The morphological stability of vesicles consisting of an amphiphilic poly(methacrylic acid)- block-poly(methyl methacrylate-random-methacrylic acid) diblock copolymer, PMAA-b-P(MMA-r-MAA), was investigated against the external stresses of pH, salt concentration and polyamine. The worm-like vesicles underwent a partial fusion at pH 12, however, they retained the worm-like shape at pH 13 due to electrostatic repulsion. On the other hand, the spherical vesicles were completely fused at pH 12, transformed into a sheet and did not retain their shape under the higher basic condition. Similarly, the worm-like vesicles retained their morphology in 0.1 mol% solutions of sodium chloride and sodium dodecyl sulfate, while the spherical vesicles caused division and fusion even at much lower concentrations. Poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)(PDMAEMA) transformed the worm-like vesicle into a cleavable sheet, while it changed the spherical vesicles into a sheet without a specific form. It was found that this transformation based on the acid-base interaction between the carboxylic acid of the MAA block and the amine of the PDMAEMA was dependent on the molecular weight of the PDMAEMA. The short PDMAEMA retarded the fusion of the vesicles.

Hepatitis b virus(HbV) is still a worldwide health concern. While divergent factors are involved in its pathogenesis, it is now clear that HbV RNAs, principally templates for viral proteins and viral DNAs, have diverse biological functions involved in HbV pathogenesis. These functions include viral replication, hepatic fibrosis and hepatocarcinogenesis. Depending on the sequence similarities, HbV RNAs may act as sponges for host mi RNAs and may deregulate mi RNA functions, possibly leading to pathological consequences. Some parts of the HbV RNA molecule may function as viralderived mi RNA, which regulates viral replication. HbV DNA can integrate into the host genomic DNA and produce novel viral-host fusion RNA, which may have pathological functions. To date, elimination of HbVderived covalently closed circular DNA has not been achieved. However, RNA transcription silencing may be an alternative practical approach to treat HbVinduced pathogenesis. A full understanding of HbV RNA transcription and the biological functions of HbV RNA may open a new avenue for the development of novel HbV therapeutics.

为了明确水肥一体化灌溉系统中不同土壤水势条件下,施用芽孢杆菌b006菌剂对茄子生长及产量的促进作用,采用灌根法测定施用芽孢杆菌b006菌剂(1′107CFU·mL-1)对盆栽茄子幼苗生长的影响。在日光温室开展两因子、两水平交互田间小区试验,在土壤水势分别为-30 kPa和-40 kPa条件下,设置施用和不施用(对照)芽孢杆菌b006菌剂共4组处理。各处理均施用278.77 kg·hm-2化学肥料(N/P/K为17∶9∶34)。采用电子张力计监测土壤水势,采用水肥一体化自动灌溉系统进行灌溉。分别在移栽时和定植后30 d浇灌浓度为1×107CFU·mL-1的b006菌剂稀释液。35 d后测定茄子的株高、茎粗、叶绿素含量和地上部干质量,50 d后调查茄子开花数,每次施肥前测定土壤速效氮、磷、钾含量,收获期测定产量,收获后测定根长和根干质量。结果表明:施用b006菌剂处理的盆栽茄子株高、茎粗、根长和根干质量比对照分别提高了16.7%、20.7%、28.7%和67.0%。在日光温室大棚试验中,施用b006菌剂处理土壤的速效磷、速效钾含量均低于对照;土壤水势-30 kPa和-40 kPa条件下,施用b006菌剂处理的茄子产量比对照分别提高了24.5%和18.1%。当灌溉量从804.88 m3·hm-2减少到574.91 m3·hm-2时,施用b006菌剂的两处理之间产量无显著差异。综上所述,施用芽孢杆菌b006菌剂可以促进茄子对氮、磷、钾的吸收,提高肥料利用率,从而促进植物生长,甚至在少水灌溉条件下不降低茄子产量。

A case of severe pneumonia caused by multiple bacterial organisms following type b influenza virus infection

A 50-year old woman, without any underlying disease, presented with pneumonia after experiencing flu-like symptoms. Streptococcus pneumoniae was identified on admission through blood culture and urine antigen tests. Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae were present in the sputum culture. Computed tomography showed cavity development in the consolidation areas, typical of staphylococcal pneumonia. The patient was intubated and received mechanical ventilation as respiratory failure progressed. She exhibited improvement following antibiotic therapy. The change in type b influenza virus serum titer confirmed that this was a unique case of severe pneumonia caused by multiple bacterial organisms following type b influenza virus infection.

Molecular Evolution of the Cytochrome b Gene in Geographically Isolated Populations of Oryzias Latipes

The mitochondrial cytochrome b gene was isolated from the caudal fin of Oryzias latipes and PCR was undertaken to determine phylogeny. The nucleotide sequence of the complete cytochrome b gene including the 5＇ and 3＇ ends was 1,143 base pairs （bp） and 1,137 bp encoding 380 and 378 amino acids in the K-11 strain and HS strain, respectively. In addition, higher substitutions both in base and amino acid residues occurred more frequently between the former control （Hd-rR strain） and HS strains than the K-I 1 strain. Approximately similar values in polymorphism, as assessed by restriction endonuclease digestion, were detected when utilizing 20 different enzymes. Therefore, the evolutionary processes were unlikely to involve common ancestors, especially between the K-11 strain and HS strains, in O. latipes populations in Japan. The sequence had been deposited in Genbank Data base under accession number Ab480878 （K-I I strain） and Ab480879 （HS strain）.

We cloned cDNAs for Xenopus aldolases A, b and C. These three aldolase genes are localized on different chromosomes as a single copy gene. In the adult, the aldolase A gene is expressed extensively in muscle tissues, whereas the aldolase b gene is expressed strongly in kidney, liver, stomach and intestine, while the aldolase C gene is expressed in brain, heart and ovary. In oocytes aldolase A and C mRNAs, but not aldolase b mRNA, are extensively transcribed. Thus, aldolase A and C mRNAs, but not b mRNA, occur abundantly in eggs as maternal mRNAs, and strong expression of aldolase b mRNA is seen only after the late neurula stage. We conclude that aldolase A and C mRNAs are major aldolase mRNAs in early stages of Xenopus embryogenesis which proceeds utilizing yolk as the only energy source, aldolase b mRNA, on the other hand, is expressed only later in development in tissues which are required for dietary fructose metabolism.
