microplastics are emergent contaminants threatening aquatic organisms including aquacultured *** study investigated the effects of high-density polyethylene(HDPE,100 to 125 mm)on yellow perch(Perca flavescens)based on integrative evaluation including growth performance,nutritional status,nutrient metabolism,fish health,and gut microbial *** test diets(0,1,2,4,or 8 g HDPE/100 g diet)containing 41%protein and 10.5%lipid were fed to juvenile perch(average body weight,25.9±0.2 g;n=15)at a feeding rate of 1.5%to 2.0%body weight *** feeding trial was conducted in a flow-through water system for 9 wk with 3 tanks per treatment and 15 yellow perch per *** mortality or HDPE accumulation in the fish was found in any *** gain and condition factor of fish were not significantly impacted by HDPE(P>0.05).Compared to the control group,fish fed the 8%HDPE diet had significantly decreased levels of protein and ash(Pmatic index value,hepatocyte size,and liver glycogen level were increased,but lipid content was reduced in the liver *** to the control treatment,fish fed the 8%HDPE diet had significant accumulations of total bile acids and different metabolism pathways such as bile acid biosynthesis,pyruvate metabolism,and carnitine *** enterocyte necrosis was documented in the foregut of fish fed the 2%or 8%HDPE diet;and significant cell sloughing was observed in the midgut and hindgut of fish fed the 8%HDPE *** fed the 2%HDPE diet harbored different microbiota communities compared to the control *** study demonstrates that HDPE ranging from 100 to 125 mm in feed can be evacuated by yellow perch with no impact on ***,dietary exposure to HDPE decreased whole fish nutrition quality,altered nutrient metabolism and the intestinal histopathology as well as microbiota community of yellow *** results indicate that extende

Radiation-Induced Liposarcoma of the Groin in a Patient with Prior Vulvar Cancer: A Case Report and Literature Review

Radiation-induced sarcomas (RIS) are rare but severe long-term complications of radiotherapy (RT). They typically arise years after exposure to ionizing radiation used to treat primary malignancies and complicate patient outcomes. Determining the risk associated with these radiation-induced cancers is challenging due to confounding factors such as lifestyle and genetic predisposition. Liposarcomas, which are the most common type of soft tissue sarcomas, originate from adipose tissue and can develop as a late complication of RT. Although they account for a significant portion of soft tissue sarcomas, radiation-induced liposarcomas are still considered rare, making them a noteworthy diagnostic and therapeutic concern. In this report, we present a rare case of radiation-induced dedifferentiated liposarcoma arising 12 years after RT for vulvar cancer. The patient presented with a mass in the groin, which was initially suspected to be a local recurrence. Imaging studies revealed a suspicious lesion on PET/CT, while mRI showed no significant findings. Histopathological evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of dedifferentiated liposarcoma. Surgical resection was performed with a focus on achieving negative margins. A literature review identified nine similar cases, with five being pleomorphic liposarcomas. The average time to presentation was 15 years (interval 3 - 47 years), with a mean radiation dose of 62 Gy. This case highlights the importance of long-term follow-up for cancer survivors and the need for vigilance in diagnosing secondary malignancies following RT.

New discriminant-function-based multidimensional discrimination of mid-ocean ridge and oceanic plateau

From a compilation of geochemical data for the discrimination of the tectonic settings of mid-ocean ridge(mOR;3730 samples)and oceanic plateau(OP;3656 samples),we present two new discriminant functions and diagrams obtained from censored multivariate discordant outlier-free *** different sets of data(original concentrations as well as isometric log-ratio transformed(ilr)variables;all 10 major(m)elements as well as all 10 major and 6 trace elements mT)were used to evaluate the quality of discrimination from linear discriminant analysis(LDA)and canonical *** selected multidimensional models ilrm(9 ilr transformed variables of multi-normally distributed 10 major elements)and ilrmT(15 ilr transformed variables of multi-normally distributed combined 10 major and 6 trace elements),considered as the best or most representative(total of5650 samples for ilrm and 2858 for ilrmT),provided percent success values,respectively,of 80.9%for the mOR and 81.1%for the OP(ilrm)and 88.5%for the mOR and 90.1%for the OP(ilrmT).Both processes(log-ratio transformation and multi-normality)rendered the percent success values similar for both groups(mOR and OP).The respective discriminant functions were successfully used for four tests from known tectonic settings and four application cases(two for ophiolites and two for Precambrian rocks),documenting thus the utility of the new discrimination procedure for the mOR and OP tectonic ***,we showed that our multidimensional procedure is robust against analytical errors or uncertainties,as well as post-emplacement compositional changes caused by element mobility from both low or high temperature *** robustness against the gain or loss of a single element at a time was also documented,from which the ilrmT model was evaluated as more robust than the ilrm model.A new online computer program mOROPdisc was written in Java Framework ZK,which is freely available for use at our web portal http://***

Thermal and photoperiodic requirements of the seedling stage of three tropical forest species

Air temperature and photoperiod play an important role in the seedling development for tropical forest *** variables are sensitive to climate,and so evaluating thermal and photoperiodic effects on seedling development is fundamental,especially for climate change *** to quantify thermal time and the energy required for plants to reach a development stage include air temperature and cardinal *** photoperiod will also affect physiological reactions of a plant and thus its *** we evaluated the six thermal time methods widely used to compute thermal requirement,and identified the influence of the photoperiod from the 2015 and2016 growing seasons and 12 sowing dates in Itajubá,minas Gerais state,Brazil,on seedling development of three native tropical forest species Psidium guajava L.(myrtaceae),Citharexylum myrianthum Cham.(Verbenaceae),and Bixa orellana L.(Bixaceae).The method used to quantify thermal time influenced the analytical results of seedling development;the one that considered three cardinal temperatures and compared them with the mean air temperature(method5)performed better in computing thermal *** influence of photoperiod on seedling development was inconclusive for the three species,but all three developed better in mild temperatures(between 13.3℃and 26.9℃)with a photoperiod shorter than 13 h.

