Heterogeneous occurrence of evergreen broad-leaved forests in East Asia:Evidence from plant fossils

Evergreen broad-leaved forests(EBLFs) are widely distributed in East Asia and play a vital role in ecosystem stability. The occurrence of these forests in East Asia has been a subject of debate across various disciplines. In this study, we explored the occurrence of East Asian EBLFs from a paleobotanical perspective. By collecting plant fossils from four regions in East Asia, we have established the evolutionary history of EBLFs. Through floral similarity analysis and paleoclimatic reconstruction, we have revealed a diverse spatio-temporal pattern for the occurrence of EBLFs in East Asia. The earliest occurrence of EBLFs in southern China can be traced back to the middle Eocene, followed by southwestern China during the late Eocene-early Oligocene. Subsequently, EBLFs emerged in Japan during the early Oligocene and eventually appeared in central-eastern China around the Miocene. Paleoclimate simulation results suggest that the precipitation of wettest quarter(PWet Q, mm) exceeding 600 mm is crucial for the occurrence of EBLFs. Furthermore, the heterogeneous occurrence of EBLFs in East Asia is closely associated with the evolution of the Asian Monsoon. This study provides new insights into the occurrence of EBLFs in East Asia.

Efficient and eco-friendly carbon dioxide capture with metal phosphate catalysts in monoethanolamine solutions

Catalytic carbon dioxide(CO_(2))desorption has emerged as a promising approach to enhance the efficiency of CO_(2)capture while minimizing energy demands,crucial for advancing chemical absorption *** study investigates the catalytic potential of three metal phosphates(aluminium phosphate(AlPO4),cobaltous phosphate(Co_(3)(PO_(4))_(2)),and zinc phosphate(Zn_(3)(PO_(4))_(2)))in improving the MEA(monoethanolamine)-based CO_(2)absorption-desorption *** the catalysts tested,AlPO_(4)demonstrated superior performance,enhancing CO_(2)absorption capacity by 4.2%to 9.3%and desorption capacity by 12.3%to 22.7%across five ***,AlPO_(4)increased the CO_(2)desorption rate by over 104.4%at a desorption temperature of 81.3℃,simultaneously reducing the required sensible heat by 12.3%to 22.7%,compared to processes without *** improved efficiency is attributed to AlPO_(4)'s ability to effectively transfer hydrogen protons from protonated MEA to carbamate,thereby facilitating the decomposition of carbamate and regenerating CO_(2).This research introduces a viable,cost-effective,and eco-friendly solid acid catalyst strategy for CO_(2)desorption,contributing to the development of more energy-efficient CO_(2)capture technologies.

Late Eocene sclerophyllous oak from Markam Basin, Tibet, and its biogeographic implications

Sclerophyllous evergreen broad-leaved forests,mainly made up of sclerophyllous oak,Quercus section Heterobalanus(Øerst.)Menitsky,Fagaceae,represent the most typical forest type in the Hengduan *** distribution pattern is closely related to the growth and formation of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau(QTP).The oldest fossil record of Quercus *** so far discovered is from the middle Miocene of the Gazhacun Formation in Namling County,southern ***,our recent discovery of leaf fossils from the upper Eocene of Lawula Formation in Markam Basin,southeastern Tibet,illustrates that their origin is nearly 20 Myr older than previously *** integrating the results from geometric morphometrics,geographical range expansion,and ecological niche shifts of this section in what is now the QTP and the Hengduan Mountains,we infer that the leaves of Quercus *** were already adapted to cool and dry conditions in some local regions no later than in the late ***,with the growth of the QTP and late Cenozoic global cooling,the expansion of cooler and drier habitats benefited the spread and development of this section and their leaves exhibited morphological stasis through stabilizing *** on published fossil records and recent discoveries,we argue that Quercus *** appeared in the subtropical evergreen and deciduous broad-leaved mixed forests of the southeastern margin of what is now the QTP no later than in the late *** taxa spread westwards along the Gangdese Mountains and later the Himalaya,and others spread eastwards and southeastwards,gradually becoming a dominant group of species in the Hengduan *** dispersal route is contrary to the previous“northwards hypothesis”of this section,and further supports the hypothesis of an East Asian origin for Quercus section Ilex Loudon.

