Improvement of the Quality of Brazilian Conilon through Wet Processing: A Sensorial Perspective

Conilon coffee represents almost 20% of all coffee production in the Brazilian territory;however, it is inexpressive in relation to the sensory quality when compared to Arabica coffee. It is noteworthy that the coffee from the species Coffea canephora PIERRE has a denser sensorial profile, is less sweet, less acidic and with strong pronunciation of the body at the time of tasting. This study has unprecedentedly applied the use of starter cultures (yeast) to optimize and modify the metabolic pathways and consequently the sensorial quality perceived by Q-graders. The experiments were conducted in a randomized block design with five replicates, in the 3 × 4 factorial scheme, with three fermentation times—24, 48 and 72 hours and four wet processing tests—Washed, Yeast fermentation, Fully washed without yeast and Fully washed with yeast. The sensorial results indicate a new perspective for the application of wet processing with starter cultures for Conilon coffee. They indicate gains in sensory scale, opening a new phase of studies on spontaneous and induced fermentation for Conilon coffee in Brazil and worldwide.

The consumption of specialty coffees has been growing year after year, indicating that several niches and market forms according to the sensorial orientation of the consumers, as well as the cupping tasters and agents are responsible for the composition of blends, and for the physical and sensory classification of the coffees in the industry. This study presented 5 methods of spontaneous and induced fermentation to different North American cupping tasters, in order to evaluate coffee quality potential, based on the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) protocol. During the months of May to July of 2017, 150 coffee samples were evaluated. Initial results indicate that North American cupping tasters evaluated dry fermented coffees using yeast culture as superiors, in the sensorial aspect, than the more conventional methods in Brazil. Such indication opens new discussions on the acceptance of a determined product, followed by the potential for modification of the sensory route as of the fermentation that will affect the attributes.

Effects of submergence in water on seed germination and vigor of the Copaifera lucens(Fabaceae) seedlings

We analyzed the tolerance of Copaifera lucens seeds to sub- mersion in water to assess the use of this species for direct seeding in riparian forest restoration programs. Seeds were submerged in water for 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 days or not submerged （control = 0 days of submer- gence）. For the control and at the end of each period of submersion, germination and seedling vigor tests were carried out. For germination tests, seeds were sown in plastic pots containing sand and kept in labora- tory conditions. The percentage of seed germination, the germination rate and the average germination time were analyzed. For seedlings, total biomass, leaf area, leaf mass per area and leaf area ratio were analyzed. Submersion time drastically affected the dissolved oxygen content and seed germination. Between 4 and 8 days of submersion there was a de- crease from 83.8% to 15.6% in the germination percentage. No seed germination occurred after 16 days of submersion. Although there was a significant decrease in the percentage of seed germination between 4 and 8 days of submersion, seedling vigor was not affected. Seeds of this species were partially tolerant to submersion in water, suggesting that C. lucens is a promising species for direct seeding in riparian forest restora- tion projects.

On the impact of grinding conditions in the flotation of semi-soluble salt-type mineral-containing ores driven by surface or particle geometry effects?

Grinding and flotation processes are often studied independently, despite the well-established grinding influence on flotation performance, which affects not only particle size and thus liberation but also shape and leads to complex changes in pulp chemistry affecting the particle surface properties relevant for selective bubble attachment. Yet, no study jointly investigated these possible causes and many are limited to single mineral flotation. We relate grinding conditions to changes in pulp chemistry and particle surface properties and assess their impact on upgrading. We studied three non-sulfide ores with different feed grades and valuables: scheelite, apatite, and fluorite. These were dry-, wet-, and wet conditionedground before flotation in a laboratory mechanical cell. Results were evaluated with bulk-and particle-specific methodologies. The selectivity of the process is higher after dry grinding for the fluorite and apatite ores and irrelevant for the scheelite ore. Variations in flotation kinetics of individual particles associated to their size and shape are not sufficient to explain these results. The higher concentration of Ca2+and Mg2+observed in the pulp after wet grinding, altering particle surface properties, better explains the phenomenon. Additionally, we demonstrate how particle shape impacts are system specific and related to both entrainment and true flotation.

Testing the robustness of particle-based separation models for the magnetic separation of a complex skarn ore

Physical separation processes are best understood in terms of the behaviour of individual ore ***,while different empirical particle-based separation modelling approaches have been developed,their predictive performance has never been tested under variable process ***,we investigated the predictive performance of a state-of-the-art particle-based separation model under variable feed composition for a laboratory-scale magnetic separation of a skarn *** scenarios were investigated:one in which the mass flow of the different processing streams could be measured and one in which it had to be estimated from *** both scenarios,the predictive models were sufficiently general to predict the process outcomes of new samples of variable ***,the scenario in which mass flow could be measured was4%more precise in predicting mass *** process behaviour of minerals present at concentrations above 0.1%by weight could be accurately *** findings indicate the potential use of this method to minimize the costs of metallurgical testwork while providing in-depth understanding of the recovery behaviour of individual ore ***,the method may be used to establish powerful tools to forecast mineral recoveries for partly new ore types at a running mining operation.

The vertical profile of the ionosphere density plays a significant role in the development of low-latitude Equatorial Plasma Bubbles(EPBs),that in turn lead to ionospheric scintillation which can severely degrade precision and availability of critical users of the Global Navigation Satellite System(GNSS).Accurate estimation of ionospheric delays through vertical electron density profiles is vital for mitigating GNSS errors and enhancing location-based *** objective of this study is to propose a neural network,trained with radio occultation data from the COSMIC-1 mission,that generates average ionospheric electron density profiles during dusk,focusing on the pre-reversal enhancement of the zonal electric *** show that the estimated profiles exhibit a clear seasonal pattern,and reproduce adequately the climatological behavior of the ionosphere,thus presenting strong appeal on ionospheric error attenuation.

