Background: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established treatment for patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease (PD). Reports show continued patient satisfaction after surgery despite not maintaining clinical improvement as measured by evolution scales. Objectives: The present study sought to explore expectations and level of satisfaction in patients after DBS surgery with a semi-structured questionnaire and subsequent correlation with functional scales, Quality of Life (QoL), and motor and non-motor symptoms. Methods: We performed descriptive statistics to represent demographic data, Wilcoxon rank tests to determine significant differences, and Spearman correlation between the applied scales. Results: We evaluated 20 patients with a history of DBS surgery. 45% were female, with a mean age of 55.7 ± 14.15 years, a mean disease duration of 13.42 ± 8.3 years, and a mean time after surgery of 3.18 ± 1.86 years. Patients reported surgery meeting expectations in 85.5% and continued satisfaction in 92%. These two variables showed a significant correlation. Conclusions: This sample of patients remained satisfied after DBS surgery, although we found no differences in motor and non-motor clinimetric scales. Further studies are needed to confirm the importance of assessing quality of life in patients with DBS.

Lack of Association between Impulse Control Disorders and REM Sleep Behavior Disorder in Patients with Parkinson’s Disease

Purpose: Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) and impulse control disorders (ICDs) are common in subjects with Parkinson’s disease. The association between these two conditions has been contradictory. The aim of this study is to analyze the association between these two non-motor symptoms. Methods: Consecutive subjects with Parkinson’s disease attending the Movement Disorders Outpatient Clinic were included. The presence of ICDs was assessed using the Questionnaire for Impulse Control Disorders Rating Scale. RBD was diagnosed by an overnight, single night polysomnography. Results: Fifty-five consecutive subjects with Parkinson’s disease were included. The prevalence of ICDs and related behaviors was 23.6% (ICD in 14.5% and related behaviors in 9.1%). RBD was diagnosed in 47.2% of the patients. no differences were found in the frequency of ICDs and related behaviors when comparing subjects with and without RBD (23% versus 24.1%, p = 0.926, respectively). Conclusion: no association between the presence of RBD and the frequency of ICDs in subjects with Parkinson’s disease was found.

Animal individuality is challenging to explain because individual differences are regulated by multiple selective forces that lead to unique combinations of *** instance,the study of personality,a core aspect of individuality,may benefit from integrating other factors underlying individual differences,such as lateralized cerebral ***,the approach-withdrawal hypothesis(the left hemisphere controls approach behavior,the right hemisphere controls withdrawal behavior),may account for differences in boldness or exploration between left and right hemispheric dominant *** analyze the relationships between personality and laterality we tested 80 male piglets with established laterality patterns for 2 motor functions(tail curling direction and the side of the snout used for manipulation)and a combined classification integrating both motor functions using cluster *** analyzed basal salivary testosterone and cortisol along with their behavior in standardized tests as pre-established indicators of different personality traits(Boldness,Exploration,Activity,Sociability,and Coping).We found that the direction of the single motor biases showed significant associations with few personality ***,the combined laterality classification showed more,and more robust,significant associations with different personality traits compared with the single motor *** results supported the approachwithdrawal hypothesis because right-biased pigs were bolder and more explorative in a context of ***,right-biased pigs were more sociable than left-biased ***,the present study indicates that personality is indeed related to lateralized cerebral processing and provides insight into the multifactorial nature of individuality.

Effect of hepatic artery embolization on liver hypertrophy response in a rabbit liver VX2tumor model

Clinical Evaluation of Fluido Compact<sup>®</sup>: A new Intravenous Fluid Warmer

Unintended peri-operative hypothermia is very common in surgical patients and is associated with adverse outcomes. Perioperative use of forced-air and intravenous fluid warmers is recommended for hypothermia prevention. This study evaluated the ease of use of Fluido? Compact, a new fluid warming device, and its ability to help as part of the intraoperative patient temperature management. It was used in 36 patients undergoing scheduled surgery at risk of hypothermia under regional, general or combined anesthesia, of more than one hour duration and with a predicted intravenous fluid administration of at least 1000 ml. The fluid warmer is very easy to set up. The disposable cassette has a very low (3 ml) priming volume and it is easy to handle and to place inside the warming module. Once connected to the main power outlet, it is ready to deliver fluid at target temperature in just a few seconds. Control panel is intuitive, and the one button operation system makes it safe and convenient. The combination of peri-operative patient surface warming with Mistral?-Air forced-air warming system and intravenous fluid warming with Fluido? Compact, that allowed the administration of IV perfusions at body temperature at the rate needed thus avoiding heat loss, helps to maintain intraoperative core temperature between 36.4°C and 36.8°C. A group of patients undergo a variety of surgical procedures with neuraxial, general or combined epidural-general anesthesia.
