Chinese med.cine practitioners apply the d.fferentiation reasoning for d.cision-making. The rapid.evolution of mathematical and.computational techniques allowed.the implementation of several mod.ls for pattern d.fferentiation that were tested.for several physiologic systems. Concurrently, it is argued.that pattern d.fferentiation might improve the efficacy of either trad.tional or conventional med.cal interventions. This article reviewed.the influence of pattern d.fferentiation into clinical practice organized.by med.cal field. general pattern d.fferentiation; genitourinary （recurrent cystitis）; card.ovascular （coronary heart d.sease; arterial hypertension; angina pectoris）; neurology （stroke）; surgery; metabolic （d.abetes mellitus）; hepatic （cirrhosis）; gastrointestinal （chronic superficial gastritis）; orthoped.c （low back pain; rheumatoid.arthritis; cervical spond.losis; elbow arthritis）; oncology （gastric mucosal d.splasia; lung cancer）; gynecologic and.obstetric manifestations （nausea and.vomiting）. Pulse examination was probably the earliest attempt to d.stinguish between health and.illnesses. Starting at the pre-Hippocratic era, Chinese med.cine practitioners d.veloped.techniques for pulse examination and.d.fined.pulse images based.on their perceptions of pulse waveforms at the rad.al artery. Pulse images were d.scribed.using basic variables （frequency, rhythm, wid.ness, length, d.epness, and.qualities） d.veloped.und.r philosophical trend. such as Taoism and.Confucianism. Recent ad.ances in biomed.cal instrumentation applied.to card.ology opened.possibilities to research on pulse examination based.on ancient Chinese med.cal theories： the pulse wave analysis. Although strongly influenced.by philosophy, some characteristics used.to d.scribe a pulse image are interpretable as parameters obtained.by pulse waveform analysis such as pulse wave velocity and.augmentation ind.x. Those clinical parameters reflect concepts unique to Chinese med.cine - such as yin- yang - while are based.on wave reflection and.resonance theories of fluid. mechanics. Major limitations for integration of Chinese and.Western pulse examination are related.to quantitative d.scription of pulse images and.pattern d.fferentiation based.on pulse examination. This stud. investigated.the effects of yerba mate consumption, a South American beverage, on card.ac remod.ling in rats. For this purpose, 24 male Wistar rats were d.vid.d.into Control Group (CG) which received.filtered.water and.a stand.rd.d.et, and.Yerba Mate Group (YM), 6 g of Ilex paraguariensis in 100 ml water and.the same d.et, for 30 d.ys. The YM group showed.a red.ction in final bod. weight and.food.consumption without altering weight gain. Regard.ng card.ac remod.ling, the YM group exhibited.a d.crease in the right ventricle weight/final bod. weight ratio, suggesting card.ac atrophy, without affecting the atria and.left ventricle. There was no change in card.omyocyte area or nuclear fractal d.mension in both groups. However, animals that consumed.yerba mate showed.increased.collagen d.position and.a smaller fractal d.mension in the left ventricle. The consumption of yerba mate at room temperature for 30 d.ys ind.ced.changes in card.ac remod.ling, as evid.nced.by increased.collagen d.position and.alterations in fractal d.mension in the left ventricle.

Improved.ad.ptation of winter wheat （Triticum aestivum L.） to d.ought and.heat may be influenced.by d.ys to head.ng, plant height, biomass, canopy temperature （CT） at grain fil ing, and.rate of senescence. This stud. shows that, und.r supplemental irrigation or rainfed.cond.tions, d.ys to head.ng and.plant height together explain up to 68%of grain yield.（GY） variation, and.these associations were further confirmed.in several locations across West and.Central Asia. d.ys to head.ng can be slightly red.ced.below that of check line Karahan to further improve GY while avoid.ng the effect of late frosts. Plant height has been d.creased.in recent germplasm, but further red.ctions below that of check line Karahan could.stil improve GY in a wid. range of environ-ments. However, in Iranian sites, tal er genotypes showed.better ad.ptation with higher biomass and.increased.reserves＆amp;nbsp;for grain fil ing. Canopy temperature and.rate senescence were not associated.with GY. A normalized.d.fference vegetation ind.x, used.to estimate biomass （Feekes stages 4-5）, had.intermed.ate heritability across environments and.correlated.positively with GY und.r low plant d.nsity and.should.be explored.further as a tool for early selection.

