Cascading effect of source limitation on the granivore-mediated seed dispersal of Korean pine(Pinus koraiensis)in secondary forest ecosystems

Background:Granivore-mediated seed dispersal is susceptible to changes in seed availability and silvicultural management,which alters synzoochorous interactions in the antagonism-mutualism continuum and affects the seed dispersal effectiveness(SDE),and eventually,the plant recruitment.We conducted a whole-year study of seed addi-tion to quantify the granivores-Korean pine(Pinus koraiensis)synzoochorous interactions and the SDE in the same sec-ondary forests with two treatments.Both treatments had seed source limitations:one was caused by the disappear-ance of Korean pine due to the historical disturbance,the other by pinecone harvesting in Korean pine plantations adjacent to the secondary forests.Thinning with different intensities(control,25%,and 50%)were also performed to further explore the synzoochorous interactions and SDE in response to silvicultural management in the second type of forests.Results:Source limitation increased the proportion of pre-and post-dispersal seed predation,and made the granivores-Korean pine interaction shift more towards antagonism,with the estimated SDE of 2.31 and 3.60,respec-tively,for the secondary forests without and with Korean pine.Thinning with different intensities did not alleviate the reactions towards antagonism but altered SDE;granivores occurrence decreased,but the proportion of pre-and post-dispersal seed predation increased,resulting in a fivefold decreased seedling recruitment in 25%thinning(the lowest SDE of 0.26).Conclusion:The source limitation coupling thinning biased the synzoochorous interactions more towards antago-nism and significantly lowered granivore-mediated SDE,which limited the successful recruitment of Korean pine in secondary forests.Forest managers should control pinecone harvesting,protect the synzoochorous interaction,and take into account masting event for Korean pine regeneration in the future.

Quantitative approach to sediment source identification by using magnetic diagnosis model

A sequential quantitative approach to sediment source ascription is presented based on mineral magnetic measurements. Rhode River catchment (USA) and lsabel Ⅱ reservoir catchment (Spain) were taken as the examples for developing the magnetic diagnosis model. The multi-parameter cluster analysis was used to classify the sediment source with respect to their magnetic properties,multi-variable mixing model to link magnetic measurement of mixtures with their source component proportions, and linear programming to determine the sediment source components. It has been shown by these two experiments that the magnetic diagnosis model is successful for the quantitative sediment source ascription. The results correspond well with the relative environmental change proxy.

Effects of harvest intensity on the marketable organ yield,growth and reproduction of non-timber forest products(NTFPs):implication for conservation and sustainable utilization of NTFPs

Background:Non-timber forest products(NTFPs)are an important part of forest biodiversity,and the subsistence and trade of local people,especially in less developed countries.Because of the high ecological and economic value,NTFPs have faced the problem of over-exploitation,and the key to solve this problem is to determine the feasible way of sustainable utilization of NTFPs.Harvest intensity is one of the most important and easily controlled utilization factors,which can greatly influence the plant individual survival,growth and reproductive performances,and even the population structure and dynamics.Therefore,we chose two common and important NTFPs species with different marketable parts(i.e.,Acanthopanax senticosus with tender leaves and Aralia elata with tender buds)as our study objects.Aiming to determine the optimum harvest intensity for sustainably utilizing both NTFPs species,five levels of harvest intensity treatments(i.e.,control,light,medium,high and severe)were designed to assess the effects of harvest intensity on their marketable organ yield,plant growth and reproductive performances.Results:The biomass growth rates of marketable organ and plant growth of A.senticosus under light harvest intensity treatment were significantly higher than those under other harvest intensities.The plant height growth and 1000-seed weight of A.elata under severe harvest intensity treatment were significantly lower than those under control treatment.Conclusions:The light harvest intensity with 25% leaf removal and the high harvest intensity with all terminal buds harvested are the optimum harvest intensity to maintain the sustainable utilization of A.senticosus and A.elata,respectively.These findings could provide managers with basic but practical guidance for making decisions about the sustainable harvest management plan for the cultivated NTFPs species,and further provide a theoretical basis for managers to establish the harvest regulations for wild NTFPs species.Consequently,the local residents or communities can impr

Iron reduction in tidal flat sediment indicated by magnetic measurements and its significance in the study of heavy metal pollution

Magnetic measurements and chemical analysis were conducted on the anoxic core sediment from the tidal flat along the southern bank of Yangtze Estuary. The synchronous increase in magnetite and heavy metal concentration at a depth of 54 cm is revealed, which reflects the anthropogenic input due to the near shore sewage discharge. However, the heavy metal concentration declines at the top of sediment column (4—20 cm) with the reduction of fine magnetite grains, as indicated by the magnetic measurements. It is inferred that selective dissolution of finer magnetite happens under the reduced environment. Such a phenomenon is significant for the heavy metal pollution study in the tidal flat sediments.