基于酚酸良好的还原性和无污染性建立酚酸基纳米金传感体系,以实现亚硝酸盐和亚硫酸盐的灵敏检测。采用不同酚酸还原氯金酸制备纳米金(Gold nanoparticles,AuNPs),通过紫外光谱和交流阻抗法获得还原效果最佳的酚酸为没食子酸(Gallic acid,GA)。利用电沉积法制备GA@AuNPs@Au电极,并由线性扫描伏安法(Linear scanning voltammetry,LSV)表征亚硝酸盐和亚硫酸盐的电化学行为。优化体系条件为:GA浓度1 mmol/L、孵育温度70℃、反应时间60 min、pH6.0磷酸盐缓冲溶液浓度0.15 mol/L。亚硝酸盐和亚硫酸盐浓度在0.001~7 mmol/L范围内与氧化峰电流分别呈良好的线性关系(R2>0.994),检出限分别为0.20μmol/L和0.24μmol/L(S/N=3)。该修饰电极的重现性和稳定性良好,可用于实际样品中亚硝酸盐和亚硫酸盐的同时测定。

Biosynthesis of poly-3-hydroxybutyrate with a high molecular weight by methanotroph from methane and methanol

Poly-3-hydroxybutyrate （PHB） can be produced by various species of bacteria. Among the possible carbon sources, both methane and methanol could be a suitable substrate for the production of PHB. Methane is cheap and plentiful not only as natural gas, but also as biogas. Methanol can also maintain methanotrophic activity in some conditions. The methanotrophic strain Methylosinus trichosporium IMV3011 can accumulate PHB with methane and methanol in a brief nonsterile process. Liquid methanol （0.1%） was added to improve the oxidization of methane. The studies were carried out using shake flasks. Cultivation was performed in two stages： a continuous growth phase and a PHB accumulation phase under the conditions short of essential nutrients （ammonium, nitrate, phosphorus, copper, iron （Ⅲ）, magnesium or ethylenediamine tetraacetate （EDTA）） in batch culture. It was found that the most suitable growth time for the cell is 144 h. Then an optimized culture condition for second stage was determined, in which the PHB concentration could be much increased to 0.6 g/L. In order to increase PHB content, citric acid was added as an inhibitor of tricarboxylic acid cycle （TCA）. It was found that citric acid is favorable for the PHB accumulation, and the PHB yield was increased to 40% （w/w） from the initial yield of 12% （w/w） after nutrient deficiency cultivation. The PHB produced is of very high quality with molecular weight up to 1.5 × 10^6Da.

The behavioral and antioxidant response of the bivalve Gomphina veneriformis to sediment burial effect

A laboratory-based microcosm experiment was carried out to examine both the behavioral and antioxidant response of the clam Gomphina veneriformis under the conditions of 3 types of burial material(sand,silt,silt-sand mixture)with 3 burial depths(5 cm,15 cm,30 cm).The concentration of dissolved oxygen decreased significantly after 3 d of burial in all experimental *** silt and sand-silt mixture groups,the interstitial water quality became worsened with lower pH,and higher NH4^(+)-N concentration,where clam mortality occurred ***,clam samples in all sand groups and 5 cm,15 cm sand-silt mixture groups survived well for 8 *** fewer individuals left in the bottom sand in the 15 cm,30 cm silt groups and 30 cm sand-silt mixture groups than in the 5 cm ***,it suggests that adding silt and increasing burial depth could stimulate the vertical movement of organisms and cause lethal *** was found that the burial depth was the key factor that influenced the activities of antioxidant enzymes,such as superoxide dismutase(SOD)and catalase(CAT).The SOD and CAT activities in the gills and hepatopancreases of organisms both showed significant upregulation in 30 cm burial depth after buried for 8 *** enzyme activities were found in gills than in hepatopancreases,which indicated that the gills of the bivalve *** were more susceptible to burial effects than ***,this study shows that sediment burial could cause effects on the biological behavior and antioxidant enzyme activities.
