Size analysis of slag eye formed by gas blowing in ladle refining

The formation of slag eye in a gas stirred ladle was studied through cold models and industrial trials. In the cold model,water and sodium tungstate solution were employed to simulate liquid steel,and silicon oil was employed to simulate slag. The simulation results revealed that the gas flow rate and bath height had strong effects on the slag eye size. In particular,the thickness of slag layer played a strong role in the slag eye size. In addition,the slag eye could not be formed when the thickness of the top layer was more than 4 cm in water-silicone oil model.Besides,the section area of vessel had a great impact on the slag eye size. Industrial trials results showed a similar trend that the gas flow rate was very significant on the slag eye size. The predictions of the existing models showed larger predictions deviations compared with the experimental data. Moreover,a new model without fitting parameters was developed based on force balance and mathematical derivation,and verified by the experimental data. The new model provides the prediction with small deviations by comparing with the data acquired from cold models and industrial trials.

Pivotal Factors Concerned in Design of Acupuncture Clinical Research:From Two Articles in JAMA

Two randomized controlled trials of acupuncture concerning polycystic ovary syndrome（PCOS） and stress urinary incontinence（SUI） were published simultaneously in the 24 th issue, 2017 of The Journal of the American Medical Association（JAMA）. A trial involving PCOS indicated that active acupuncture did not increase live birth compared with sham acupuncture; meanwhile, another trial referring to SUI showed that electroacupuncture resulted in less urine leakage compared with sham electroacupuncture. With an eye to the negative and positive results of acupuncture, three pivotal factors should be contemplated：（1） proper illness for acupuncture, that is, a problem need to be solved in current medical science, and acupuncture may really work for it;（2） proper pre-studied primary outcome, which is better be objective and repeatedly measurable to reveal the therapeutic effect of acupuncture truly and objectively;（3） proper sham control, which can blind the patients to the upmost extent with minimal biological effects. Through the publication of clinical trials of acupuncture in high-impact journals in recent years, researchers should have confidence in their clinical trials by pondering over these three pivotal factors.

The lattice of the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility(SSRF) storage ring was upgraded in the Phase-II beamline project, and thus far, 18 insertion devices(IDs) have been installed. The IDs cause closed-orbit distortions, tune drift, and coupling distortions in the SSRF storage ring, all of which are significant issues that require solutions. In this study, an ID orbit feedforward compensation system based on a response matrix using corrector coils was developed, and it was applied to all commissioned IDs in the SSRF storage ring. After correction, the maximum ID-induced horizontal and vertical orbit distortions were less than 5.0 and 3.5 μm, respectively. Some interesting phenomena observed during the measurement process were explained. Additionally, optical and coupling feedforward systems were developed using quadrupole and skew quadrupole magnets installed on the front and back of elliptically polarizing undulators(EPUs). Moreover, over nearly four months of operation, the developed strategy delivered a satisfactory performance in the SSRF storage ring.

The rice stem borer,Chilo suppressalis,has developed a high level of resistance to many of the compounds currently used for control.There is therefore an urgent need to develop novel control methods for C.suppressalis.Insect chitin synthases(CHS)have attracted interest as a potential target for insect pest management.However,to date,CHS have not been characterized in C.suppressalis.Two CHS genes(CsCHSI and CsCHS2)were identified and cloned from C.suppressalis.Two transcript variants were identified for CsCHS1,CsCHSla and CsCHS1b.Spatiotemporal expression profiling showed that both transcripts of CsCHS1 are most highly expressed on the last day of each larval instar stage and show the highest expression levels in the integument.In contrast,CsCHS2 is predominantly expressed during the larval feeding stages and shows the highest expression levels in the midgut.Knockdown of CsCHSI by RNA interference significantly inhibited the molting and pupation of C.suppressalis,and knockdown of CsCHS2 significantly affected growth during the larval stage,but had no significant effect on the pupation.Moreover,knockout of CsCHS1 by CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing severely lowered the hatching rate,larval survivorship,pupation rate,and eclosion rate,but only larval survivorship at the GO generation was lowered after the knockout of CsCHS2.These results demonstrate that CsCHS1 and CsCHS2 play vital roles in the growth and development of C.suppressalis,and so have potential as insecticidal targets for the control of this highly damaging pest.

Magnesium hydride(MgH2) is one of the most promising hydrogen storage materials for practical application due to its favorable reversibility, low cost and environmental benign;however, it suffers from high dehydrogenation temperature and slow sorption kinetics.Exploring proper catalysts with high and sustainable activity is extremely desired for substantially improving the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2. In this work, a composite catalyst with high-loading of ultrafine Ni nanoparticles(NPs) uniformly dispersed on porous hollow carbon nanospheres is developed, which shows superior catalytic activity towards the de-/hydrogenation of MgH2. With an addition of 5wt% of the composite, which contains 90 wt% Ni NPs, the onset and peak dehydrogenation temperatures of MgH2are lowered to 190 and 242 ℃, respectively. 6.2 wt% H2is rapidly released within 30 min at 250 ℃. The amount of H2that the dehydrogenation product can absorb at a low temperature of 150 ℃ in only 250 s is very close to the initial dehydrogenation value. A dehydrogenation capacity of 6.4wt% remains after 50 cycles at a moderate cyclic regime, corresponding to a capacity retention of 94.1%. The Ni NPs are highly active,reacting with MgH2and forming nanosized Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4. They act as catalysts during hydrogen sorption cycling, and maintain a high dispersibility with the help of the dispersive role of the carbon substrate, leading to sustainably catalytic activity. The present work provides new insight into designing stable and highly active catalysts for promoting the(de)hydrogenation kinetics of MgH2.

