The vitality of European forests continues to decline due to new pests and diseases,climate-change related disturbances and high loads of atmospheric nitrogen *** soil health is a major factor underpinning the low vitality of West-European *** tree species with soil ameliorative traits is proposed as an avenue to counteract soil acidification and improve overall forest *** we evaluate the impact of black cherry(Prunus serotina Ehrh.),a known rich litter species,on the vitality of neighboring pedunculate oak(Quercus robur L.)in ten mixed forests on sand in Germany,belgium and the *** found that black cherry admixture increases foliar N and P to a surplus whereas it causes deficiencies in foliar Mg,thereby resulting in an overall negative effect on oak foliar nutrient ***,defoliation of oak leaves by herbivory decreases with the proximity of black *** structural equation modelling(SEM),we tested the hypothesized‘improved soil health’*** analyses showed that black cherry admixture leads to lower accumulation in the humus layer,resulting in higher soil base saturation which has a positive effect on foliar Ca yet a negative effect on total ***,the SEM illustrated that herbivory of oak leaves decreases when black cherry is admixed,both via dilution and improved soil *** effects of black cherry on oak vitality via“improved soil health”in our SEM are however small in comparison to direct ***,our study showed that the combined positive and negative impacts of black cherry on oak vitality are limited,which tempers the potential benefits of using the rich litter species to counteract oak decline via improved soil health–yet,the concern of black cherry as an invasive alien species negatively affecting the vitality of mature pedunculate oak trees may also be exaggerated.

The whitefly bemisia tabaci is a serious threat in tomato cultivation worldwide as all varieties grown today are highly susceptible to this devastating herbivorous *** accessions of the tomato wild relative Solanum pennellii show a high resistance towards b. tabaci. A mapping approach was used to elucidate the genetic background of whiteflyresistance related traits and associated biochemical traits in this species. Minor quantitative trait loci（QTLs） for whitefly adult survival（AS） and oviposition rate（OR） were identified and some were confirmed in an F2bC1 population, where they showed increased percentages of explained variance（more than 30%）. bulked segregant analyses on pools of whiteflyresistant and-susceptible F2 plants enabled the identification of metabolites that correlate either with resistance or susceptibility. Genetic mapping of these metabolites showed that a large number of them co-localize with whiteflyresistance QTLs. Some of these whitefly-resistance QTLs are hotspots for metabolite QTLs. Although a large number of metabolite QTLs correlated to whitefly resistance or susceptibility, most of them are yet unknown compounds and further studies are needed to identify the metabolic pathways and genes involved. The results indicate a direct genetic correlation between biochemical-based resistance characteristics and reduced whitefly incidence in S. pennellii.

The structural and vibrational properties of two-dimensional hexagonal silicon （silicene） and germanium （germanene） are investigated by means of first-principles calculations. It is predicted that the silicene （germanene） structure with a small buckling of 0.44 ,~ （0.7/k） and bond lengths of 2.28 ,~ （2.44 .~） is energetically the most favorable, and it does not exhibit imaginary phonon mode. The calculated non-resonance Raman spectra of silicene are characterized by a main peak at about 575 cm-1, namely the G-like peak. For germanene, the highest peak is at about 290 cm-1. Extensive calculations on armchair silicene nanoribbons and armchair germanene nanoribbons are also performed, with and without hydrogenation of the edges. The studies reveal other Raman peaks mainly distributed at lower frequencies than the G-like peak which could be attributed to the defects at the edges of the ribbons, thus not present in the Raman spectra of non-defective silicene and germanene. Particularly the Raman peak corresponding to the D mode is found to be located at around 515 cm-1 for silicene and 270 cm-1 for germanene. The calculated G-like and the D peaks are likely the fingerprints of the Raman spectra of the low-buckled structures of silicene and germanene.

Immunogenic antigens for vaccination are often created through the production of recombinant proteins using Escherichia coli.1 As a side product,aggregates called inclusion bodies(Ibs)are formed,containing largely misfolded forms of the overexpressed recombinant protein.2 The effect of Ibs on the immune system and whether they can be used as effective vaccine products remain *** non-native conformation of proteins upon accumulation in Ibs abrogates their use as vaccines aimed at generating high-affinity antibodies.3 However,Ibs exhibit unique properties,including mechanical and thermal stability due to their intrinsic particulate nature,biocompatibility,high antigenic content,low toxicity and relative resistance to *** characteristics make Ibs attractive as an antigenic vaccine formulation for T cell responses to linear *** Ibs can trigger adaptive cellular responses initiated via uptake by dendritic cells for presentation to T cells is unknown.