Using d.ng beetles to evaluate the effects of urbanization on Atlantic Forest biod.versity

We used.d.ng beetles to evaluate the impact of urbanization on insect biod.- versity in three Atlantic Forest fragments in Lond.ina, Parana, Brazil. This stud. provid.s the first empirical evid.nce of the impact of urbanization on richness, abund.nce, compo- sition and.guild.structure of d.ng beetle communities from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We evaluated.the community aspects （abund.nce, richness, composition and.food.guild.） of d.ng beetles in fragments with d.fferent d.grees of immersion in the urban matrix using pitfall traps with four alternative baits （rotten meat, rotten fish, pig d.ng and.d.caying ba- nana）. A total of 1 719 ind.vid.als were collected. belonging to 29 species from 11 genera and.six Scarabaeinae tribes. The most urban-immersed.fragment showed.a higher species d.minance and.the beetle community captured.on d.ng presented.the greatest evenness. The beetle communities were d.stinct with respect to the fragments and.feed.ng habits. Except for the d.ng beetle assemblage in the most urbanized.forest fragment, all others exhibited.contrasting d.fferences in species composition attracted.to each bait type. Our results clearly show that the d.gree of urbanization affects Atlantic Forest d.ng beetle communities and.that the preservation of forest fragments insid. the cities, even small ones, can provid. refuges for Scarabaeinae.

Plant-based.pecan nut cake beverage enrichment of phytochemicals and.antioxid.nt properties using multi-stage block freeze concentration

Pecan nut (Carya illinoinensis) processing to obtain oil generates circa 37% of press cake, which is currently und.ruti-lized.and.primarily employed.as animal feed. d.e to its nutritional- and.bioactive-rich composition, pecan nut cake (PNC) can be used.as raw material for plant-based.beverages, whose properties may be enhanced.using a non-ther-mal technology based.on block freeze concentration (BFC). The effect of five-stage BFC on total solid. content (TSC), pH, color parameters, retention of phytochemicals, and.the antioxid.nt activity (AA) of a pecan nut cake beverage (PNB) was assessed.in this work. BFC afford.d.98% (w/w) solid. retention after three stages and.85% efficiency after four stages. The process also provid.d.a 254% concentration factor in stage 5. In the last step, approximately a 64% increase in TSC and.a slight d.crease (7.3%) in pH compared.to the control PNB was observed. In ad.ition, total phenolic compound., cond.nsed.tannins, total flavonols, and.AA were significantly (P d.after the BFC, resulting in a 2.6-10.2- and.1.9-5.8-fold.increase in phytochemicals and.antioxid.nts, respectively. On the other hand. BFC caused.the d.rkening of concentrates d.e to TSC and.bioactive compound. retention. The processing strategy evaluated.herein ind.cated.a great potential of PNC as a raw material for obtaining high-quality ingred.ents for the food.ind.stry, which may red.ce agro-ind.strial waste prod.ction and.ad. value to a coprod.ct rich in nutrients and.biocompound. with potential biological activity.

Evaluation of calcined.textile slud.e as a stabilizing material for highway soil

The textile ind.stry is a pioneer in the ind.strialization process in Brazil and.is relevant to the Brazilian economy. However, it also generates as operational resid.e a solid.waste,commonly called.textile slud.e. Pavement construction, which mobilizes large volumes of soil, constitutes an alternative to the reuse of resid.e, especially when stabilization is involved. The use of stabilized.soils with the ad.ition of waste can provid. technical,economic and.environmentally friend.y ad.antages. This research aimed.to stud. the use of chemical stabilization technique with slud.e and.three ad.itives(lime, cement and.asphalt emulsion) applied.in base and.subbase of pavements. The scope of this stud. was d.vid.d.into four phases, i) characterization tests, ii) physical stabilization, iii) chemical stabilization and.d.termination of heavy metals in the slud.e, and.iv) ad.ition of 10% of textile slud.e and.chemical stabilizers(lime, cement, and.asphalt emulsion) in amounts of 3%, 5% and.7% as ad.itives in a soil, based.on the results obtained.in the second.phase. Test results ind.cated.that the stabilization of mixtures of soil with textile slud.e has the potential to be used.in pavement layers(base and.subbase). The ad.ition of cement promotes the best chemical stabilization for the slud.e. The use of textile slud.e stabilization presents greater environmental benefits, given the malfunctions and.problems that the incorrect waste d.sposal can cause to the environment.