The micromechanical behavior of a recently developed TiNb/NiTi composite during a pre-straining process was investigated to broaden the understanding of deformation mechanisms of the martensitic-transforming composites.It was found that during loading,besides inherent elastic elongation,the TiNb/NiTi composite also experienced two different categories of stress-induced martensitic transformations(SIMTs,including B2→B19’andβ→α")and slight plastic deformation.Upon the following unloading,this composite recovered elastically,and underwent simultaneously a fully reversibleα"→βSIMT as well as a partially reversible B19’→B2 SIMT.It was the incomplete B19’→B2 SIMT and the permanent plastic deformation that led to the~4.6%macroscopic residual strain after unloading.In the entire loading-unloading procedure,the growth and shrinkage of(001)compound twins in B19’martensite also contributed to the large nearlinear-elastic deformation of the present composite.

Metal halide perovskite solar cells(PSCs) have seen an extremely rapid rise in power conversion efficiencies in the past few years. However, the commercialization of this class of emerging materials still faces serious challenges, one of which is the instability against external stimuli such as moisture, heat and irradiation.Much focus has deservedly been placed on understanding the different origins of intrinsic instability and thereby enhancing their stability. Among these, tensile strain in perovskite films is an important source of instability that cannot be overcome using conventionally extrinsic stabilization approaches such as encapsulation. Here we review recent progress in the understanding of the origin of strain in perovskites as well as its corresponding characterization methods, and their impacts on the physical properties of perovskites and the performance of PSCs including efficiency and stability. We then summarize the latest advances in strain-regulation strategies that improve the intrinsic stability of perovskites and photovoltaic devices. Finally, we provide a perspective on how to make further progress in stable and high-efficiency PSCs via strain engineering.

Agomelatine is a selective agonist of melatonin receptor 1A/melatonin receptor 1B(MT/MT)and antagonist of 5-hydroxytryptamine 2C receptors.It is used clinically to treat major depressive episodes in adults.The pro-chronobiological activity of agomelatine reconstructs sleep-wake rhythms and normalizes circadian disturbances via its agonistic effect of melatonin receptor 1A/melatonin receptor 1B,which work simultaneously to counteract depression and anxiety disorder.Moreover,by antagonizing neocortical postsynaptic 5-hydroxytryptamine 2C receptors,agomelatine enhances the release of dopamine and noradrenaline in the prefrontal cortex,increases the activity of dopamine and noradrenaline,and thereby reduces depression and anxiety disorder.The combination of these two effects means that agomelatine exhibits a unique pharmacological role in the treatment of depression,anxiety,and disturbance of the circadian rhythm.Emotion and sleep are closely related to memory and cognitive function.Memory disorder is defined as any forms of memory abnormality,which is typically evident in a broad range of neurodegenerative diseases,including Alzheimer’s disease.Memory impairment and cognitive impairment are common symptoms of neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases.Therefore,whether agomelatine can improve memory and cognitive behaviors if used for alleviating depression and circadian-rhythm sleep disorders has become a research“hotspot”.This review presents the latest findings on the effects of agomelatine in the treatment of psychologic and circadian-rhythm sleep disorders in clinical trials and animal experiments.Our review evaluates recent studies on treatment of memory impairment and cognitive impairment in neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases.

Diversity of culturable heterotrophic bacteria from the Mariana Trench and their ability to degrade macromolecules

The Mariana Trench is the deepest location on earth and harbors unique microbial communities as evidenced by 16S rRNA gene amplicon and metagenomic sequencing.Obtaining culturable microorganisms from the Mariana Trench will contribute to a further understanding of hadal biogeochemical processes and act as a unique microbial reservoir with potential applications.Here,825 bacterial strains,identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing,were isolated from 12 water depths(0-10,400 m)of the Mariana Trench with 2216E and R2A media at 4℃ or 28℃ on four cruises during 2015-2017.These bacteria belong to four phyla,nine classes,27 orders,45 families and 108 genera.Alphaproteobacteria,Gammaproteobacteria,Actinobacteria_c,Bacilli and Flavobacteriia were the most abundant classes,accounting for 37.9%,33.0%,11.8%,8.6%and 8.0%of the total bacterial isolates,respectively.2216E and R2A media were found to have a better selectivity to Bacilli and Flavobacteriia,respectively.Fifty strains were potential novel bacterial species with a 16S rRNA gene similarity<98.65%,and a higher percentage of novel strains were obtained from R2A than 2216E medium.Additionally,301(150 species)out of 354 strains(178 species)selected from each depth could degrade at least one of the ten kinds of macromolecules tested.These results indicate that there is a high diversity of culturable bacteria in the Mariana Trench and they can produce a variety of extracellular enzymes.Our study provides a valuable resource of microorganisms for investigating their biogeochemical roles in the Mariana Trench and for industrial applications.