The idea of stacking multiple monolayers of different two-dimensional materials has become a global pursuit. In this work a silicene armchair nanoribbon of width W and van der Waals-bonded to different transition-metal dichalcogenide （TMD） bilayer substrates MoX2 and WX2, where X = S, Se, Te is considered. The orbital resolved electronic structure and ballistic transport properties of these systems are simulated by employing van der Waals-corrected density functional theory and nonequilibrium Green＇s functions. We find that the lattice mismatch with the underlying substrate determines the electronic structure, correlated with the silicene buckling distortion and ultimately with the contact resistance of the two-terminal system. The smallest lattice mismatch, obtained with the MoTe2 substrate, results in the silicene ribbon properties coming close to those of a freestanding one. With the TMD bilayer acting as a dielectric layer, the electronic structure is tunable from a direct to an indirect semiconducting layer, and subsequently to a metallic electronic dispersion layer, with a moderate applied perpendicular electric field.

Physical separation processes are best understood in terms of the behaviour of individual ore ***,while different empirical particle-based separation modelling approaches have been developed,their predictive performance has never been tested under variable process ***,we investigated the predictive performance of a state-of-the-art particle-based separation model under variable feed composition for a laboratory-scale magnetic separation of a skarn *** scenarios were investigated:one in which the mass flow of the different processing streams could be measured and one in which it had to be estimated from *** both scenarios,the predictive models were sufficiently general to predict the process outcomes of new samples of variable ***,the scenario in which mass flow could be measured was4%more precise in predicting mass *** process behaviour of minerals present at concentrations above 0.1%by weight could be accurately *** findings indicate the potential use of this method to minimize the costs of metallurgical testwork while providing in-depth understanding of the recovery behaviour of individual ore ***,the method may be used to establish powerful tools to forecast mineral recoveries for partly new ore types at a running mining operation.

This research evaluates the performance of a Phase Change Material(PCM)battery integrated into the climate system of a new transparent meeting *** main research questions are:a.“Can the performance of the battery be calculated?”and b.“Can the battery reduce the heating and cooling energy demand in a significant way?”The first question is answered in this *** order to be able to answer the second question,especially the way the heat loading in winter should be improved,then more research is *** addition to the thermal battery,which consists of Phase Change Material plates,the climate system has a cross-flow heat exchanger and a heat *** battery should play a central role in closing the thermal balance of the lightweight building,which can be loaded with hot return or cold outdoor *** temperature of the battery plates is monitored by multi-sensors and simulated by the use of PHOENICS(Computational Fluid Dynamics)and *** paper reports reasonable agreement between the numerical predictions and the measurements,with a maximum variance of 10%.The current coefficient of performance for heating and cooling is already high,more than *** is scope for increasing this much further by making use of the very low-pressure difference of the battery(below 25 Pascal),low pressure fans and the ventilation system as a whole.

Antifungal activity and mode of action of nine essential oils(EOs)against *** cells were *** effects of commercial lemon peel,orange peel,tea tree,turpentine,rosemary,peppermint,thyme,oregano and clove oils were determined through Minimum Inhibitory Concentration(MIC),Minimum Fungicidal Concentration(MFC)and inhibition zone *** most effective oil was turpentine *** peel,thyme and oregano oils were also effective,according to MIC and *** zone measurements,also revealed oregano,orange peel,thyme,turpentine and clove oils as most efficient ***,membrane damage of yeast cells was studied by measuring the extracellular pH and conductivity in a concentration dependent *** peel,turpentine,thyme and oregano oils caused a clear increase in extracellular pH of glucose-induced yeast cells and induced an increase in extracellular *** results point to the deterioration of yeast cell membrane integrity upon exposure to *** these oils can be used as food preservatives and pharmaceutical agents,it is very important to understand their mode of action and their main target sites in the *** this research not only opens new perspectives to understand antifungal activity mechanisms of EOs,but also help widen their use.