Using density functional calculations to elucidate atomic ordering of Pd-Rh nanoparticles at sizes relevant for catalytic applications

Pd-Rh nanoparticles are known to easily undergo surface restructuring in reactive environment. This study quantifies, with the help of density functional(DFT) calculations and a novel topological approach, atomic ordering and surface segregation effects in Pd-Rh particles with compositions 1:3, 1:1 and 3:1 containing up to 201 atoms(ca. 1.7 nm). The obtained data are used to reliably optimise energetically preferred atomic orderings in inaccessible by DFT Pd-Rh particles containing thousands of atoms and exhibiting sizes exceeding 5 nm, which are typical for catalytic metal particles. It is outlined, how segregation effects on the surface arrangement of Pd-Rh nanoalloy catalysts induced by adsorbates can be evaluated in a simple way within the present modelling setup.

Carbon nanotubes targeted to the tumor microenvironment inhibit metastasis in a preclinical model of melanoma

Despite notable progress in cancer therapy,metastatic diseases continue to be the primary cause of cancer-related ***-walled carbon nanotubes(mWCNTs)can enter tissues and cells and interfere with the dynamics of the cytoskeletal nanofilaments *** endows them with intrinsic anti-tumoral effects comparable to those of microtubule-binding chemotherapies such as Taxol®.In this study,our focus was on exploring the potential of oxidized mWCNTs in selectively targeting the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor(VEGFR).Our objective was to evaluate their effectiveness in inhibiting metastatic growth by inducing anti-proliferative,anti-migratory,and cytotoxic effects on both cancer and tumor microenvironment *** findings demonstrated a significant reduction of over 80%in malignant melanoma lung metastases and a substantial enhancement in overall animal welfare following intravenous administration of the targeted biodegradable ***,the combination of these nanomaterials with the conventional chemotherapy agent Taxol®yielded a remarkable 90%increase in the antimetastatic *** results highlight the promising potential of this combined therapeutic approach against metastatic disease and are of paramount importance as metastasis is responsible for nearly 60,000 deaths each year.

Efficacy of medium-chain fatty acid salts distilled from coconut oil against two enteric pathogen challenges in weanling piglets

Background:The search for alternatives to antibiotics in pig production has increased the interest in natural resources with antimicrobial properties,such as medium-chain fatty acids(mCFA)as in-feed *** study evaluated the potential of a novel blend of mCFA salts(DIC)from distilled coconut oil with a lauric acid content to reduce enteropathogens and control intestinal diseases around *** experimental disease models were implemented in early-weaned piglets,consisting of two oral challenges:Salmonella Typhimurium(1.2×10~8 CFU)or enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli(ETEC)F4(1.5×10~9 CFU).The parameters assessed were:animal performance,clinical signs,pathogen excretion,intestinal fermentation,immune-inflammatory response,and intestinal ***:The Salmonella challenge promoted an acute course of diarrhea,with most of the parameters responding to the challenge,whereas the ETEC F4 challenge promoted a mild clinical course.A consistent antipathogenic effect of DIC was observed in both trials in the hindgut,with reductions in Salmonella *** counts in the cecum(P=0.03)on d 8 post-inoculation(PI)(Salmonella trial),and of enterobacteria and total coliform counts in the ileum and colon(Pmicrobiota(16 S rRNA gene sequencing),this additive tended(P=0.13)to reduce the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio and enriched Fibrobacteres after the Salmonella *** the ETEC F4 challenge,DIC prompted structural changes in the ecosystem with increases in Dialister,and a trend(P=0.14)to increase the Veillonellaceae *** parameters such as the intestinal fermentation products or serum pro-inflammatory mediators were not modified by DIC supplementation,nor were the histological *** the intraepithelial lymphocyte(IEL)counts were lowered by DIC in animals challenged with Salmonella(P=0.07).With ETEC F4,the IEL counts were higher with DIC on d 8 PI(P=0.08).Conclusions:This study c

Over the decades,the spin dynamics of a large set of lanthanide complexes have been ***-based molecular nanomagnets are bistable spin systems,generally conceptualised as classical bits,but many lanthanide complexes have also been presented as candidate quantum bits(qubits).Here,we offer a third alternative and model them as probabilistic bits(p-bits),where their stochastic behaviour constitutes a computational resource instead of a *** an ad-hoc modelling tool for molecular spin p-bits and molecular nanomagnets,we simulate a minimal p-bit network under realistic ***,we go back to a recently published dataset and screen the best lanthanide complexes for p-bit behaviour,lay out the performance of the different lanthanide ions and chemical families and offer some chemical design considerations.
