Mass Transfer in Infrared Drying of gel-Coated Seeds

In order to contribute for a better understanding of mass transfer in drying of shrinking particles, in this study shrinkage and drying characteristics of sorghum seeds encapsulated into gel-based polymeric matrix were experimentally determined by using infrared (IR) radiation. IR drying of gel coated seeds was carried out at three different temperatures (65℃, 80℃ and 93℃). The shrinkage of the individual particles during drying was quantified by means of the volume and surface area changes evaluated from geometric measurements. The product quality was evaluated in terms of the changes of particle density and percent of cracks in gel coating incurred during drying. Surface area and volume of the gel-seed system decreased about 65% and 80% until the end of the process, respectively, stressing the need to take into account the surface area changes to calculate water flux density as function of moisture content and obtain an accurate interpretation of the drying mechanisms well as to include the volume shrinkage in mass transfer models to determine reliable values of moisture diffusivity. The IR drying behavior of gel-coated seeds was then characterized by the presence of three drying periods: heating up, constant moisture flux and falling moisture flux. Accelerated drying of gel coated seeds was obtained by applying higher IR radiation intensities. The effect of IR source temperature on the particle shrinkage was more pronounced at the constant moisture flux period and practically negligible at the decreasing moisture flux period. Neglecting shrinkage of individual coated-seeds during IR drying led to an erroneous absence of constant flux period and overestimation of the mass transfer by diffusion. Apparent density of the particles was greater at low-temperature IR drying than at high-temperature IR drying. Coated particles keep their original geometry, but a significant cracking of gel coating was observed at rapid drying rate conditions.

Knowledge graphs are employed in several tasks,such as question answering and recommendation systems,due to their ability to represent relationships between *** constructing such a graphs,however,remains an unresolved challenge within knowledge *** tackle this challenge,we propose CtxKg,a method specifically aimed at extracting knowledge graphs in a context of limited resources in which the only input is a set of unstructured text *** is based on OpenIE(a relationship triple extraction method)and BERT(a language model)and contains four stages:the extraction of relationship triples directly from text;the identification of synonyms across triples;the merging of similar entities;and the building of bridges between knowledge graphs of different *** method distinguishes itself from those in the current literature(i)through its use of the parse tree to avoid the overlapping entities produced by base implementations of OpenIE;and(ii)through its bridges,which create a connected network of graphs,overcoming a limitation similar methods have of one isolated graph per *** compare our method to two others by generating graphs for movie articles from Wikipedia and contrasting them with benchmark graphs built from the OMDb movie *** results suggest that our method is able to improve multiple aspects of knowledge graph *** also highlight the critical role that triple identification and named-entity recognition have in improving the quality of automatically generated graphs,suggesting future paths for ***,we apply CtxKg to build BlabKg,a knowledge graph for the Blue Amazon,and discuss possible improvements.

Forest management for optimizing soil protection:a landscape-level approach

Background:Soil erosion is still identified as the main cause of land degradation worldwide,threatening soil functions and driving several research and policy efforts to reverse *** are commonly associated to some of the most successful land-use systems to achieve soil protection goals,but the extent to which forest ecosystems reduce erosion risks can largely depend on management decisions and associated silvicultural *** tools can assist foresters in solving the complex planning problem they face,concerning the demand for different,and often conflicting,ecosystem services.A resource capability model(RCM),based on a linear programming approach,was built and solved for a forest landscape management problem in Northwest Portugal,over a 90-years planning horizon,divided in 10-years ***:Timber provision and soil erosion were found to be in *** management alternatives included in the model were proven to be sufficiently flexible to obtain the desired level of timber yield,both in volume and even distribution along the planning horizon,while ensuring lower levels of soil loss estimates(below 35 Mg·ha^(−1)·year^(−1)).However,under climate change conditions,compatible with an increasing greenhouse gases emission scenario,potential landscape soil erosion may be enhanced up to 46 Mg·ha^(−1)·year^(−1) in critical ***:Soil conservation concerns in landscape-level forest management planning can be addressed by LPbased optimization *** providing an optimal management solution at landscape level,this approach enables a comprehensive analysis of the RCM,possible trade-offs and potential changes towards uncertainties.

Spices are defined as any aromatic condiment of plant origin used to alter the flavor and aroma of foods. Besides flavor and aroma, many spices have antioxidant activity, mainly related to the presence in cloves of phenolic compounds, such as flavonoids, terpenoids and eugenol. In turn, the most common uses of gum arabic are in the form of powder for addition to soft drink syrups, cuisine and baked goods, specifically to stabilize the texture of products, increase the viscosity of liquids and promote the leavening of baked products (e.g., cakes). Both eugenol, extracted from cloves, and gum arabic, extracted from the hardened sap of two species of the Acacia tree, are dietary constituents routinely consumed virtually throughout the world. Both of them are also widely used medicinally to inhibit oxidative stress and genotoxicity. The prevention arm of the study included groups: Ia, IIa, IIIa, Iva, V, VI, VII, VIII. Once a week for 20 weeks, the controls received saline s.c. while the experimental groups received DMH at 20 mg/kg s.c. During the same period and for an additional 9 weeks, the animals received either water, 10% gA, EUg, or 10% gA + EUg by gavage. The treatment arm of the study included groups Ib, IIb, IIIb e IVb, IX, X, XI, XII). Once a week for 20 weeks, the controls received saline s.c. while the experimental groups received DMH at 20 mg/kg s.c. During the subsequent 9 weeks, the animals received either water, 10% gA, EUg or 10% gA + EUg by gavage. The novelty of this study is the investigation of their use alone and together for the prevention and treatment of experimental colorectal carcinogenesis induced by dimethylhydrazine. Our results show that the combined use of 10% gum arabic and eugenol was effective, with antioxidant action in the colon, as well as reducing oxidative stress in all colon segments and preventing and treating genotoxicity in all colon segments. Fractionation of Zn,Cd and Pb in a Tropical Soil After Nine-Year Sewage Sludge Applications

A long-term field experiment was carried out in the experiment farm of the Sao Paulo State University,Brazil,to evaluate the phytoavailability of Zn,Cd and Pb in a Typic Eutrorthox soil treated with sewage sludge for nine consecutive years,using the sequential extraction and organic matter fractionation *** 2005-2006,maize(Zea mays L.) was used as test plants and the experimental design was in randomized complete blocks with four treatments and five *** treatments consisted of four sewage sludge rates(in a dry basis):0.0(control,with mineral fertilization),45.0,90.0 and 127.5 t ha-1,annually for nine *** maize sowing,the sewage sludge was manually applied to the soil and incorporated at 10 cm *** samples(0-20 cm layer) for Zn,Cd and Pb analysis were collected 60 days after *** successive applications of sewage sludge to the soil did not affect heavy metal(Cd and Pb) fractions in the soil,with exception of Zn *** Zn,Cd and Pb distributions in the soil were strongly associated with humin and residual fractions,which are characterized by stable chemical ***,Cd and Pb in the soil showed low phytoavailability after nine-year successive applications of sewage sludge to the soil.
