Scavenger receptor BI: A multi-purpose player in cholesterol and steroid metabolism

Scavenger receptor class B type Ⅰ (SR-BI) is an important member of the scavenger receptor family of integral membrane glycoproteins. this review highlights studies in SR-BI knockout mice, which concern the role of SR-BI in cholesterol and steroid metabolism. SR-BI in hepatocytes is the sole molecule involved in selective uptake of cholesteryl esters from high-density lipoprotein (HDL). SR-BI plays a physiological role in binding and uptake of native apolipoprotein B (apoB)-containing lipoproteins by hepatocytes, which identif ies SR-BI as a multipurpose player in lipid uptake from the blood circulation into hepatocytes in mice. In adrenocortical cells, SR-BI mediates the selective uptake of HDL-cholesteryl esters, which is eff iciently coupled to the synthesis of glucocorticoids (i.e. corticosterone). SR-BI knockout mice suffer from adrenal glucocorticoid insuff iciency, which suggests that functional SR-BI protein is necessary for optimal adrenal steroidogenesis in mice. SR-BI in macrophages plays a dual role in cholesterol metabolism as it is able to take up cholesterol associated with HDL and apoBcontaining lipoproteins and can possibly facilitate cholesterol efflux to HDL. Absence of SR-BI is associated with thrombocytopenia and altered thrombosis susceptibility, which suggests a novel role for SR-BI in regulating platelet number and function in mice. transgenic expression of cholesteryl ester transfer protein in humanized SR-BI knockout mice normalizes hepatic delivery of HDL-cholesteryl esters. However, other pathologies associated with SR-BI def iciency, i.e. increased atherosclerosis susceptibility, adrenal glucocorticoid insuffi ciency, and impaired platelet function are not normalized, which suggests an important role for SR-BI in cholesterol and steroid metabolism in man. Background:Methodological applications of the high sensitivity genus-specific Schistosoma CAA strip test,allowing detection of single worm active infections(ultimate sensitivity),are discussed for efficient utilization in sample pooling *** relevant cost reduction,pooling of samples rather than individual testing can provide valuable data for large scale mapping,surveillance,and ***:the laboratory-based CAA strip test utilizes luminescent quantitative up-converting phosphor(UCP)reporter particles and a rapid user-friendly lateral flow(LF)assay *** test includes a sample preparation step that permits virtually unlimited sample concentration with urine,reaching ultimate sensitivity(single worm detection)at 100%*** facilitates testing large urine pools from many individuals with minimal loss of sensitivity and *** test determines the average CAA level of the individuals in the pool thus indicating overall worm burden and *** requiring test results at the individual level,smaller pools need to be analysed with the pool-size based on expected prevalence or when unknown,on the average CAA level of a larger group;CAA negative pools do not require individual test results and thus reduce the number of ***:Straightforward pooling strategies indicate that at sub-population level the CAA strip test is an efficient assay for general mapping,identification of hotspots,determination of stratified infection levels,and accurate monitoring of mass drug administrations(MDA).At the individual level,the number of tests can be reduced *** low endemic settings as the pool size can be increased as opposed to prevalence ***:At the sub-population level,average CAA concentrations determined in urine pools can be an appropriate measure indicating worm *** strategies allowing this type of large scale testing are feasible with the various CAA strip test formats and do not affect sens

turning Research into Action: Using Factor Analysis to Enhance Program Evaluation

Purpose: Sexual activity among adolescents in the United States remains high. Nearly 46% of students grades 9-12 have engaged in sexual intercourse. One of the more recent statistical tools employed in evaluation efforts includes factor analysis. the objective of this study was to investigate the underlying dimensions of a survey instrument that assesses a youth character development program, which focuses on avoiding high-risk behaviors. Method: the 76-item survey instrument was administered to adolescents (age 12-18). During the 2009-2010 school year, 652 participants in the intervention group and 1110 participants in the comparison group completed the pre-, post-, and 6-month follow-up survey. Results: Using Ajzen’s theory of planned behavior groupings, 27 survey items were selected. through iterative principal axis factoring, four factors were extracted and rotated. A visual scree plot was generated to determine the number of acceptable factors. the extracted factors accounted for 52.53% of the total variance. Factors were subjected to Equimax rotation with Kaiser normalization and converged after six iterations. Variables with patterned weights less than 0.44 were excluded. A reliability analysis demonstrated internal consistency. Conclusions: Identified factors included: 1) teenagers’ attitudes toward sexual health behaviors;2) teenagers’ perceptions of the consequences of sexual health behaviors;3) Parental or guardian expectations;and 4) teenagers’ relationships with parents or guardians. this study’s results indicated that all factors can be described within Ajzen’s theoretical framework consistent with previous research findings. Results may be used to enhance delivery of the intervention.