Studies on functional performance are important to understand the processes responsible for the evolution of *** trait variation within species influences the energetic cost of locomotion and impacts life history traits,with ecological and evolutionary *** study examined wing morphology correlates of flight performance measured by energetic expenditure in the Seba’s short-tailed bat,Carollia *** the flight experiments,nature caught bats(59 females,57 males)were allowed to fly for 3 min in a *** each flight,thermographic images were taken to measure body temperature,and biophysical models were used to calculate sensible heat loss as a measure of energetic *** morphological traits were measured for each individual and associated with heat loss and power required to fly on performance *** morphological traits explained 7-10%of flight energetic cost,and morphologies with the best performance would save the energy equivalent to 9-30%of total daily *** optimal performance areas within the *** morphospace were consistent with predicted selection trends from the literature.A trade-off between demands for flight speed and maneuverability was *** loading and camber presented sexual *** morphological differences are likely associated with more economical but less maneuverable flight in females,leading them to fly more often in open areas along the forest *** findings demonstrate how small scale changes in wing morphology can affect life history strategies and fitness.

Objective To evaluate the chemical composition and effects of Artemisia vulgaris(AV)hydroalcoholic extract(HEAV)on breast cancer cells(MCF-7 and SKBR-3),chronic myeloid leukemia(K562)and NIH/3T3 *** Phytochemical analysis of HEAV was done by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass(HPLC)*** and cell death studies were performed using trypan blue and Annexin/FITC-7AAD,***-1(Fer-1)and necrostatin-1(Nec-1)were used to assess the mode of HEAV-induced cell death and acetoxymethylester(BAPTA-AM)was used to verify the involvement of cytosolic calcium in this *** calcium measurements were made using *** HEAV decreased the viability of MCF-7,SKBR-3 and K562 cells(P<0.05).The viability of HEAV-treated K562 cells was reduced compared to HEAV-exposed fibroblasts(P<0.05).Treatment of K562 cells with HEAV induced cell death primarily by late apoptosis and necrosis in assays using annexin V-FITC/7-AAD(P<0.05).The use of Nec-1 and Fer-1 increased the viability of K562 cells treated with HEAV relative to cells exposed to HEAV alone(P<0.01).HEAV-induced Ca^(2+)release mainly from lysosomes in K562 cells(P<0.01).Furthermore,BAPTA-AM,an intracellular Ca^(2+)chelator,decreased the number of non-viable cells treated with HEAV(P<0.05).Conclusions HEAV is cytotoxic and activates several modalities of cell death,which are partially dependent on lysosomal release of Ca^(2+).These effects may be related to artemisinin and caffeoylquinic acids,the main compounds identified in HEAV.

Inter-Individual Rapid Force Improvements after Mixed Session and Traditional Periodization in Aging Adults:A Randomized Trial

Background Different periodization models have been widely used to improve maximum and rapid force in aging ***,it is unclear if some specific model can influence the remarkable heterogeneity of responsiveness to rapid torque improvements following resistance *** Compare the effects of mixed session periodization(MSP)and traditional(TP)models on neuromuscular performance and individual responsiveness in aging *** Twenty-two aging men and women(64.6±5.2 years old;1.68±0.1 m;77.8±16.0 kg)completed the intervention *** were assigned into MSP(n=11)or TP(n=11)resistance training for lower *** outcome measures normalized dynamic leg press(5-RM:BM),absolute and normalized knee isometric peak torque(PT and PT:BM)and rate of torque development,and impulse were assessed at baseline and after three blocks of a 9-wk resistance training(3 sessions per week).Thigh leg lean mass was assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry at baseline and after the *** Similar increases were observed for 5-RM:BM(MSP:28.8%±13.5%and TP:26.4%±7.6%,P0.05).Absolute and normalized RTD remained unchanged throughout intervention(P>0.05),but both groups improved impulse(MSP:22.1%±25.7%and TP:12.6%±45.2%,P<0.001).Only MSP responders(n=5)presented significant time effect for absolute RTD(P<0.05)and impulse(P<0.05).Conclusion Although both periodization protocols increased 5-RM:BM and PT,it was not interchangeable through improve-ments in RTD even adopting power training ***,these results suggest a great inter-individual variability following different periodization models for aging people.

AIM:To investigate whether butyrate or glutamine enemas could diminish inflammation in experimental diversion ***:Wistar specific pathogen-free rats were submitted to a Hartmann's end colostomy and treated with enemas containing glutamine,butyrate,or *** were administered twice a week in the excluded segment of the colon from 4 to 12 wk after the surgical ***-up colonoscopy was performed every 4 wk for 12 *** effect of treatment was evaluated using video-endoscopic and histologic scores and measuring interleukin-1β,tumor necrosis factor-alpha,and transforming growth factor beta production in organ cultures by enzyme linked immunosorbent ***:Colonoscopies of the diverted segment showed mucosa with hyperemia,increased number of vessels,bleeding and mucus *** with either glutamine or butyrate induced significant reductions in both colonoscopic(P < 0.02) and histological scores(P < 0.01) and restored the densities of collagen fibers in tissue(P = 0.015;P = 0.001),the number of goblet cells(P = 0.021;P = 0.029),and the rate of apoptosis within the epithelium(P = 0.043;P = 0.011) to normal *** high levels of cytokines in colon explants from rats with diversion colitis significantly decreased to normal values after treatment with butyrate or ***:The improvement of experimental diversion colitis following glutamine or butyrate enemas highlights the importance of specific luminal nutrients in the homeostasis of the colonic mucosa and supports their utilization for the treatment of human diversion colitis.
