Changes in the Food Web Linked to Restoration Effort Intensity and Watershed Conditions

Many tidal wetland restoration projects have focused on changes in vegetation or avian communities to determine whether restoration efforts have been successful. However, a functioning restored ecosystem relies on complex interactions among organisms on every level of the food web. In 2008, more than 223 hectares (ha) of former dairy ranch were restored to tidal wetland in Tomales Bay, California. To evaluate changes, we monitored zooplankton, benthic invertebrate, and fish communities before and after restoration in the Project Area and several natural marshes. Zooplankton and benthic invertebrate communities differed from natural marshes prior to restoration, but began to converge with natural marshes after restoration in terms of species composition, richness, and diversity. Fish communities in the Project Area remained distinct from those of natural marshes after restoration, although abundance of non-native species decreased. In past studies, fish communities have changed more quickly than invertebrate ones. The divergent evolutionary path taken by this system may stem from differences in restoration approach. This project did not involve extensive excavation or fill with dredge spoil material, and this minimalistic approach may promote more rapid colonization by invertebrates, especially if source populations exist nearby. While convergence with natural marshes was an objective, rapid colonization may not be beneficial in this instance as natural marshes have turned out to be dominated by non-native, opportunistic invertebrate species. Ultimately, success of restoration projects may be determined by factors extrinsic to the project itself such as climatic variability and prevalence of invasive species within watersheds.

Is the Photosuturing Agent, Rose Bengal, a Mutagen?

Rose Bengal (RB) is a potential photosuturing agent that may improve standard dermatologic surgical closure techniques. However, RB produces reactive oxygen species with photoactivation and its photomutagenic potential must be considered in clinical application. We investigated cytotoxicity, mutagenicity, and singlet oxygen (SO) production of RB on epithelial Chinese hamster ovary cell line. Cells were exposed to RB concentrations: 0.1%, 0.01%, 0.001%, 0.0001%, 0.00001%;irradiated for 400 s using a high-intensity visible wavelength lamp or maintained in the dark. Cell viability was assessed by XTT assay, mutagenicity by HPRT gene mutation assay, and SO production by Sensor Green reagent. RB > 0.001% was significantly cytotoxic. Viabilities were uninfluenced by ≤0.0001% RB controls, or 30-min incubation. 49% of irradiated cells died after 24-h in 0.0001% RB. At ≥0.001% RB, >90% of cells died. Irradiating 0.00001% - 0.001% RB increased SO;levels dropped significantly between 0.01% - 0.1%. Controls exhibited negligible SO production. HPRT suggested that RB was not mutagenic (0.0001%, 0.00001%);SO induction increased between 0.00001% - 0.001%, with reduced production at higher concentrations. Pilot studies suggested irradiated 0.0001% RB is mutagenic in vitro;current data suggest RB is not photomutagenic. The contribution of RB’s cytotoxicity on observed clinical improvement of scars and mutagenic potential remains unclear, necessitating further study.

Impact of Social Determinants of Health on the Choice and Use of Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives

Modern women have increased options for birth control with the development of Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARCs). These methods are reliable, easy to use, and require less daily maintenance while providing contraception for an extended period of time. However, despite the surge of LARCs as contraceptive options, the prevalence of unintended pregnancies is still alarmingly high in the United States. As LARCs are the most effective reversible method of birth control at preventing pregnancy, and therefore the potential social, financial, and medical complications associated, we examined whether social determinants of health play a role in LARC usage. While parity and marriage do not seem to affect LARC utilization, increased research is needed to determine the effects of race. Age can affect the type of LARC implemented, as younger women prefer implants to intrauterine devices (IUDs). Insurance coverage was an apparent influencer of LARC usage, as low out-of-pocket costs translate to increased utilization. This is linked to socioeconomic status (SES), as lower SES is associated with decreased access to healthcare in general. Increased research is needed in order to draw conclusions about the effects of education, intimate partner violence, geographic location, and other SDH on LARC usage.

背景:内镜超声引导下细针穿刺活检(EUS-FNB)的应用日渐增多以提高实质病变的细胞学检出率,但其相较于目前的细针穿刺抽吸(FNA)的优越性并未获明确证实。本研究旨在比较在EUS引导下采用新型Franseen-tip穿刺针的FNB与传统FNA的诊断准确性及操作相关指标。方法:入组接受EUS-FNB检查的连续实质病变患者,前瞻性记录其操作相关指标,包括患者人口统计资料、穿刺次数、诊断样本的充分性、不良反应和恢复时间。研究组采用Acquire针抽取样本。同时纳入行EUSFNA检查的实质病变患者作为对照组,对照组采用Expect针抽取样本。结果:180例行EUS-FNB和183例行EUS-FNA进行实质病变样本采集的患者纳入研究。FNB组较FNA组平均操作时间显著缩短(37.4 min vs 44.9 min,P<0.001),平均穿刺次数明显减少(2.9次vs 3.8次,P<0.001),细胞学检出率明显提高(98.3%vs 90.2%,P=0.003)。两组不良事件发生率的差异无统计学意义(1.1%vs 0.5%,P=0.564)。结论:EUS-FNB用于实质病变的病理活检是安全可行的,可减少穿刺次数,缩短操作时间,提高病变检出率。FNB或可替代FNA作为所有实质病变的首选标本获取方法。