借助虚拟水的概念，分析以粮食为载体的虚拟水国际、区际流量关系，以勾勒我国虚拟水贸易的基本格局。通过对未来我国在不同粮食发展战略下的粮食供需情况，确定我国粮食进口基本规模，对未来我国虚拟水贸易格局进行展望。分析结果表明，1999年我国北方通过粮食贸易向南方地区输出的虚拟水量达到184亿m^3。我国北方地区以有限的水资源在支持其他区域发展、确保国家粮食安全方面发挥了不可替代的作用。未来30年中国将面临新增粮食需求1．4亿～2．0亿t的巨大压力，在保持较高自给水平的前提下，我国虚拟水贸易的格局不会发生重大变化。外流域调水工程是保障国家粮食安全，维护社会稳定，促进可持续发展和造福中国人民的重大举措。虚拟水战略可作为跨流域调水的补充，在保障缺水地区水安全方面发挥重要作用。

Hybridization presents a unique challenge for conservation biologists and managers. While hybridization is an important evolutionary process, hybridization is also a threat formany native species. the endangered species recovery effort for the red wolf Canis rufus is a classic system for understanding and addressing the challenges of hybridization. From 1987-1993, 63 red wolves were released from captivity in eastern North Carolina, USA, to establish a free-ranging, non-essential experimental population. By 1999, managers recognized hybridization with invasive coyotes Canis latrans was the single greatest threat to successful recovery, and an adaptive management plan was adopted with innovative approaches for managing the threat of hybridization. Here we review the application and results of the adaptive management efforts from 1993 to 2013 by comparing: (1) the numbers of wolves, coyotes, and hybrids captured, (2) the numbers of territorial social groups with presumed breeding capabilities, (3) the number of red wolf and hybrid litters documented each year and (4) the degree of coyote introgression into the wild red wolf gene pool. We documented substantial increases in the number of known red wolves and red wolf social groups from 1987-2004 followed by a plateau and slight decline by *** number of red wolf litters exceeded hybrid litters each year and the proportion of hybrid litters per year averaged 21%. the genetic composition of the wild red wolf population is estimated to include te ancestry from recent introgression since reintroduction. We conclude that the adaptive management plan was effective at reducing the introgression of coyote genes into the red wolf population, but population recovery of red wolves will require continuation of the current management plan, or alternative approaches, for the foreseeable future. 阿尔茨海默病(Alzheimer's disease,AD)和帕金森病(Parkinson's disease,PD)是最常见的神经退行性疾病,AD是老年性痴呆最常见的形式之一,临床特征为进行性的认知和记忆功能减退;PD是最常见的运动障碍疾病,主要临床症状为静止性震颤、肌强直、运动迟缓以及姿势步态异常。2型糖尿病(type 2 diabetes mllitus,t2DM)为复杂性代谢性疾病,以胰岛素抵抗和胰岛β细胞功能损害为特点。通常认为这三者是独立的疾病,然而最近的流行病学调查显示AD、PD与t2DM之间存在密切的联系;基础研究提示三者之间可能存在共同的病理生理机制,涉及淀粉样蛋白生成机制、胰岛素抵抗以及线粒体功能障碍等方面,最终分别导致大脑神经元损失、黑质致密部多巴胺能神经元死亡和胰岛β细胞功能障碍。本文就AD、PD与t2DM之间的联系及相关治疗进展进行综述。

trong>Background: trong>Parasitic diseases are threat to the development of Ivorian Pig industry. Zoonotic diseases such as Echinococcosis have a significant impact on animal health and production. Little is known about Echinococcosis in Cô te d’Ivoire. trong>Aim:trong> For these reasons, a cross section study was conducted at SIVAC in Yopougon, on pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus), in order to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of Echinococcosis. trong>Method:trong> Paraclinical examinations of pig organs (kidneys, lungs, and liver) were conducted from 5th September to 30th December 2019 in order to report infection with this parasite. trong>Results:trong> Out of the 2425 slaughtered pigs, 63 of them were Echi-nococcosis positive, resulting in overall infection prevalence of 2.6% (95% CI: 1.9% - 3.22%). the kidneys (2.35%) were most infected, followed by lungs (0.21%), and liver (0.04%). trong>Recommendations: trong>A more in-depth study on the molecular epidemiology of Echinococcosis in the different regions of Cô te d’Ivoire is underway. Also, capacity building of community livestock actors (Veterinarians, health inspectors, breeders and butchers) and sensitization of the population on this disease is necessary in order to improve its diagnosis at the abattoir level and to set up strategies to combat it.