Synchrotron micro-scale measurement of metal distributions in Phragmites australis and Typha latifolia root tissue from an urban brownfield site

Liberty State Park in New Jersey,USA,is a ＂brownfield＂ site containing various levels of contaminants.To investigate metal uptake and distributions in plants on the brownfield site,Phragmites australis and Typha latifolia were collected in Liberty State Park during the growing season（May–September）in 2011 at two sites with the high and low metal loads,respectively.The objective of this study was to understand the metal（Fe,Mn,Cu,Pb and Zn）concentration and spatial distributions in P.australis and T.latifolia root systems with micro-meter scale resolution using synchrotron X-ray microfluorescence（μXRF）and synchrotron X-ray computed microtomography（μCMT）techniques.The root structure measurement by synchrotron μCMT showed that high X-ray attenuation substance appeared in the epidermis.Synchrotron μXRF measurement showed that metal concentrations and distributions in the root cross-section between epidermis and vascular tissue were statistically different.Significant correlations were found between metals（Cu,Mn,Pb and Zn）and Fe in the epidermis,implying that metals were scavenged by Fe oxides.The results from this study suggest that the expression of metal transport and accumulation within the root systems may be element specific.The information derived from this study can improve our current knowledge of the wetland plant ecological function in brownfield remediation.

Effects of continuous nitrogen addition on microbial properties and soil organic matter in a Larix gmelinii plantation in China

Continuous increases in anthropogenic nitrogen（N） deposition are likely to change soil microbial properties, and ultimately to affect soil carbon（C） storage.Temperate plantation forests play key roles in C sequestration, yet mechanisms underlying the influences of N deposition on soil organic matter accumulation are poorly understood. This study assessed the effect of N addition on soil microbial properties and soil organic matter distribution in a larch（Larix gmelinii） plantation. In a 9-year experiment in the plantation, N was applied at100 kg N ha-1 a-1 to study the effects on soil C and N mineralization, microbial biomass, enzyme activity, and C and N in soil organic matter density fractions, and organic matter chemistry. The results showed that N addition had no influence on C and N contents in whole soil. However,soil C in different fractions responded to N addition differently. Soil C in light fractions did not change with N addition, while soil C in heavy fractions increased significantly. These results suggested that more soil C in heavy fractions was stabilized in the N-treated soils. However,microbial biomass C and N and phenol oxidase activity decreased in the N-treated soils and thus soil C increased in heavy fractions. Although N addition reduced microbial biomass and phenol oxidase activity, it had little effect on soil C mineralization, hydrolytic enzyme activities, d13 C value in soil and C–H stretch, carboxylates and amides, and C–O stretch in soil organic matter chemistry measured by Fourier transform infrared spectra. We conclude that N addition（1） altered microbial biomass and activity without affecting soil C in light fractions and（2） resulted in an increase in soil C in heavy fractions and that this increase was controlled by phenol oxidase activity and soil N availability.

植物根系深藏于地下,由于缺乏有效的观测方法,制约了对根系的了解。以落叶松人工林为研究对象,根据扫描根窗法对落叶松人工林细根长期观测案例,介绍扫描根窗法在野外原位观测细根动态的过程。结果表明:在深秋季节安装根窗,根窗安装扰动后恢复期为1 a,经过冻融交替和一个生长季后,细根现存量迅速恢复且趋于稳定;通过观察发现吸收根现存量峰值多出现在春季和初夏,而运输根峰值多出现在秋季;野外根窗法与微根管法相比可清晰的观测到细根的完整分枝结构,将高度异质性的细根群体细分为不同根序或功能类型,为区分不同细根功能和分枝等级提供了手段。

Comparative proteomics reveals the response and adaptation mechanisms of white Hypsizygus marmoreus against the biological stress caused by Penicillium

White Hypsizygus marmoreus is a popular edible mushroom.Its mycelium is easy to be contaminated by Penicillium,which leads to a decrease in its quality and yield.Penicillium could compete for limited space and nutrients through rapid growth and produce a variety of harmful gases,such as benzene,aldehydes,phenols,etc.,to inhibit the growth of H.marmoreus mycelium.A series of changes occurred in H.marmoreus proteome after contamination when detected by the label-free tandem mass spectrometry(MS/MS)technique.Some proteins with up-regulated expression worked together to participate in some processes,such as the non-toxic transformation of harmful gases,glutathione metabolism,histone modification,nucleotide excision repair,clearing misfolded proteins,and synthesizing glutamine,which were mainly used in response to biological stress.The proteins with down-regulated expression are mainly related to the processes of ribosome function,protein processing,spliceosome,carbon metabolism,glycolysis,and gluconeogenesis.The reduction in the function of these proteins affected the production of the cell components,which might be an adjustment to adapt to growth retardation.This study further enhanced the understanding of the biological stress response and the growth restriction adaptation mechanisms in edible fungi.It also provided a theoretical basis for protein function exploration and edible mushroom food safety research.
